My 31,500 mile Spyder owner's report..

I took delivery of my Full Moon Spyder SM5 on Sept. 27, 2008. I just recently turned over 31,500 miles.
Nothing crazy maintenance has been required since ownership.
I am blessed to have a great dealer; FRS Powersports in Memphis. They have always done 'all' of my work - including oil changes.
Typically, I have changed the back tire at about 10,400 miles. At 31,100 miles, my last back tire was installed.
I have had my oil changes done at between 3,000-4,000 miles. And, only once have the brake pads required replacement. And, each time my Spyder is in the shop, I have them check everything. The air filter has only required replacement once.
My front tires have been replaced one time. That was at about 21,000 miles.
The lifters have still not needed to be adjusted. And, the spark plugs have been replaced once. And, my dealer told me that the drive belt will probably not require replacement until maybe 45,000-50,000 miles.
What else? What else? Oh! My instrument cluster glass had a leak. But, after a couple of tries, that looks to be fixed. The glass had to be replaced.
At this last service, they found the right front headlight out. So; I had them replace both (total cost of about $24). And, this had to occur right before taking it in. I check that stuff all the time.
July of 2009, I replaced both taillights after finding one out. And, as anyone will tell you that has the Spyder backrest system, it's a little nightmare replacing the taillight bulbs! Lol! Just last week, another one of the taillights had burned out, so again; I replaced both (long life 1157s). Easier the second time around; since I knew what to expect.

Also; while it was in the shop this last time, they replaced the rivets on the Hindle heat guards. Both were quite loose. They didn't even charge me for that service. But, somewhere around that time, that Hindle badge fell off. It's probably lying by a roadside..

Now; I have been told by my dealer that before long, a major (5 or 6 hour) brake system cleaning and refill will be due. And, this is going to be an expensive bill at $60 per hour. But; apparently, it is required over time.

Of course, at this last visit, they did the DPS recall. And, as I mentioned previously, I can tell no difference. My steering has always seemed fine.

Oh! There is one major irritant! About every 5-6,000 miles, an exhaust gasket blows. That's the thing that's a pain! In the summer, especially, my Spyder does backfire on deceleration, and I was told that that will cause the exhaust gaskets to live a shorter life.

But all in all; it has been nothing but a great experience! After our 8 day (1,706 miles) trip to Asheville, NC and around, and back in September; I have decided that GIVI removable bags are the next major order of business. The Nelson-Rigg soft bags do a nice job. But; being out 7 nights, nice removable GIVI's, I think, are the hot ticket!

Wow, only $60 per hour for labor. The shop I bought my Spyder from charges $90. They haven't got any of my money yet.:2thumbs:

:congrats: on your milestone of almost trouble free ryding. It sounds like you have a fine machine:clap::clap::clap:.

Nice report. If you can talk your shop into it, use the Goldwing gaskets next time...they last longer. BTW, usually it is the blown exhaust gaskets that cause decel backfire...not the other way around.

Glad to hear a report from an West Tennessee Spyderlover. I went to FRS to look into their inventory and I hardly got the time of day out of them. Ended up going somewhere else. Although I am confident that my dealer will take care of me, it's good to know that FRS have a good service department too.

I was wondering about the exhaust gaskets... thanks Scotty!

At my last dealer visit to replace the DPS, I asked about the backfiring and they found that the gaskets were shot, and told me that they would have to order them. They are also a Honda dealer so I got on Spyderlovers and showed them the post about the Goldwing gaskets... they had them in stock, said they fit perfectly, and made a note in their computer system to use the Honda gaskets for any other Spyder that needs them.

This is the best site EVER!

Great report, and a big :congrats: on having mainly trouble free miles as well. I hope this trend continues for you.

It shows a way to modify your taillight assembly to make changing bulbs less of a chore. I did this mod to mine a couple of service intervals ago and changed to Dzus (sp?) fasteners for the big black panel above the rear tire. Should make bulb replacement a piece of cake, comparatively. I also changed to the Pep Boys LED bulbs to make the need for replacement less likely. Someday I might spring for the high dollar ESI LED taillight conversion. For now there are other mods I want worse and only so much money to go around. Glad you are having a great Spyder experience.
+1 on the Honda exhaust gaskets.

:congrats: on your great spyder experience and miles you've put on!

$60 an hour is a deal! $90 up here!

Get the Honda gaskets -- they're 1/2 the price and will last WAY longer. Just search for Honda Gasket out here and you should find the part number.

The brake job can be done without their 5 hour service -- many have done it themselves.

As far as your belt goes-- if properly tensioned you should be fine for a long time-- many are above 50,000 on the original belt.

:2thumbs:Thanks for the report. I will be changing the exhaust gaskets to the Honda this winter as I have 8,000 miles and it should be a frustrating afternoon of fun!:yikes:

Thanks for the update.

Hey Greg. Thanks for sharing. I've got 22,270 on mine now but have decided to put it up for sale. Glad you're having a good time on yours. Keep on riding dude. Jerry

Thank you, Everyone! :clap:And, you're welcome! It was time to get a report out there. :D

Also; right before my warranty was up, I did purchase the B.E.S.T. warranty.
.......... but, I'm having 'no' luck getting another Can-Am Hindle Badge for my exhaust.
