Lost Key/Easy Frunk Opening

This sounds like a good plan. Where is a good place to hide a key on my 2012 Spyder RT Limited?

If I was to carry a spare key with me and thus it had to be kept on the Spyder, I think I would get a non-starting key made (no chip)
to open the frunk and keep the spare all singing - all dancing chipped key in either the tool kit or the operators manual envelope. (Or somewhere secret behind the
frunk liner.)
The key with no chip could be kept on the same ring as my house keys as it is just a key and not susceptible to any more damage than a normal
house key. Does that make sense??

Makes perfect sense to me.

First clue your dealer is a total idiot. They sell Spyders and aren't familiar with the security features built into the key and the Spyder?

New Info

So I called them today and they were able to make a mold of the key then keyed it to a new DESS Module and said they will have my ride back together tomorrow. Gonna cost me $200 but iget two keys. Wish it were less but it is what it is.

the one thing I left off cuz it sounded like an excuse is I teach AFJROTC and my Spyder key is on my work set so when I ride the bike I remember to take work keys since I normally leave them in truck. Handed my keys to a cadet with the Spydee key on it and got it back twenty minutes later sans Spydee key. Yes retraced but he traveled all over the campus with it so rit is lost for real.
PJust glad they don't have to replace ignition and yes I will be making at least one more clone. This is the first key I have ever lost of any kind in my 35 years of driving and what a horrible first experience it was. Do appreciate all the cross talk and you all taking this journey with me.

Jim

Done

Okay so I picked up the bike today got two new keys and it runs like a champ. Total cost $200 because the dealership cost was $435 but they gave me a discount and only charged me $200. Found an earlier post and I also put a drillhole in both of the new keys , tested them and they both worked. Now they're on a key ring so I can't lose them the way it happened before slipping out of the sleeve. Also they gave me a $50 gift certificate towards parts and accessories on my next purchase so thats even a little bit better discount so it all worked out well. WHEW!!!!!!

Not quite done

Went to drive the bike to work this morning and it was still dark. Pulled out of the garage and was wondering why no lights???? No lows or highs. So I parked it and called the dealer when they open and they said, "the DESS replace we did would never effect the lights the bulbs must be burned out". On lows and highs at the same time.....really????? Taking it back :yikes:first day off isSaturday will se what's up then. :banghead:

High and low beams are the same filiment on the Spyder (except the ST). It is possible they are right, but more likely that they failed to reconnect the lights when they worked on the Spyder.

Ya'll are making this way too complicated! Order Lamonster's IPS Switch and no one but Spyder lovers know where the key is!

Lights work

Went back yesterday they took off the Tupperware and low and behold they had not plugged the lights back together. All is now good with the world. I have drilled a hole in the keys so no more loss issues and am gonna order an IPS today as well. Live and learn or live and don't learn....as long as I live all is good.

I know you seem happy now but what a UNNECESSARY problem. They should have given you two keys to begin with and the whole problem could have been avoided. I am surprised they don't have a check list they go through when delivering a new Spyder to a customer. My dealer had a checklist which they went over with me and then provided a copy to me. My dealer also took the time to explain the operation of the Spyder carefully.

Then when they repair the original problem, they forget to reconnect the lights? They didn't do a walk around to see that everything was in place and worked?

How much downtime, in total, did you experience? In Ohio, loosing a few weeks robs you of the limited amount of time you even have to operate your Spyder because of the seasonal weather. How many times did you end up going back to the dealership? How long did it take you to get them to admit to their errors and correct the problems?

Thank goodness I will never need this dealership to do anything on my Spyder.

Let Me Summarize Your Experience with this Dealership

So last week my ONLY Spyder key got lost. I called the dealer and their first suggestion was to call a locksmith.
The stupidiest advice I have heard. No "knowledgeable" Spyder dealer would have even made this suggestion.

So last week my ONLY Spyder key got lost.
Dealer should have given you 2 keys. No way they don't know better. Completely incompetent staff or they misplaced one of the keys and tried to skate and not acknowledge the problem when they delivered your new Spyder.

Okay 4 business days in and decided to call on progress.
Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE! They created the problem and in 4 days time they couldn't search and contact you back? You had to contact them? WOW! This kind of dealer attitude is disgusting.

Dealer said give them time they would work it out.
Yeah. 4 days later and the Dealer says if you only "give them time" they would work it out. Yep, the dealership was real concerned for you: (1) after 4 days, they hadn't found the key; (2) hadn't called you back with the status, instead you had to call them; and (3) the Dealer wants time to "work it out." "Time to work it out" is code for trying to figure out how to minimize his cost and expense to correct an error the dealership made. He wasn't worried about you - he was worried on how to cut his costs.

The dealer call today they spent yesterday talking with BRP so they are gonna try to make a mold of key, they have to switch out D.E.S.S. module if they can get ignition to turn total cost $400 (little high) they offered to split cost saying they should have given me second key.
What balls this dealership has....they are acting like splitting the cost is doing you a favor. YES unfortunate you lost the ONE key you had, but you still would not be experience the problem if the dealership had done their job. I hate it when someone acts like they are doing me a favor when they created the problem themselves. Don't feel guilty about loosing one key. Your error put in motion the problems that followed, but IT SHOULD NOT HAVE. The incompetent staff of the dealership created this problem.

So I called them today and they were able to make a mold of the key then keyed it to a new DESS Module and said they will have my ride back together tomorrow. Gonna cost me $200 but i get two keys. Wish it were less but it is what it is.
You got ripped off BIG time. Sorry. They might as well held a gun to your head and robbed you.

Okay so I picked up the bike today got two new keys and it runs like a champ. Total cost $200 because the dealership cost was $435 but they gave me a discount and only charged me $200. WHEW!!!!!!
Dealer cost was not $435. They don't pay what they charge you and me. Typical dealer trick -- let's quote book, discount that amount and tell the customer they are getting a deal. Oh.. forget the fact we set this whole problem in motion by being a incompetent dealership.

PLUS, AS YOU ARE ABOUT TO FIND OUT - YOUR "WHEW!!!!!" WAS MISPLACED. MORE PROBLEMS FOR YOU ON THE HORIZON.

Went to drive the bike to work this morning and it was still dark. Pulled out of the garage and was wondering why no lights???? No lows or highs. So I parked it and called the dealer when they open and they said, "the DESS replace we did would never effect the lights
They are correct, I guess. However, an improper repair by an incompetent dealership might have created the problem. Did they ever consider that?

the bulbs must be burned out (said the dealership)
The odds of BOTH bulbs burning out simultaneously is HUGE. Gee... wonder if the dealership improperly repaired your Spyder?

That is my guess to coincidental
LOL. Finally, you are becoming suspect of your dealer and the quality of work of his dealership (which sucked in this instance).

Went back yesterday they took off the Tupperware and low and behold they had not plugged the lights back together.
Nobody who has been reading this THREAD is surprised. The surprise would have been -- THEY HAD PLUGGED THE LIGHTS BACK TOGETHER.

You first wrote about this problem on 08-12-2013, 07:27 PM. In that post, you began by saying --

So last week my ONLY Spyder key got lost.
It is unclear to me when you first contacted the dealer. Numerous errors were created by the dealership from not delivering 2 sets of key; advising you to go to a locksmith; poor repair job; requiring you to share in the cost; etc.

September 1, 2013 -- You posted everything is FINE! Numerous errors were created by the dealership from not delivering 2 sets of key; advising you to go to a locksmith; poor repair job; requiring you to share in the cost; etc.

You are more forgiving of this dealership then I would have been. But if you are happy -- I am happy. I just feel people need a "blow by blow" description of what this dealership put you through because of incompetent employees and poor dealership management.

SPECIAL NOTE: There are many GOOD dealers. Mine for example. I purchased from one dealership and based upon where I live now, use another for service. Both are terrific. I have had an EXCELLENT experience with my 2012 Can-Am Spyer RT-S SM5 and the local dealer network.

You are in San Antonio and I am in Ohio. That should be far enough away that I will never have to visit your dealer.
