M/C License - Yes/No?

Hi folks,

I was told this morning that, effective the first of the year, Oregon will no longer require a M/C endorsement to ride a 3-wheeler.

I will try to check with my son on this & see what he says.

If they go the no license route, I wonder if they will go the no helmet route also.

I'll bet they will still requier the three wheel license. They have had that for a while. I doubt the state would miss an opportunity to make money.

back in 2008, the Governor of South Carolina signed a Bill that exempted all 3 wheelers from the requirement of a MC endorsement... we can ride a 2 wheeler with a side-car or any other 3 wheeled vehicle, such as our SPYD3Rs, with just the regular drivers license.... and NO ADDITIONAL FEES.... but shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone, if they realize this, they surely will add a fee....

Under national reciprocity laws you should be legal because you are not a resident of the state that requires MC endorsement but are resident of one that does not.

I have always ( and still do ) believe that. However, I 'think' ( do not actually know ), Oregon will give you a ticket if riding a M/C here without a helmet. They have signs at the state borders indicating that helmets are req'd.

* And it might be only for actual driving rules, not vehicle equipment rules. Such as, here in Oregon I can make a left turn on a red lite if turning onto a 1-way street. Not many states allow that. You can make that legal left turn from a 1-way street or 2-way street.

Well our local paper elaborated with more information, the MC license is not required if the vehicle ! has a steering wheel, no straddle seating and side by side seating. So looks like the "SlingShot" folks influenced this new law, good marketing tool.

That’s what I read also. Polaris has been getting the licensing laws changed around the country for the Slingshot.

Might want to carry your helmet with you

You might want to carry your helmet with you though, For example I have a lot of friends that ride the dragon in TN, and TN is a helmet state. From experience as a first responder the wife and I wont ride without them. I understand that people don't like the mandate thing but this is one thing i feel strongly about and of course I wish everyone would wear one. I like to keep all my body parts where they belongpps:

I really can’t think of anything more dangerous than a seat belt on a motorcycle :yikes: ... well maybe a rope around your neck would be more dangerous but just ...

Here in Ohio we still have to get or already have a motorcycle endorsement on our operators license. There isn't a helmet law but newbies (first year riders) and kids under 18 have to wear them. That reciprosity thing only applies to licensing requirements but you'll still have to wear a helmet in helmet law states. So if you're on a long interstate trip it would be advisable to bring one along just in case.

Georgia did the same thing , to cover the Slingshots and Elios (should they ever happen), terming them Auto-cycles: w/ steering wheels, pedals and side by side seating.
