Hi Spyderlovers:
As most of you know I got a oil/filter change done yesterday at a dealership in NE...headed out this morning...what a day...Blue sky...no rain gear...Starbuck's in my new cupholder...Feet firmly planted on my new Seal Floor Boards..life is great...I'm headed for Casper, WY...running the backroads. Glorious trip...got to Casper and said hey this is so much fun..Sheridan is only a couple more hrs..what the hey...
Stopped for fuel at KayCee, WY (south of Buffalo/Sheridan)...had been rolling about 6 or 7 minutes when I smell hot oil...look around for a truck or car I "apparently"hadn't seen...at that second saw the oil smoke/smell was me...quick look..no warning lites/messages...quickly got to side of road and shut down Ms Spyder..by now LOTS of smoke and stink...Bailed off thinking she was going to catch on fire...as she cooled down smoke left..and I started inspecting...oil EVERYWHERE it should not be...all over the ground, had blown out the grid all over Ms Spyder and my left side.
Ahhh now to see how great all this roadside insurance I have....but first I called dealership that did the work yesterday...they were very helpful together we found that the nearest dealer was i Billings, MT...gal from servicing dealer calls Billings dealer who calls me and says we are closed and will schedule picking you and your Spyder up in the morning. So I said...I really hadn't planned on sleeping alongside HiWay 25 tonight, but if that is the only option I will survive, but I just want you to know that when you show up in the morning I will be realllllly pissed and probably not very nice to look at first thing after a night sleeping in the sticker weeds on a slope...He asked where are you..when I told him he said oh boy I didn't ask enough ?..hang on..within 5 minutes "Tweety" - seriously Tweety calls says he will be to me in 45 minutes to pick me/Spyder up take us to motel in Buffalo, WY and Billing dealer will pick us up in am. Well, Tweety shows up in his big yellow tilt bed truck with little Tweety birds all over it...Tweety stands about 6'4 and by his assessment weighs at least 450#. he was a hoot and a half and very good at his job...had never hauled a Spyder but had called dealer and asked all the right ? then I handed him my manual and he said let me read this...wow I sooo appreciated his attitude.
So now I will see what the diagnosis is in a.m.
Keep you posted...I should have some good experiences tht might help others..besides my Marc Fischer insurance..I have BRP B.E.S.T
One of these should pay for something!!!:dontknow:

i hate to hear that hope all works out for you.im the guy from spyder fest that told you about your back tire, hoping for the best for you.

We just love your attitude

Murphy, it was an honor meeting you at SpyderFest & also at the worlds smallest WalMart there in Cuba :roflblack: You truly are on INSPIRATION!

I just love how you handled things with your road-side issues. I hope they find something simple & they get you back on the road soon.

I hope that today brings a different kind of adventure for you (at the dealership) and you are back on the road soon. I know you will find a great cup of coffee out west and it amazing how everything seem right with world after that! It was a pleasure chatting with you while waiting for the little coffee shop in Cuba to open! Safe travels.

This Travel Journal will be adding some extra chapters to a future book. Pull out the camera.
All we need now are some pic's...

You Go Girl! :2thumbs:

I don't know you; but, it appears nothing can stop you. Hope it's a simple fix and you're on your way again soon.:2thumbs:

I thought my rainy return home from :spyder2:fest was bad... I :roflblack: on the Tweety the tow trucker part!

I :roflblack: on the Tweety the tow trucker part!

Kind of reminds me of my past neighbor in Texas. Big, 6.5 tall weighing about close to 400 lbs and owned a trucking company, doing only the local jobs but stayed in the office most of the time. Always in cowboy boots and either a Stenson hat or a mesh cap, but always carried around a toy yorkie (Susie) that did not weigh more than 5 lbs and knew that it was a female since HE braided her hair and put pick ribbons. One day at the office (as he told me) he had a trucker that was incompetent and was looking for a reason to fire him. Guy walks into the office, sees the dog and stomps his foot to scare her. My neighbor fires him right there!

Never forget that story... or hearing of a big badass trucker carrying a dog that would weigh what the guy eats for lunch.:roflblack:

Great reply "gal from servicing dealer calls Billings dealer who calls me and says we are closed and will schedule picking you and your Spyder up in the morning. You sound like a fun gal.....hope to meet you some day...good luck with the Spyder fix....I think the dealer will take care of you...... keep us informed:yes:

It was great meeting you at Spyderfest, you are one cool lady.

I'm just guessing but it sounds like they may have over filled your tank or they may have not screwed in the dipstick all the way. It has to be something simple like that. Keep us posted. :doorag:

I bought my spyder from the dealer in Billings. It just so happens to be a Harley dealership as well. So far the service they have given me for my Spyder has been excellent. They should be able to get you taken care of.

Thanks for all the great words...not the latest!!!

OK forget Billings...when the Billings dealership (yep also a HD dealer) BRP told him that my Spyder had to go to nearest servicing dealer in case it turned out to be a warranty, not dealer error, issue. So I ended up at Gillette dealership...what they found was that an o-ring had not been seated properly and had worked out...the good news was that I only lost 2 qts of oil...so pretty sure there is no engine/transmission damage. Said that is why I never got any warning lites/messages...BUT said you were very wise in not trying to drive after you shut it down. So now I am an hour easterly..but tomorrow I will head west AGAIN...
Still need to get lots of cleanup done...all the shielding is oil soaked...dealer cleaned brake pads (feels they are ok..but said if anything doesn't feel right find nearest dealer!!!) Hmmmm maybe their needs to be a song written about finding the nearest dealer...much better maybe than the Heeereeees your Sign.
Also said it was all over drive belt and he steam cleaned both....
Budke's in No Platte, NE have indicated that they will reimburse me...so since I live with my glass 1/2 full will get all receipts to them when I get home...
This was a bit of a hiccup on my otherwise perfect journey to Spyderfest and back...it just proves that sometimes life doesn't always go the way you plan...but I sure am responsible for how I respond to what happens. AND I live by if a life is being threatened, I triage assess, then I react...everything else gets response with a few..oh craps thrown in for emphasis!!!!
Headed out in the am...go West "young" woman go West....

Murphy, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. I know the feeling of the "nearest" dealer thing. I was driving across Wyoming last summer and my car displayed a message that I was to not shift gears and take it to the nearest dealer. I called service and they said the nearest dealer was in Sioux Falls, SD or back in Idaho. They said if I put it in park it probably wouldn't shift back into gear. They said to pull over and they would send a tow truck.

I hope they got everything fixed for you and this is the end of your troubles. If not I'm sure Satan won't be the only one thinking oh crap she's awake.

Glad you got things roadworthy again. A motorcycle trip has always been an adventure, in part because of things like this. In my opinion, there is a good reason all motorcycles come with toolkits (or a list of dealers :D). A great attitude like yours can mean the difference between the trip being remembered as the journey from H-E-Double Toothpicks, or as a memorable series of surprises and adjustments. If anyone I know is up to the challenge, you are the one. It is a privilege to know you. Enjoy the Ryde!
