I grew up in Braintree MA, and spent the better part of a summer near Smokey Corners, IA.

Here are a few others I've been through in NL, Come By Chance, Blow Me Down, Conception Bay, Joe Batt's Arm. NL has many odd place names.

What I've never figured out is why the city is pronounced New Orlie ens, or New Or lens, but the parish is Or leeens! They're both spelled Orleans!

North, South Carolina. That's confusing.

Well i sort of get North, South Carolina, North, South Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia all geographically related. However what I don't get is Kansas and ArKansas. What direction is Ar? ArKansas is Southeast of Kansas so shouldn't it be called Sekansas? Betcha Cruzr Joe has an answer for that

There used to be some wonderful places along the "Yellow River" in Colorado. Silverton, Durango soon to be NM, NV, UT , AZ and CA.

We have a few unusual names in NZ, Mainly based around our Maori Culture. If the letters "wh" are together it is pronounced as an "F"
So we have places like Whakatane (fa ka ta nee) Whakamaru (fa ka maa roo) and this one even Kiwis struggle with Whangamomana (fung a mom a na) I worked and lived in a place in Perth West Australia called Dog Swamp
