• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

My 2012 RT has developed Windshield Sparkles! Anyone else? Any ideas to fix, or just replace?

I have a secret ingredient for my plastic. Picked it up when I was flying ultralights around the airport. The glider guys and some of the airplane guys used original Lemon Pledge. I used to use the high dollar stuff, but at a buck and change this stuff seems to work well for me. Got 8 years out of a poly-carbonate screen on my last bike before it began to sparkle.

The problem I find with furniture polish it has no UV protectorates. I have had the same w/s on bikes I have owned over 20 years and rode over 160K miles. And it's no secret - I use polishes intended for plastics, such as Plexus. On tour, I carry a small can. Washing bugs and dirt off, I simply use a soft, damp cloth and wipe with a towel, using only up and down strokes. Too many bugs and I spray hydrogen peroxide on 'em using a spray bottle.

Mr Ricz,
I've heard of the peroxide use, is there any precautions about using it around any materials? I once made the mistake of using Purple Power on aluminum, boy that was a mistake I couldn't take back.

Hydrogen peroxide eats proteins, and bugs are mostly that. I have never had HP harm any thing on a bike, but I am careful to keep it solely on the w/s. I have used it on the painted surfaces on cars with no negative effects.

I'm quite tall (6'-6") and I bought one of these and with the W/S all the way up I look between them and haven't had many, if any, bugs or pebbles fly thru the opening. It's much cheaper than a new W/S.

+1 on the Plexus, great product. To clean windshield, it is easy if you lay a soaped wet rag (t shirt) on the shield for 10 or 15 minutes. Bugs come off easily.
FYI Windshields on motorcycles are meant to be looked over, not through. According to National Cycle, (largest producer of aftermarket motorcycle windshields) you should be looking 1.5 to 2" over the top of your shield. I am not tall, so I have cut off every windshield that I ever had.

The stock windshield is made from MR10 which is a polycarbonate. At F4 Customs we provide a polycarbonate windshield which we bake in a proprietary hard coating with a UV inhibitor that greatly reduces the attacking on the shield from the sun. Also this coating provides great rain shedding and seals the shield so it can we cleaned with any glass cleaner and paper towels.

Sounds like a great replacement! For now, I've decided to live with the sparkles on/in my windshield. I'm hoping that they haven't weakened the structure so that it implodes/explodes. :-) The sparkles are only an issue when I'm at just the right angle to the sun, and I can always lower the windshield and look over it.

I finally gave up trying to see through all the "sparkles", and bought a new windshield. It was incredibly easy to remove the old one, and install the new one! The new one has "vents" which don't cause any additional wind flow on the rider, but do seem to calm down the buffeting from wind gusts and 18 wheelers. :-)

The sparkles (In my case) are the result of the windshield being sand blasted during the vicious wind storms we have in Nevada.

That's the same thing that popped into my mind when I read his post. Had exactly the same thing happen to my windshield way way back when I was stationed at Edwards AFB in the Mojave Desert. Windshield was sand blasted by the desert sand.

What one did you buy?

To solve the "sparkles" problem, I replaced the windshield. I got it from SlingMods.com for about $170. The windshield is a Show Chrome Wide Clear SM6143 Touring model. It was easy to remove the old and install the new! I made a "slip on cover" for it, so when its parked in the yard, I can cover the windshield and protect it from the ultra-bright and strong sun light we get here in NC. :-) Here's a pic of the old windshield with the sparkles clearly showing:
