Multiple engine lights, last one almost got me run over by semi

Posted awhile back that my 2011 rt se5 has had many times in the shop because of engine codes. Throttle bodies adjusted,replaced,o2 sensor replaced, computer replaced, last time the purge on the evap tank replaced. Last Thursday just finished passing a semi at aprox 70 mph when I got the engine light and limp home and no power almost run over by the semi. Almost ready to call DMV to the this danger recalled or pulled from eing certified. Very upset!! My dealer also just finally suggested I call BRP for a customer ref number ( as a start for replacing?), why he waited for 6 months since my 4th try at fixing this lemon. Where do I go now? I might have to park this pos so I don't go over the 28000 mile limit for the state of ct lemon law. HELP!!!! Edrn

Sorry to hear of your woes. If your dealer has given up, it may indeed be time to test your state's lemon law. That is always a last resort, but sometimes necessary. I assume the dealership has been in contact with BRP's dealer tech support staff. If not, perhaps they should. Other "haunted" Spyders have been cured after going that route. If you want to report safety issues, the DMV is not the place. The NHTSA would be more appropriate. BTW, I believe Can-Am is listed as an auto there.

So now we're NOT ryding a motorcycles anymore?? :roflblack:

Sorry to hear of the issues that you've had to endure... Please keep us in the loop as to how it eventually is resolved. Good Luck!

Sorry to hear about your spyder issues. I hope you can get it resolved quickly, so you can get back on the road. Let us know what happens to help out others that might be in the same boat.

Update

Well not a lot new to report. I was at the dealership today and reminded the mgr that my mileage (mostly highway) is still at a max of 23mpg usually around 20mpg. He was on the phone with a smug sales rep from BRP who said that was good ( huh??). I think it looks like a complaint for safety needs to be made to the NHTSA and any regulatory body in the EU ( our European riders need to be safe also). I am so upset at the lack of caring for their customers, after the 4th attempt last fall this should have been taken care of. Not waiting till I was almost run down by a semi. Thanx everyone who has responded with their replies. Edrn!!

Have they tried replacing the plug wires? Plug wires are a tricky thing, and can cause all kinds of woes. The root of the problem seldom shows on the diagnostics, just the results. Reading the plugs may give a clue, too, although it is a major pain on a Spyder RT. Your Spyder sounds like it is running extremely lean, or intermittently on one cylinder. There can be a variety of causes, some of which are beyond the average dealer to diagnose. Forget the idiot sales reps from BRP. You need to talk to their tech experts. Since your dealer doesn't seem to be willing or able to contact them, I'd contact BRP Customer Support. I don't know if Carlo is back yet, but if not Crystelle can help put you in touch with the right people. Your Spyder probably can be cured, but it may take the right expert and some time to do so.

Today's update

Spyder wants to replace the throttle bodies again! Have sent complaint to NHTSA today. Spoke with Len at Cowtown about the rear shock and discussed the problems I'm having. He said he's only seen this 2-3 times nationwide. Told me to have BRP replace throttle bodies,ECU and engine wiring harness all at the same time and run updates. Spoke with dealership and Natasha and mentioned this. Nat said she would check with the tech as to why he did not do this. At this point if they are only goingq to change the throttle bodies the answer is no and the CT dot lemon law forms are going in. I no longer feel safe on this bike!!!! Thanx for your inputs ESP Len listening today. Edrn Just spoke with Garganos the tech rep is only authorizing the throttle bodies to be replaced. I guess it is cheaper than replacing the whole bike which is what I will now fight for under the CT lemon law this qualified after the fourth attempt now we are at the sixth. I guess the news media might help. Len they must not have trusted your experience. Very angry now!!!! Edrn

Number

I have already done that. Would have done it last fall if Gargano's had suggested it, like they finally did last week. The more I try to work with them the more frustrated I get!!!! So I have to submit the repair orders and other paperwork to CT and have already made a safety complaint to NHTSA. Wish the techs would listen to a experienced spyder man like Len.
You need to speak directly to BRP Customer Service and get a case number. They have helped many people such as yourself. Do it asap.

Last try

Gave in one last time. Natasha atBRP basically said Len at Cowtown was out of line giving me advice. I believe you Len. Have advised Progressive Insurance about the limp home mode above 65mph as unsafe. Maybe if they start raising rates or refusing to insure these bikes BRP will fix this issue. I will be letting the other motorcycle insurers know about this safety problem! Still waiting to see if this fix works. Told them this was the last chance, Natasha seemed to agree. Will let you all know. Edrn

Keep building your paper trail...
But why would you think that calling your insurance company would help with ANY part of this ordeal??

Looks like a full court press.
PI hear a lot of people here saying that due to the nature of forums, the folks with issues related to reliability, safety, etc., thought few in number tend to be the most vocal.

What ever happened to " if it saves one life it is worth it".

My wife and I have never experienced the dreaded limp mode and pray that we don't.

Saving one life

Thanks. You are right. My feeling was (on the safety issue, not just my bikes troubles), if the insurance companies stopped insuring due to the limp mode over 65mph, BRP would have to get the patch done sooner. They might make it a priority if there sales were being affected. As a former insurance agent I know how iCard it is to write a policy when the companies put a safety hold on a vehicle. As a nurse safety is one of my greatest concerns, that's one of the reasons I choose this bike! Very much reconsidering that choice now. Edrn
