Desert Spyder

Monday, I was on my way to Riverside for a PGR mission when I got a call from my wife to go to the hospital where Daniel was at. She got a call from Beth but it was cut off. The hospital is a horrible place for the cell phone and where are the pay phones these days? I was stuck in traffic about 2 miles north of 138 going SB because of a big rig accident about 10 miles away near Devore. I had to do something because the Spyder is like a shark out of the water if its not moving in warm weather. Remember Phelan Days gang? As luck would have it, Cleghorn was just ahead, 15-20 minutes or 3 miles away, whichever came first, and I saw this as my window of opportunity. If I stayed on the freeway it would take well over 2 hrs to get to Devore. So I drove on the shoulder of the freeway, illegally I'm sure, to go down the ramp. Going down old 66 the traffic was flowing good, until...
Old 66 turned out worse than the freeway but the Spyder was made for adventure. I took the RT down asphalt not meant for Spyders, nor anyone else for that matter.
For several miles I went down sections of the highway that is blocked off to the traffic. When I came to a K-rail, I offroaded and went around it. When I couldn't do that anymore I went down the shoulder. Why? I'm not sure because absolutely nobody was on the EB side of the highway for the next 5 miles. NOBODY! A two-wheeler was doing the same thing. Only bright people drive on shoulders of abandoned highways in bumper-to-bumper traffic. And the brightest, has 3 wheels. I even had the belly of the byke cleaned off by the flowering flora hanging over the shoulder. I'm glad I don't have any allergies.
I get to Kenwood Ave, where a big rig had rolled off the freeway onto the SB onramp and caught fire, toasted, went through the neighborhoods of Devore, and caught the freeway again. I dash to the hospital, up to ICU, and ask my daughter what was wrong? She said..."Nothing". Doh!
I think I'll call my byke "Mr. Toad" for the wild ryde I had that day. The RT is 2 inches wider than the GS or RS and I could have used that 2 inches!
Today I have 3 missions in Riverside. I plan for a mellow ryde. I'm not sure about Mr. Toad however.
