My first ride, and question about the Baja Ron sway bar

Hi PamI live in Gilbert Az . Same dealers same quates. I have a fork lift and did it my self after their quates.
It all is hard to get at but the biggest problem is getting bolts throught the white blocks. I used a drift pin and clamped them in place but one was way out of wack. So I ended up rounding out one bolt and finally got the second one done. So glad I did it realy makes a difference.
Most independents do not want to work on can am spyder too much tupperware to take off.
PS I do some great rides with locals who except us like and other bike. Send me a private message will get you hooked up with them. Also want to get a spyder group together so hope you join in.
Kenn

Awesome, let me know if you get a local Spyder Owners Group together. I'm very active with the American Legion Riders and am Secretary at my post (Post 39 in Gilbert). All the riders are just fine with me being on a Spyder, and are actually glad to see me riding again after all the issues I've been having with my back.

Hi Pam,

Re: they have to call upon three extra people to hold up the front of the Spyder while the technician does the work.

Are those three guys named Rube Goldberg, Rube Goldberg & Rube Goldberg?

PS) The only thing good about that is it got a laugh out of me.

not so much in my opinion

We picked up our new Spyder RT-S Special Series yesterday at a dealership 140 miles from home. We could have hopped on the freeway to come home, but instead decided to put her to the test. We took an out of the way scenic route home, going up into the high country onto some of our favorite twistie roads. I just love the way she handles the curves, and she has plenty of get up and go. Our only concern was that wierd swaying feeling. Sara was on the back seat, and she said it felt like we were on a boat at times. I remember reading some posts about the Baja Ron sway bar, with many people saying this should be the first mod. I didn't pay much attention to those posts, but now that I have ridden the Spyder, I think I get it.

So will the sway bar eliminate that wierd "boat" sensation? If so, I will order one post haste.

Also, are they very difficult to install? I like to do my own work whenever possible.

Thanks!

Pam
I think the swaying is from you being new to the machine and constantly making very small corrections, just relax and in time you will be more comfortable and things should settle down. I would suggest giving it some time before you spend the money on new parts, you may end up fine with the way it is.

The Baja Ron sway definitely saved my life at Spyderfest '15. I was on my 2012 RT Limited, it had the upgraded sway bar and the stock re-locator from Pitbull, I also had a laser aligned by Lamont.

I was in the center lane and a car in the right lane started pulling over into my lane and there was oncoming traffic I had no place to go. Luckily the oncoming car seen what was happening and hit the side of the road that gave me that fraction of a second to swerve into the other lane my right front tire came off the ground, I got around the car and back in my lane before the next oncoming car. The factory suspension would not have held in this situation I would've been seriously injured or killed.

I now have the same Spyder you have 2015 RT-SS (red and black) and the Baja Ron sway bar should be here Saturday.

When I traded in the 2012 I removed a lot of option but I left the upgraded suspension on the Spyder for the new owners safety.

Sway bar replacement.

The only difficulty with the sway bar replacement is you need to be able to get it off the ground . . . with my 2013 RT, it needed to be 20" up to be able to remove the old bar and replace it. It is, however, worth every cent. I agree with the replacement heim links . . . the OEM links were designed with the forces the original sway bar would develop. A stiffer bar will experience heavier loads, which is what stops the excessive swaying.

I have 2013 RT and am interested in replacing the sway bar. I have the spyder on jack stands in the front and the rear tire sitting on 2 - 2"X6" X8" long boards (the spyder is amost Level) presently getting ready for an oil change, and a couple other safety farkles.
I am waiting for my sway bar to arrive also. I have the frunk off and all the left side Tupperware . I was wondering when you measured 20" clearance what part of the spyder did you measure from to get this hight. Any information and or tips on this sway bar installation will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for your help

The clearance needs to be under the sway bar channel. The bar has to slide to one side and then swing down to get it out. Need room for the bar to swing low enough to come out before it hits the floor.

Doc Humphry's spring stiffeners

I don't know why everyone is ignoring Doc Humpreys spring stiffeners. I got my RT it was dancing around while I got used to it. But i relaxed and it got sooo much better. Just like everyone writes on this forum. I put the stiffeners on and they worked well. They were easy to put on and worked well at making the ride much better without making it noticeably stiffer, just more controllable. And they are just as easy to take off. If you want to get the sway bar go ahead. I don't know if a dealer will deny a warranty claim if they see you messed with the suspension. But at a cheaper cost the stiffeners are worth a look. I don't know if Doc will take them back if they don't work for you. They are 90+ shipping, but he makes them himself. I'm certainly happy with them. Do what you want, but weigh all the options. By the way I don't know Doc personally. I read people getting testy on this forum over nonsense. These are first world issues people. Settle down.

I manage an auto repair shop. In my opinion, spring stiffeners have always been a cheap fix for someone who doesn't want to fix it right. I may be wrong in that assessment but I can't get past it. Basically they eliminate the movement of part of the coil spring causing the weight to be transferred to the other side of the spring. Don't hate, that's just how I feel about them.

Keefer thanks for your input. I'm not a service tech. That was a good point you made. I just wish BRP had set it up right to begin with. I will put some more miles on my RT then I'll reevaluate. Hey I'm not hating. It's just I see people get a lil carried away on this forum. Maybe it's in fun, but still.

Here is what eventually happens to coil springs with spacers installed. Since the part of the spring opposite the spacer is handling more stress, it eventually fatigues the coil causing it to sag.
Upgrading the sway bar is not adding anything to the suspension that isn't already there. It is simply replacing a lighter duty part with a heavier duty part.
I debated upgrading my sway bar but I'm glad I decided to do it. The rocking back and forth on uneven roads is gone. I feel way more confident riding in strong cross winds and passing semi trucks. My wife even commented that she doesn't get whipped around like before adding the sway bar.
i agree, BRP should have put a heavier bar on in the first place.

Incorrect installation

I certianlly could be wrong, but:

The spacers in the above pix are are installed incorrectly. They should be 180* ( directly opposite) from each other. I've had Docs spacers on my spider for 1000 miles or so and there is no problem.

Just sayin'

Kaos

PS:::::
And Yes, BRP certianly should have up graded the springs and anti-sway bar in the first place considering what we pay for these beasts.

Just installed

My wife and I worked on this today and I will say the hardest part was getting it up the 20+ inches. We didn't finish in enough time for a ride but we did take it down the end of the road and back. I felt different for sure. We can't wait to take it out on the open road for a good test.

I watched Doc's installation video. He shows using one, two, or three spacers. Two installed 180 degrees apart would definitely be better than one. But if you are having to buy four spacers, how does that compare to the cost of the sway bar?
For me, the looks and performance reviews convinced me to go with the sway bar.
