Missing chrome ring on gauges

:helpsmilie:HELP!
Has anyone else lost one of the chrome rings on either the fuel gauge, or the temp gauge? I just noticed the temp gauge was missing the chrome ring. Checked all around the shop to no avail. Must have come off on a ride, but why? :dontknow: I called my dealer and was told that since I made modifications (adding chrome and paint) that it probably would not be covered under warranty. :hun: Really? Really? You gotta be kidding me. :yikes:
I would appreciate any input you might have on this issue.

How could adding chrome void a warranty. :yikes: You must have bought the chrome accessories from another dealer or didn't let the dealer install it. Maybe that's why dealerships sell chrome accessories. This way they can void warranties if need be.

:agree:Shouldn't make a difference on warranty.
I bought all the chrome from a different dealer and installed it all myself. Hmmm.....

Just tell your dealer/stealer to put that in writing because BRP needs a copy....:spyder:...

I might be wrong but I would think for chrome ring to come off guage it would have to been removed from panel,,,Think about it:spyder:

Not sure when and if that gauge would have been removed. It doesn't come off/out to add chrome handlebars. The chrome ring is just a cover over the black plastic.

The Magnuson-Moss Act prohibits a company from denying warranty coverage due to modifications or the addition of accessories, unless it can be shown that the modifications or accessories caused or contributed to the failure. That is Federal law. Since those conditions do not apply here, your warranty is intact. Thell your dealer you'd be glad to let your lawyer explain it, if they want to play hardball. Dealers like that give me a rash!

That's the problem... because you bought it in a different dealer and installed it yourself, the dealer FEELS :lecturef_smilie: that you have voided the warranty on the parts and should not be covered. Like Scotty said, it is against the law... BUT since the only damage here was the slipping of the ring, the dealer can deny this because a) they did not install the ring and b) it is only cosmetic damage and not a mechanical/electrical issue.

I would write BRP and explain the situation. They might just ship you another ring but as far as getting a dealer to instal it...:yikes:

Just to clarify: The ring in question, is one that came on the Spyder from the factory. I installed all the new 2011 chrome accessories on the 2010 bike, but not that ring.
The gauge ring did not have to be removed for any reason, while installing the chrome accessories, or when the panels were painted. I have looked, but can't even find it in any parts catalogs.:dontknow: Dealer said it comes with the gauge and I would probably have to order a whole new gauge.
:spyder:Thats what is bugging me. It should be covered by warranty.
The dealer said I would need to bring the bike in, let them take pictures, check the VIN, report the mileage and then contact BRP to see if it is covered.:hun: A lot of time without my bike for a simple chrome ring, that I don't even mind paying for. Just want my ring!:gaah:

Don't let the roadblocks that they throw in your way discourage you. If adding chrome was a crime most of us would already be on death row... What you added to the bike in no way affected how those rings were attached... Scotty is right and your warranty certainly should apply in this case!

I have one of the gauges in my hand and it seems that the chrome ring is glued to the gauge, I tried to unscrew it from gauge and it would not turn.

Again... call BRP on that!:chat:

The dealer has certain hoops he must jump through, too. He will need to see your Spyder and make a work order, then submit it to BRP for approval. There should be no problem having it covered under warranty, unless your dealer tries to create a problem. In that case, you could contact Carlo. You will need an entire replacement gauge. If you want the warranty repair, you must go through the procedure. Inconvenient...maybe, but most repairs are. Sounds like it is up to you now.

Thanks Scotty! :clap:You seem to know quite a bit about these issues. Appreciate your input.
Do you know how long the warranty is on something like that? I checked my papers today and found that we bought the Spyder on May 25, 2010. That means that today, May 24th is the last day for any one year warranties, lol. Hope not, but would be just my luck.

You have a two-year warranty on everything but battery, tires, and normal wear parts, unless you purchased an extended warranty. the details are in your Owners Guide.

"The case of the missing ring"
Mystery has been solved. Met with my dealer this morning. :chat:
When I had the Spyder in for a service, the dealer replaced a faulty fuel gauge (covered under a service bulletin) on my 2010 RT A/C, (which came with the black ring gauges) with a chrome ring gauge. It seems there were no "black" gauges available at that time. :dontknow:

Now he is going to send this info to CanAm and see if they will either let him replace the existing chrome ring gauge with a black one, or replace the black temp gauge with a chrome one. I told him I didn't really care either way, as long as they both match.

Thanks to all for your input. It is great to know we can share ideas and problems on this site. Thanks, Lamonster!!

Is this the same dealer that told you to go pound sand because you made modifications to your Spyder? And after all that they were the cause of the problem in the first place. :yikes: Anyway I'm glad there was a happy ending.
