Going to be taking my first long distance trip next week. Taking the Spyder from Pensacola FL to Manassas Park VA. Just about 1000 miles. Really looking forward to the trip, any advice is appreciated. :D

Make sure you rest, rest and rest when tired. Also, my daughter lives in Manassas, watch the traffic. It's crazy busy there.

Manassas

I have been living in Manassas Park for the last two months, really crazy after being in Pensacola for 5 years. Can't wait to have my Spyder up here, especially with the weather finally breaking.

Drive safe and check the latest thread on what to pack for distant driving. My son-in-law is a Marine stationed at Quantico. My wife will be there this weekend. Great area!

Well..!!

Ryde safe, easy and rest at fill ups. Walk around a bit relax then tackle the highway with avengeance. Most of all enjoy the ryde. Don't know the plan but pack wisely and light...good luck..!

First and formost have fun then have more fun and when you get tired think of all the fun you just had, that pretty much sais it all. Oh and what the others said.

do it in 24 hours and declare ironbutt status!!!:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Timing makes a big difference.
How long are you planning to take to do the ride.
If it's 2 or 3 days, you should be pretty OK.
If you are planning on hustling up there in one day, read all the posts about doing the Saddle Sore rides.
Bring rain gear, water and granola bars, or snack of your choice.
Make sure you stop every couple of hours.
DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID. If you're tired, stop.
Keep us posted so we know you got there safe.

The wife and I just did our first long trip, 906 mile in 17 hrs. I planned our gas stops around 100 miles and made sure we stretched our legs at each stop. We were riding the interstate the whole way there.

If it was me, I'd make sure I'd find some way to ride through the Smokies, via Blue Ridge Parkway and on up to Va. Take your time and "smell the roses". Find your own "personal time" that you can enjoy the beautiful wonders of this great land.

Little more info

So the plan is to head up through AL, into TN, and run along the western side of VA, plans are to make it a single day trip, but since it is my first time doing a long trip I have built in extra day if I need it. I typically make the drive from FL to NJ in a cage in one day, spend a lot of time behind the wheel, don't usually get tired as long as I am driving.

Really looking forward to the trip!

BRP

Moose;
Mouthpiece says to ride the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY (BRP)... EXCELLENT IDEA  only if you are not strapped for time... max speed limit is 45 mph, and on nice weekends, the traffic can bring it down to 15 mph... however, i've ridden about 300 miles of it, and every mile is more beautiful than the last, and it's just get better with the seasonal changes...
whichever way you go, enjoy the ryde, and keep the rubber side down....

The extra day is a great idea. Remember that riding a motorcycle will beat you up more than driving a car. The wind, sun, and any inclement weather take their tolls. The Spyder itself is less mentally straining than a two wheeler, but takes more physical effort. Both take more effort and alertness than driving a car. Don't count on making the same kind of mileage in a day as when driving. You can do a lot, but keep your wits about you, and quit when your lose your edge. JMHO

I have done a certified saddlesore ride. While it was fun, and I'm glad I got to do it, I would not pass up a chance to do what Mouthpiece suggested or even the route Mr Orange linked.

I did the Saddlesore with three other compatible riders and in great weather. Towards the end my senses and awareness had slowed down quite a bit. Just my opinion, but if you want to ride 1000 miles in 24 hours, I'd really recomend doing it with at least another rider.

if you can make the time, to take your time, then plan a ride to see what you have yet to see. Especially when you can see it from behind the two beautiful front wheels of a Spyder.

BTW..... If you do the BRP, bear in mind what SYD3R said.

Enjoy and be safe! Have a great ride whatever way you go Moosemanj!

I agree completely! I don't think NancysToy could have stated it better! At least that has been my experience. Spyders, motorcycles, and cars are three very different animals. The trick is knowing when to quit. Once you start losing your edge or wits, you are no longer reasoning with the same person. It's almost like two half wits trying to figure out what's best. Again..... I'm only speaking for myself. But then again I'm fully capable of being a half wit even without the long distance riding.

Everyone here has given good advice. Let me add my 2 cents. I haven't been on a trip with the :spyder2: yet, but I have logged many miles on my Harley. The same thing will apply. Drink plenty of water. You are out in the wind and your body is loosing water that needs to be replaced. Muscle cramps are one sign that you should have taken a drink about an hour ago. Trust me on this one.
