Miles per tank

How many miles per tank are you getting?

I have been filling up at one bar with the light on at about 155 miles. I would like to know how far I can push it in a pinch? I don't know if I am filling it up enough? I can see the fuel but it's not all the way to the top when I fill up....:dontknow: I do understand it does depend on riding style but would like some input.....:chat:

I have only gone down to no bars once and I got nervous. I had almost 170 miles on at that point and I still only filled to 5.7gallons. My gas light comes on at two bars, I usually ride until I have one bar and I'm at about 150 miles on the trip odometer. At 150 miles I start thinking about fuel. I know I can probably go another 20 miles at least if I need too. If I'm in an unfamiliar place and I don't know where the gas stations are, I start thinking about fuel at 2 bars. I guess I don't really care what the specs say about the size of the tank and all, I just don't want to run dry myself. I currently am getting about 31-34 mpg in town driving so I'm pretty happy with that.

Tank mileage

I generally ride to the 160-165 mark before refueling. Just don't want to get to the "get off and walk point"

Probably average 30 mpg with ours. I put in 5.9 gallons once, several miles afer all the bars disappeared. Didn't make me comfortable. We usually start looking for a station after about 120 miles, just to be safe. That is generally 3 bar territory.

That's bad mileage for a 2 cyl bike,I get almost twice that milage with a 6 cyl Goldwing that weighs more than the Spyder.

It's not the weight, it's the aerodynamics and the rolling friction. In other words...drag. The Spyder is dirty aerodynamically, and has three large, flat wheels on the ground...at low pressures, to boot. I don't think idling at 1,400 rpm like a Top Fuel car helps, either. Bad mileage, yes, but way fun! I believe they could do better, but it will decrease performance, and will require some styling changes. Don't want the Arachnid to look like a car.

BTW, I don't know how you can get 60 mpg with a Wing. That's amazing! My BMW RT never has exceeded 50, and normally gets 40-48 mpg.

Good post, Scotty. Also; I think you have to look at the Spyder as more a 'Hot Rod', and a Gold Wing as a 'Cruiser'. :D

I said ALMOST twice the mileage!

Regarding the aerodynamics, don't sell the Spyder short - the Spyder has a pretty sleek airfoil when compared to other trikes. The bad mileage really can't be the aerodynamics since the two fenders on my trike are almost flat surfaces right in the airstream and the rear of the trunk is like a suction cup. The Wing has 3 wheels as well and weighs over 1000 lbs., and has 4 extra pistons to drag along.

I'm pretty sure this is a case of just poor fuel efficiency in the engine design, for the weight the Spyder and as sleek as it is, it should have considerably more fuel milage. This was exactly the same case as my V-rod 20-30 mpg

At the factory tour in Valcourt, the Rotax rep stated that the engine was setup with a compromise between performance and economy. It gets decent fuel economy but there is quite a bit of 'get up and go' there when you want it.

I agree . . . the problem is the Spyder was in concept possible a bit too early, with the fuel prices gone wild you can believe that fuel economy will be right there at the top of the list in R&D.

Sort of reminds me about of the outboard engines - for years they were filthy engines that burned massive amounts of fuel & oil, then all of a sudden the Gov. got involved. The new Mercury Optimax 6 cylinder engine was still a two stoke engine yet it used 70 % less 2 stoke oil and the fuel economy went up to a 75-80% increase over their standard 6 cyl engine.

Me and my wife ride alot on it at the same time and with both of us on the bike riding alot of city roads. It is by far 3 times better them my 2007 F-150 we are getting alot of time from 38 to 42 per gallon and that is not to bad from my view point nad wallet

mpg

Wife's Spyder -1st. ride 2nd.fill up we pushed it to 194.5 miles. 1.1 miles from a gas station. It was OUT OF GAS.On my bike went to station got .8 gals. in a water jug. Put it in the spyder rode 1.1 miles put 5.4 gals. would not take anymore, full to the top 6.2 gals total.
You guys are amazing on fuel.
I went 2 up and got 25 mpg. I get 25-28 mpg 1 up in the city.
I am 200 lbs
How in the world is there such a difference.

Just filled up for the 1st time. Had 2 bars when I pulled in the fueling stop and took 4 gallons to fill it up. 30mpg during break in - all standard equipment. I'm happy:yes::yes: my other ride gets 12mpg and it was over $80 to fill it up Thursday .

Love my :spyder::2thumbs:.

My light comes on at one bar, which is when I start looking for fuel. The GPS tells me where the next station is located. I usually have somewhere around 160 to 180 miles when I buy gas (87 octane). Mileage depends upon what you do with the throttle.

i have only been getting 87

Not getting on it much just nice easy riding and it is a blast

riding around local and me and the wife have put over 150 miles on it is just wondeful. My wife said if she would have known how much fun this bike was we would have gotten one long ago.

we enjoy ours alot and the mog is a huge plus
