Need Advice: Installed a muffler and got Limp Mode

Hi everybody,
Limp Mode finally got me. That'll teach me to talk smack about the RT's. :roflblack:
But seriously--I ride an '09 RS and have never had a single error code. Within 6 days of installing a 2 Brothers Slip-On exhaust (Vale M-2), Limp mode hit me and now I can't go over 3,500 RPMs. I remembered from the RT folks to turn it off, walk 30 feet away, and try again--but that hasn't worked. I let it sit all weekend with the key out and far away, but it still has the same issue. Does anyone have any advice? I'm getting the DPS, ABS failure, and VSS failure codes with the check engine light and the constant "Limp Home Mode" scrolling across. Major bummer...especially considering my Spyder is my primary form of transportation.

Thanks in advance for any useful advice.

Best,
--Andy

Hey Andy,

I'm sorry about problem. I certainly don't think it has anything to do with the exhaust. That's the same one I have.

I think Lamont has a point about the battery. Good luck and let us know turns out.

Maybe the O2 sensor got bumped during the installation?

It's just a slip-on. Pulled the old one off & put the new one on. Is there an O2 sensor underneath? Seems weird that it would run like a champ for 6 days and then all of a sudden I hit Limp Mode. As a matter of fact--it went Limp Mode while I was riding home. I went to throttle up and *gurgle gurgle gurgel*...you know the deal. I was like "what the heck?" because I had never experienced Limp Mode.

I'll try everything you guys are suggesting to be sure. And thanks for the condolences Bill.

Well I checked all the fuses in the frunk and under the seat. No issues. I checked the battery. Everything is tight. I went ahead and stripped it down and put in a new K&N high performance air filter. We'll see if that does anything. Next step is to put her back together and put on the old muffler and see if that helps. I'll keep ya posted.

I'm really disappointed that no one suggested that he get one of those new
Viagara mufflers. Would straighten the problem out post haste:yes::yes::yes:

I'll throw in my 2 cents. The battery is probably low. It doesn't take much power to bring up the dash gauges but if you get the holy trinity of faults at the same time it's pretty commonly caused by low voltage. Check the battery voltage. If you can't, plug it into a charger and charge it up good, then reset it by disconnecting for 20-30 minutes (5 is probably enough but who knows?) and see if the faults go away and it starts.

limp mode

i have herd mention several things to try when i was experiencing the same issues but no muffler exchange mine was caused by brake lights issue i changed to led lights in the brake light sockets and it was throwing the bike to fits of limp mode ABS VSS and Brake failure all due to the lower amp usage of the bulbs

Well, I left the batter disconnected at lunch and l'll try again when I get home tonight. That will give it several hours disconnected. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I have too many LEDs connected. I'll try disconnecting some of them and see if that works. Thanks everyone for all your help. I remember I got an ABS failure once and all it took was a little DOT-3 fluid as recommended by a Spyderlover. I'm still hoping this is something simple and don't have to go pay through the nose at the dealer. They want $90 just to hook it up to the computer. I'm going through Spyder withdrawls!!

faults

maybe a long shot, but check the oil level. Had it happen to me - check engine light, O2 sensor code and other stuff popping up on the display.
Doesn't hurt to check
