Master Cylinder Caps

Hi folks,

According to BRP, my '08 has had the recall completed.

However, my master cylinder(s) still leak a little, right at the caps.

I went to a BRP dealer to buy two new caps to see if that might solve the problem.

They only sell the master cylinder complete @ $85, they won't sell just the caps. Apparently, this is per BRP.

Any thoughts on where I might buy just two new caps?

Thanks,

Jerry Baumchen

If the recall was completed but not fixed contact BRP! Not a simple lil warranty thing but a recall its all on them.

If BRP won't fix the problem I'd take one of the caps to an auto parts store and see if they can match it up. Last time I looked at the caps on my 14 rtl they looked like common auto master cyl caps.

Edit: Looks like your dealer is blowing smoke up your butt, I just checked the BRP parts site and the caps are available. They also have the same part # for the 2008 machines as the 2014's.

2008 219800058 Cap And Diaphragm Kit $15.99 USD Legend Available
2014 219800058 Cap And Diaphragm Kit $15.99 USD Legend Available

Edit#2: Link to the BRP parts look up.

Edit#3 Did a Google search BRP 219800058 and found a ton of sources for the caps and also looks like this issue has been talked about here on SL before. Here is the Google link.

There you go....

This place rocks...:yes: just make sure you install them right. There is a right and a wrong , vented part to the rear or high side of the resivouirs....

If it's a recall and wasn't fixed and still leaks it wasn't fixed.

Had a recall on fuse box covers oň mine. covers kept falling off.

They put covers on upside down :gaah:

2008 Can-Am Spyder GS Roadster
Brake Fluid Reservoir Cap Replacement
January 11, 2008

Dear Can-Am Roadster Owner,

This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act and other applicable laws. Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. and BRP US Inc. (‘BRP’) are conduction a voluntary safety recall of certain Can-Am Roadster vehicles. Our records indicate that the brake inspection and/or repair procedure has not yet been performed on your vehicle. BRP sincerely apologizes to ask you to have our Can-Am Roadster Dealer perform this procedure as well as an additional repair.

What is the potential problem?

It was identified that a limited quantity of Roadster Spyder vehicles may have one or two defective brake fluid reservoir caps and an abnormal quantity of air in the service brake system. This could potentially degrade brake performance.

No mention of a leaking cap as the problem. I would think by the explanation. Some caps did not have a diaphragm in them.

In regards to the caps, the recall was that they just made a little slit or v shaped cut on in rubber underside. The cut needs to be clocked near the bubble thats on top of the cap. When you install the caps, the bubble needs to be aft when the cap locks. Even the new ones leak fluid and eat paint if they are locked forward. The cap bubbles dont lock perfectly aft, they are a little off set.

Hi AMTJIM,

Re: the recall was that they just made a little slit or v shaped cut on in rubber underside. The cut needs to be clocked near the bubble thats on top of the cap.

Here is what my front master cylinder cap looks like. If there is a little slit there, I do not see it. However, I do see a very tiny v-slit on the inside edge of the outer edge of the cap right at the 3 o'clock position in this photo; your thoughts????:

This is how I have them now. They were pointed somewhat forward when I bought the Spyder. Photo taken while standing on the right side of the Spyder.

I got the BRAKE FAILURE signal this morning, so I topped them up. Actually, just topped up the front one ( the one on the right in the photo ). I will be buying two new caps in a few weeks, so am hoping that will help with the leaking.

So far, no brake fluid on any painted body parts ( at least not that I can see ).

Update: I just called the parts guy at the dealer and gave him the part number. He said that they should be in by Friday.

Again, Thank You.

Yes, and had that paper towel thing myself on the '08 I had until this was brought up on here. I think you can rotate the v closer to the top bubble, too if not already there. When I picked up a 2012 I owned briefly, man I was mad to find it dribbling just from the ride home and paint was already raised, sticker on swing arm disolved and peeling. The caps were both forward from dealer, not sure this is common knowldege for them yet either.
