I'm thinking about spending a week in the Mount Rushmore area. What time of year is the tourist crowd less and the weather still good for riding? I'll be traveling from western WA State. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Three Wheeler Rally in Deadwood SD 11-16 July 2017

You have the Deadwood 3 wheeler rally from 11-16 July 2017. I went the first two years and did a lot of rides in the area which included Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Devils Tower, Eye of the needle... etc. It is worth it to attend.

Regards,

Michael

After Labor Day is great. The weather is still in the 80's. The tourists are pretty much gone. Most places are open. A little more low key than full blown tourist season.

Usually the "herd" thins out in early September. Emphasis on EARLY, or you could be
dealing with winter weather. It is a lovely area to visit. Maybe not as rustic as it used to be.

You're going to have fun there. It was on be of the best trips I ever took. Don't go during Sturgis.

I've been there twice and it is an amazing area to ride. The roads are excellent and the scenery is awesome. You won't regret it.

Hill City

Got back 3 weeks ago. Wonderful 2 week trip to the area. Don't go during the Sturgis rally ( with 500,000 of your closest friends)nojoke. We stayed in Hill city and branched out daily. ( 5 days) Weather is always a possibility so be prepared.
Get to Rushmore early in the day. I would wait for the mid summer tourists to go home.

There is a beautiful restaurant at Mount Rush with very scenic views. The food is excellent! I can say you'll have a great time regardless when you go, I was there twice, June and August. Tons great riding in the area, too many to list. Best wishes and POSTS PICS.

Anytime is good in that part of the world. However, I would not suggest going during the annual Sturgis week cuz there is a lot of those crazy Harley people on the roads. we are headed that way next week to take in the 3-wheel rally in Deadwood. Lots of Spyders will be there AND some of the best riding in America!!!
this is our 4th consecutive year and we never get tired of riding in and around the Black Hills of SD.
BIG F (NISR - as in Nebraska Iowa Spyder Ryders)

We went in early to mid June and on a Saturday! The key was getting there early in the day. We arrived at 10:00 in the morning. We had no traffic on the way up, and the crowds were small. We left at noon and it was getting crowded!

We were there in early June. Didn't see many Spyders though. Did you see a Circuit Yellow RT????

Thanks for all your comments. They were very helpful. Our anniversary is in Sep. so we are planning to go around the third week of the month. KAOS mentioned Hill City so we are going to check out staying there. Thanks again!

Is no one going to mention Wall Drug as a destination?

I wouldn't mention it. I found it to be a tourist trap of junk ..

Now if you want to see really neat junk go to the Pioneer Auto Museum.. Really nice folks running the place.
