Michigan Helmet Law.....

The Michigan Senate voted to repeal our helmet law today. Riders not wanting to wear helmets would have to be 21, carry extra insurance and have passed a MC safety course.

Not sure if our Governor is going to sign the bill or not.........

Uh-oh...
I smell a variety of conflicting opinions getting ready to lock horns! :yikes:
Folks are entitled to ride how they see fit as long as it complies with the statutes...
But I'd still wear my bucket!

Ask a rider who doesn't brlieve in wearing a lid and shield if they've ever run through a swarm of June Bugs at speed...
I'd almost bet some serious coin that they haven't... If they had, they be a convert for sure! :roflblack:

I'll be wearing my helmet regardless...I was in a bad motorcycle accident 5 years ago and would have lost my life had it not been for the DOT approved helmet. 19 operations on my legs later I'm still riding....with a helmet. Each to thier own I believe.

I wonder how much more the insurance rates would be ??? If NY had that law I would ride without one, but my contacts would dry out very quickly.

It will be interesting to find out how this pans out. I'm all for individual freedoms... and people should have the right to be stupid if they choose.

That being said... I see problems:

1. How does a cop know if you have met the requirements unless he pulls you over?
2. How does this affect out of state riders? Do they need the extra insurance, etc...??

Interesting that states like Indiana are looking into enacting a helmet law-- and they've been well known for their non-helmet stance for a long time.

The seat belt laws really came down to Federal money.... any state could repeal their seat belt law tomorrow if they wanted--- but they would lose big bucks from the Fed for highways, etc.... My guess is this will eventually happen with the helmet law too.....

I would wear a helmut of course but there are times I wish I did not have to, such as moving across a parking lot to find a new parking slot or traveling in a parade. I live in WA state, no chance they would consider this in the near future, lol.

Regards,

Randy

PA. is a no helmet state with some restrictions.
Me i will always wear a helmet, That gos back to my steel pot days.
Indian Larry was only going 5 mph . :(

Pretty sure you don't have to wear a helmet in parking lots-- at least not in Michigan as they are private property. Just like you can't get a ticket for running a parking lot stop sign, or speeding.

Texas and Florida is already doing that. Here is a state by state Helmet law easy to read chart.

I firmly believe that if your going to make the choice to ride without a helmet then you are also giving your tacit approval or authorization for organ donation without reservation or input from your family should you meet your demise. This would help decrease the long waits for organs and might give further impetus to those who do dangerous(but fun and enjoyable) activities to be properly outfitted prior to partaking. IMO:ohyea::ohyea:

If you think my liver will do you any good, take it !!! I would advise you not to drive a car for at least 8 hours after you get it though. :roflblack:

Indian Larry was standing on his seat when he fell off:yikes:.................... I've read that most head injuries are more attributable to the height of the fall, as opposed to the speed of the fall.

That said, I don't care for my government trying to protect me from myself. Kudos to the Michigan legislature. And I do wear a helmet almost all the time, even though I live in a state where it's not required.

I was such an idiot !!!! I was in your state on a ride a couple of weeks ago, and idiot me missed my chance to strip my helmet off for the first time. :gaah:

I find it strange that one wouldn't have to wear a helmet to ride a bike but have to wear a seat belt in a car???????
