Milage problem SOLVED

I installed a Two Brothers muffler at the end of last riding season and I didn't get to check it out until this season. I was impressed by the increase in horsepower:D but disappointed by an apparent increase in fuel consumption.:yikes: It went from about 28mpg to 21mpg. I (and most of you that weighed in on the problem) thought that that increase in fuel consumption did not seem possible. I should note that I was using my Trip Odometer to check milage.
Well, I managed to hit the road yesterday and do a proper fuel check. This time I used the regular odometer to check milage and, yippee:D, I got 31mpg.:2thumbs: I also noticed that my Trip Odometer was misbehaving.
Trip-A and Trip-B were arbitrarily switching as to which one would accumulate miles:gaah::gaah: For total milage you needed to ADD both A and B. If you use only A or only B you only get SOME of the miles you traveled. This was why the apparent fuel consumption was so bad:lecturef_smilie:
Next, I need to figure what the heck is wrong with my Trip odometer.:dontknow:

Glad you found the "problem" with the fuel mileage... I am on the fence about putting a Two Bros on my RT and the fall off in mileage was pushing me the other way... Thanks for the update. I just had my instrument cluster replaced for a sticking tach and it sounds like you might be in line for another cluster as well...

Yeah, I think I'm due for a trip to the dealer (300mi round trip). I'm glad I was able to offer some useful info for someone. The TB Muffler sounds GREAT.:2thumbs:

mileage

I use the data part of my Garmin. the bikes speedo reads 2 miles an hour faster than the gps.

Are you sure you aren't just accidentally pausing the trip odometers? They have to show "Pause" to be engaged. I do mileage off the main odometer readings. The tenths are not important for that distance. It is a liitle more bother to look at my records of the mileage at the previous fill-up, but the main odo cannot be stopped in error.

I used the main odometer for the "official" tracker. I was using the trip odometer when I first got out this season.
I am not sure what you are referring to regarding the "Pause".
As near as I can figure, If I select "Trip A", it will (sometimes) count up for a few miles and then it will stop. If I go look at "Trip B" at this time, it will reflect the additional miles that were added since the time A quit working. If you add both A and B, their total mileage will reflect the change in mileage on the main odometer. I don't quite see where "Pause" comes into this.
The same result could be achieved if you had a switch and could arbitrarily switch between the inputs for A and B. In the end, it would be A+B that would be your total mileage since zeroing both trip computers.

Bootie, I only use my GPS for mileage. My Wing odometer is off 2-3%. Try your GPS, setting the mileage to zero when you gas up and see what you get...even better, let it run for five or six fill ups and get an overall reading...

Where if you buy your 2Bro? How much trouble to install. Dealer wants $70 and retail for a 2Bro plus sales tax. Thanks

The 2Bros exhaust was the first mod I did to my RT. I don't really know if it improved milage (I get about 30, 28 pulling the trailer) but I love the sound. It took only about 45 min. I think I could do it again in about 30.

Yours sounds like it has lost its mind, for sure. I have accidentally paused a trip meter (or switched them) with an errant thumb, though, while scrolling through. The odd figure always puzzles me, until I finally realize the error of my ways. :D

To those with the Two Brothers slip on, have you noticed a stronger exhaust smell when you're riding? I didn't ride mine very long before doing the slip on, but it sure seems like the exhaust smell is strong when riding. On mine, the end of the muffler is about even with the bottom of the saddlebag, so I assume the fumes are curling up behind and coming at me from behind.

Rudy, what is involved in changing to the 2Bro. Everything else seems complicated on the RT...just wondering. I am not going to do any mods until I get a few miles on Red...then see how it goes. Where is a good place to buy a 2Bro?

I have Cobra's on my Wing and love the sound and I have done the hot rodding for my lifetime. I had a couple of BSA's and a Triumph years ago and recently had a 1997 Suzuki Bandit. I had it reworked by a professional m/c racer...fast....then a 2007 Bandit 1250, also pretty quick....

When I rode the 2011 RT yesterday at the motocycle show, it seemed pretty peppy....but I would do the 2Bro for the sound, not performance...

Nope:D

Are you sure it's not just burn off from a new muffler?:dontknow:
