• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

lithium batteries

Has anyone installed a lithium battery in an RT. I have a 2011 RTS E5 and would like to go with a lighter more powerful battery if there is one to fit. They are pricy !!!

It will have to be a direct replacement for lead acid. Meaning a LiFePO4. Lithium Iron Phosphate. Standard Li batteries will not work in a 12V system using a stator/alternator as the primary charging system.

dealer recommends...

my dealer tells me a Ballistics 16 cell HD LI/ion 500 cca should work.$329.95. They have installed other Ballistic batteries in various motorcycles. Website_ Ballisticonline.com

Li batteries require an inline regulator be installed to properly charge an Li battery from an automotive charging system. He's most likely talking about LiFePO4 which is a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery.

how long does a lithium battery last? in years compared to a lead acid?

Typically, the life is the result of how you treat it. The regular use of a battery tender can prolong the life by two of three times. With my previous bikes, I never replace a battery. Most had 50,000 or more miles and were four to five years old when traded. One of my Harley friends had almost ten years on his battery and then he died. I don't know if the new owner of the bike had to replace it or not.

Check out the Shorai batteries.

They are lithium iron batteries. They're smaller and lighter than lead acid batteries. I put one in my Honda ST1100 a year before I traded for my Spyder. I got mine from revzillla.

AGM batteries like Optima, Maxxima and Odysses are non-flooded batteries and are relatively inexpensive. Will stay charged without a battery tender for up to two years.

I use Odssey P680 in all of my bikes and am very impressed.

"Is the ODYSSEY ® battery a dry battery?

Because the ODYSSEY battery has no free acid inside,
it is exempted from the requirements of 49 CFR § 173.159
of the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). The battery
also enjoys a “nonspillable” classification and falls under the
International Air Transport Association (IATA) “unrestricted”
air shipment category. These batteries may
be shipped completely worry-free. Supporting documentation
is available."

AGM stands for Adsorbed Glass Mat and it is basically a spiral wound glass mat with lead that has been soaked in sulfuric acid; so strictly it is still a lead acid battery, but strictly speaking its not flooded. It can accept a charge faster and at a higher voltage than a gel cell or flooded lead acid battery and can also discharge more amps faster than a flooded lead acid.. I have seen a lot of hype about Shoraei, but have heard nothing good and at one time I was ready to shell out the big bucks, but after much reading the negatives and bad experiences I decided to stay with the oem battery.
Having said that the life of any battery in a Spyder has to be shorter than in almost any other vehicle because after the switch is turned off and the alternator quits pumping out the amps, the headlights stay on and all the other switched farkles stay on for quite a long time and drain the battery. Therefore unless put on a battery tender, the now partially discharged battery is left to sit until the next time the bike is started and the plates will sulfate more than on vehicles whose entire electrical load is shut down when the key is turned off. I know that is splitting hairs, but carried to an extreme if after shutting the motor down one plays the radio for extended times or leaves the flashers on or uses the frunk and rear top box lights and lights a cigarette from the top box and doesnt shut the hand grip warmers and Gerbings off before shutting off the alternator then surely that battery will sulfate and die sooner than one that is well cared for.
