• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

My GPS is worthless

Had the 590 installed on the F3 and love it! Today I ordered their Elite camera, going to be a nice combo.

Member or Troll?

OK peterparker you started this thread and there have been 20 responses, many with questions and/or suggestions and it has been over 24 hours without a response from you. I was about to offer my suggestions then got to wondering if you were just trolling?

If you have been too busy and/or away from a computer or smartphone then fine but you start a "worthless" thread early in the evening and folks start responding within 12 minutes and you are nowhere to be found?

Your thread is worthless if you don't participate!

Charles

At the risk of asking the obvious - do you have the brightness on your GPS turned to 100%? Mine sometimes resets itself to 20% (I have no idea why).

Sorry Charles. I should really be more on top of complying to your demands. Regardless of the reason that I am just now getting to read all of these posts, I don't think it is any of your damned business how long it has taken. Who the hell are you, the response police???

To everyone else, thanks for all of the suggestions. I appreciate them and will explore the options that you all have given me.

 Perhaps you just got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning...
lighten up a bit; we've seen many Trolls try to start trouble in just this way, and Charles was right to question your motives...
Be thankful that we have members who are "on the watch".

:agree: Of late, there have been a lot of troublemaker trolls plying their game on the site. Some get profiled that should not, some get missed altogether.

Themes that incite internal arguing have been a problem lately. So, that is why your post was questioned.

I'm confused, are we fishing for trolls with Snickers bars or trolling for Snickers bars with a troll? :ro:yes:flblack:

UPDATE: I got the Glare Stomper today.
Attaching it to my GPS was pretty easy. I cut out an area for the power button, so that it'd be easier to find.
Now all I need is some sunshine and riding weather! :2thumbs:

Polarized sunglasses

Try non-polarized sunglasses and see what a difference they make reading your GPS. I have found that the polarized sunglasses are what really makes the GPS hard to see. A friend of mine that is a pilot and also an avid motorcycle rider pointed told me that pilots never used polarized sunglasses when they fly because the polarized glass makes it too difficult to read the instruments. I believe that is why some people have found that mounting the GPS to the dash make it more readable.

GARMIN 590

 I think your going to be very happy :ohyea: with the Garmin Zumo 590.

I believe it is a new model that solves the glare problem. [ QUOTE=peterparker;936498]Howdy gang,

Why have a touring model with a POS for a GPS???

I have a 2014 RT LTD that came with a Garmin Zumo 660. I like the ease of being able to take the gps off of the bike but I really hate the fact that you can't see anything on the screen in sunlight. I tried adding a Glare Stomper but that was a waste of money. I would like to get a replacement for the 660 that you can actually read in sunlight and would probably opt for a bigger screen. It looks like the mount that is on my RT is wired in so something that would fit that mount would be nice too. If the thing was not waterproof, no biggie. I will pull over and stick it in the trunk at the same time that I put my wallet in there when caught in the rain.

Anybody got suggestions?

Motorcycle GPS

You are welcome to check this waterproof motorcycle GPS, i just converted from Garmin Zumo 660 on my RT LTD to the ZG-5050.

The link is here

The conversion is very easy and since this unit have an FM transmitter it is not necessary to wire the sound.

The 5" big screen on this unit is very bright with anti glare, the units also includes Sun shade and a much modern iGo Primo software.

Where to buy?

OK, I give up, I can not find JT's mounting bracket on line or on this board. :banghead: Maybe I am looking for the wrong name or do not have the complete name. Any help would be appreciated. I have the GPS mounted on the dash of my GL1800 and love it. It is still below my line of site but a much easier to see location. I have looked at my Spyder dash and see that it would be well below my line of sight yet still much easier to see than where the GPS is on the bars. Thanks in advance!

Your GPS is fine...
If you put a 25" screen down in the middle of the handlebars; you'd STILL have sunlight and glare keep you from being able to read it. :banghead:
Get one of JT's mounting brackets, and just place it up on top of the dash...

Great product by the way and very reasonably priced.

Maybe that is why I do not have a problem with it. Ex Airline Pilot. The above is very true but it is actually the wavy colors it creates on the windshield and distorts anything outside. This is due to the many layers of the glass. Most of the over the counter (cheap) sunglasses are polarized. Some prescription glasses might have this but doubt it. Check with your Optometrist.

I made my own gps sun shade by takeing a nice block of 4 x 4 and tracing the outline of the gps on the face. I cut it out and sanded the three edges making sure not take too much off (I cut outside the trace lines so I could sand away some meat). The smoother the better for the next step and remember to radius the 2 corners.

I took a 1/8" piece of ABS plastic sheet with the pebble finish, cut to fit the width and the total length of the wood block (measured 2 sides and one top length). I placed the plastic on top of the block and centered it on place. The block was placed onto of a short wood block to ensure that the ABS did ont contact the ground when it folded.

I put this in the oven, set it to 300 degrees if I recall but it is a bit of trial and error, start lower and move up a bit at time giving 10 minutes or so between changes. While keegin an eye on it you will see the plastic start to droop a bit on the sides which signals its about ready. I reach in with smooth, clean oven mitts and press the plastic to the sides. If it resists, I give more time and few more degrees. When it folds down nicely I pull the block and plastic out and keep pressure on the sides and top as it cools a bit (cool air from a fan speeds this up).

Once out I do any final trimming by hand, then I add black felt to the inside, keeping just back from the back edge to allow for strips of velcro
I then mount narro pieces of velcro (furry side on the GPs) where the gps will allow and Bob's your Uncle!

Now you can buy sun shields but you accomplish three things with this, you can customize as you like, you have just learned a new skill that allows you to make all kinds of other parts when necessary and you have bragging rights, lol.
