Mississippi Rising-Crossing Advice

A few riders from Woodstock Illinois heading to Spyderfest and was planning on crossing the river at Louisiana,MO.
With the river approaching flood stages, is there someone near the Louisiana crossing that could give a visual on Tuesday?

Maybe update this thread if riders are crossing on Tuesday. We were looking to bypass the St Louis area and stick to the back roads.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not near there, but I am very familiar with the area. Your problem is not the bridge or the MO side, but rather the low lying ground and roads on the Ill. side. My suggestion would be to check the IDOT web side for road closings.

I just read where that bridge was closed. Don't know if they re-opened it, but doubt it since the river has yet to crest. It is beginning to appear that crossing the Miss might have to be done on one of the major bridges (Quad-cities, or St. Louis). Even Burlington, IA closed one of its bridges.

I am crossing at Hannibal... it is still open so far, and doubt it will be closed -- since the bridge and roadway are fairly high above the river.

I am leaving today (mid-day) with a stay-over in Hannibal tonight. Am riding alone down to Springfield because of a back-ailment that may require me to stop and stretch more often than a group would appreciate.

Oh... and I'll report on what I see in Hannibal so you'll know; but I cannot imagine that bridge would ever close -- at least not unless its pylons become unstable from too much water. :yikes:

I saw in the paper this morning,in the Grafton area,the Brussels ferry is closed..I would bet the Ste. Genevieve farther south ferry is also not running..

Barges are not even moving in that water. Too much water, moving too fast for large boats/barges to control...:yikes:

The rivers all through the Midwest are going to be above flood stage for a week or two at best. Many of them have crested yet.

I am here in Hannibal, MO now on my way to Spyderfest. The girl at the desk said the Army Corp of Engineers told here they thought the Mississippi river crested already -- today.

I wouldn't dare argue with them, but there is still a LOT of water in northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota that has yet to make down this far. As an amateur... I say cresting will occur Tuesday.

Anyway... the original post wanted to know if the bridge at Hannibal, MO (Rt-72) bridge is open. It is open... no problems crossing here.

Memphis bridges are pretty high, so doubt they will have problems. However, you should do some checking on your route through Tenn, as they have several places where roads and bridges are closed.

I took off mid-day today and am staying in Hannibal tonight. It was fairly brisk on the ride down. I wore a lot of layers, and leather chaps to block the chill. I brought my snowmobile outfit just in case... because I was not going to freeze.

Well... I didn't freeze to death, as I suspected... but the wind was incredibly wicked today. I have ridden for years and today's wind gusts were at just the right angle to play the devil at times in keeping the Spyder in my lane.

I can imagine if someone were still a bit uncomfortable with wind gusts as I fought all day... they might have turned around.

Hannibal was 65 when I arrived... their high-temp for the day... and it was still a "cool" 65 at that.

Looking at Ozark weather for the week... it looks like mid-sixties for an average, with the potential for rain all-day on Tuesday, and a 30% chance on two other days in the week.

Everyone from Illinois should already know how to dress.

Those from the southern regions... bring more layers than you think you need. The air has a briskness to it for being in the mid-sixties. If it warms-up, you can always layers off...
