Neck warmers! They came to me in a dream last night! And, they really exist!

As it has been getting colder, I have been wearing a scarf while riding into work. I knew about balaclavas. But, I was thinking more of just a tube shaped warmer - a dickie. :) So, this morning, I did a search. And, the first thing I run across is this neck cover by Frank Thomas. Then; I find a bunch more.

Here's Turtle Fur?!

Balaclava's, I'm sure are nice for keeping ears (and head) warm. I was wondering how they affect your helmet fit. So far; in the mid 40s, my ears are fine with just the helmet.

Yes, they do exist, and they are delightful. I even have a leather jacket that came with one that is fleece one side and nylon on the other, with velco to attach it to the quilted liner. I recommend the windproof variety like that one. Whitehorse Press Has several good neckwarmers and balaclavas. Their newest catalog has even more than their Web site. If I am not wearing a turtleneck, I usually grab a neck warmer in this weather...sometimes both.

I have a balaclava that has Turtle Fur attached at the neck. This is a wonderful thing. It has a duel purpose for me. It keeps my neck warm and it prevents the excess air from coming up into my helmet. I do have to crack my helmet a touch to prevent fogging but it works very well. It was a whole $13.00 at my local shop and I love it.

Yep - I got a few of them and they are warm! I don't wear them anymore though - I bought the Gerbing liner and it does the trick - right up to my neck!

I'm headed over to Cycle Gear today to see what they offer. If they have stock, a balaclava like this might be a really good option...

Ears would should stay warm, as well. Apparently, the way this is designed, your helmet won't be much tighter, either.

Yesterday morning, I got out early when it was in the very low 40s to run to the store before the Reelfoot Lake ride. It's 6 miles to the store. My ears felt it. Long Johns for my legs would not have been a bad idea either. That was the first time, that I really noticed my ears getting cold.

Not necessarily a neck warmer...

While not necessarily a "neck warmer" per se, this little gem makes winter riding much more bearable -- especially for the Spyder as the wind off the front end seems to hit the helmet on an upward vector.

Unfortunately, it will only work with a full-face helmet. If you have a modular full-face helmet you will lose the feature allowing you to fold the face and jaw protection upward.

The soft, lycra membrane fits snugly, yet comfortably, around your neck effectively sealing the gap around the bottom of your helmet. I wear this with a wool scarf under my jacket. After donning my helmet, I simply pull the scarf up around the small remaining portion of exposed skin -- voila!

As a side benefit, sealing the gap around the bottom of your helmet also greatly reduces the amount of noise.

Mark

I purchased a Turtlefur Shellaclava.

It's 41 degrees this morning. I'll let you all know what I think when I get to work. :)

This is the one I have and I love it. It doesn't make my helmet fit too much tighter, only a little and I have to loosen my chin strap a bit. It works double duty for me at the bottom. It blocks the wind from coming up in my helmet, like the windjammer option posted above and it keeps my neck warm as well. Because I don't have the wind coming in my helmet and my ears are covered, my ears and head stay a lot warmer making my whole ride experience much more comfortable. I love this thing. This along with my First Gear Thermosuit and good gloves and boots and I am ready for the winter. If I decide I need the heated gloves, Gerbing is on my Christmas list.

Hi Deb! Yes.. I like the Turtlefur balaclava! It did a great job. And, it is designed in such a way, that my helmet really didn't feel much tighter. A little; but, not bad.
