• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Now I am not pleased and don't understand the cause for the viscosity drop. There is an error, mine, on the report for the first Mobil 1 analysis. The oil filter had been changed so there was 2K miles on new filter and new oil. The second 2K analysis was at a total of 4K on the oil and filter. I've a sample kit in stock and a supply of Mobil 1 4T that I bought on a Mobil 1 promo so I think I'm going to change the oil and filter at 5K on the current crankcase full, run it 5K on one filter and see how the numbers come out. Perhaps an analysis at 2K was premature and the results at 4K are confirming what Steve from BRPcare says about the shear. Flat don't know.

Jay, I don't understand it either. Other tests of Mob1 have stood up much better than that. Maybe the lab screwed up?
The last test I did with M1 was a 12.0 with 4559 miles on it.

Personally, I don't think filters have much/any to do with end results.
 
I agree with the filter not being that important at such low mileage on oil. That's why I'm going to stick with the Mobil 1 and go with a single 5K mile analysis.

With all of the testing of oils; has anyone found any REALLY good reason, to NOT use what BRP specifies for use in the Spyder? :dontknow:
If their engineers say that it'll last for a year, (or 9,300 miles...), why do we doubt them so much?
They wouldn't dare make that suggestion if they thought that warranty claims would increase...

I think there are some unreported factors which can be affecting test results. For example. A lightly loaded RS ridden in mostly flat, freeway conditions will show much less shear than a loaded 1330 RT with 2 riders pulling a trailer in mountainous conditions. So it is not that surprising to get a spectrum of results.

It would be more surprising to get greatly different results from similar operating conditions.
 
I agree with PMK's position that BRP wouldn't be foolish enough or careless enough to recommend an oil change interval that wouldn't hold up with any of the specified API service classifications. Steve from BRPcare has also explained that small engined sharing lubrication with wet clutch transmissions are the reason for the early viscosity shearing and then leveling off. Despite the drop in voscosity of my latest analysis I'm still experiencing much smoother shifting with the Mobil 1 than with the XPS blend and that will keep me sticking with the Mobil.
 
It's not unusual for oil to break down in the first 500 miles after an oil change where it levels off. That's mainly due to contaminates left over from the previous oil. This is mainly blow by, condensation and discoloration. That's most noticeable though with mineral oils. With synthetics though the colour can be misleading.

Agree with ulflyer -- the shear down is not a given. On my 1330, the Amsoil oil I tested at 4500 miles was 13.2 viscosity, still well within the 40-range of 12.6 - 16.3. I'd be really surprised if Mobil 1 was much different.
 
I will be sending my sample of M1 oil in in about 2-3 weeks and I'll add my results to the mix. I will have about 4k on mine, so we'll see what the lab comes up with.

As far as the BRP vs. issue, even at 4k I still have less startup engine noise and smoother shifting than with the BRP semi oil.
 
I've had enough time to think this issue through some more and I'm now a little over 5K on the Mobil 1 and am going to keep riding it. I might have it analyzed at 7,500 or so just because the kit is on the shelf and paid for. I'll also make a change decision before heading off to Spyderfest depending on how much riding I get in during tax season. There's much merit in just saying :cus: it, BRP knows what they're doing.
