• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Beware of people calling saying they're from Microsoft its a scam Microsoft does not called individual users ,on your phone. it will say from Kansas, they want you to go to your computer and open a link on your computer to infect it.

Well....

I don't answer the phone. If they leave a credible message I will call back, but they never do. :bowdown:

I like to keep them on the phone as long as possible. That way they're hurting fewer people. A few weeks ago I was fixing lunch when one of these guys called. I asked him if he knows what perogies are. That seemed to confused him, so I explained how I was cooking them. As soon as he asked me to make changes to config files, I gave him a reason to hate me and hung up.

Last year I was getting 2 or 3 calls a month like that. Sometimes it was Microsoft calling. Sometimes it was Windows calling. That has stopped for now.

Now I am getting a lot of phishing emails say that there is something wrong with my PayPal account. They give me this very convenient link to log in. Not falling for that trap.

I get the calls often as well. The man (or woman) always has a strong Indian (from India) accent. I am very often highly impolite.

The scam is quite involved. They ask unsuspecting people to open configuration files and change some settings. Then they have control over your computer. Your computer will not function properly. They will then extort money from you to get your computer running again. There is no reason to be polite to these people. They do not work for Microsoft, and they are not going to help you. They often prey on elderly people who might not be tech savvy. Don't buy their lies. Hang up on them.

I've gotten those calls, too. They say something like it's an urgent matter for all microsoft users. But all our machines are Apple, now!!

:D I just tell them to call my Nigerian Prince; he's the one with the money! :roflblack:

Thats is a good one. When they have called us and say something about Windows I ask if they do both inside and outside and if they remove screens etc... They generally get mad eventually and hang up on me.

When they talk about windows; I tell them that I'm glad that they called! I've been wanting to buy storm shutters for a couple of years, and just hadn't gotten around to it yet. :D

I had similar calls they seemed to have stopped end of last year:dontknow:, & here i am ready for the next one so I can say "The police confiscated my computer! And want to talk to you!!!:lecturef_smilie:
:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

This scam has been going on for a long time. I have a few different responses to them, depending on my mood. Once, I said : "Thank God, you've called back. I filed a request for assistance with Microsoft almost an hour ago!" That got them excited - but what came next really got them wound up. I said I was filling in for the regular IT guy who was on vacation, and all the servers were having problems, Here is where they really got excited and brought another guy on line who spoke better English - I told them the bank needed to open in a couple hours! They started telling me what to type, and I'd ask them to repeat it, with me, repeating each letter, slowly back to them, and getting it wrong, every few letters. They really thought they were going to hack a bank. After a few minutes, I hung up.

Another time, I had one screaming obscenities at me. As he started his spiel, I stopped him and said: "I know you are a scammer and are trying to steal from me. As we are talking, I hope some :cus:, just like you is on the phone with your mother, stealing all her money." He went nuts and went off on me - I was laughing as I hung up.

I really hate thieves - I wish there was a way to stop these :cus:.

Yep

These calls don't just come from Kansas ToTo, they come from all over. They will say they are from Microsoft and that they are calling about your computer. I always ask which computer are you calling about? They say the one that is running Windows. I ask which windows are they talking about. I keep them going as long as I can. I love to f#*# with them as long as I have time. They usually end up with F you mister. It is pretty much a lot of fun!
