• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

LIMP Mode - Can you explain?

Do you mean idiot lights like the VSS indicator that was flashing at me most of the time I was ryding the Dragon? It took a little while for me to figure out what that meant, but I didn't pay enough attention to it to slow down any.

The VSS light wasn't limp mode. It was the Vehicle Stability System, lovingly known as "Nanny", kicking in to keep you on your steering line, and not get in over your head. This is what it was designed to do.

:agree:
I don't understand why we need a "limp home" mode either. I guess it's to prevent damage to the Spyder but I can see it more as a liability than an asset.

Lamont, My only "bike" experience prior to my Spyder was a 75 Suzuki GT380 that I used till 85 or so. To your knowledge, does any other machine (bike, boat, car, etc) have this limp-mode as one of it's functions? I personally have never seen it. Bill Gargan

#$%^

Both mine and wifes Spyder went into "limp" because of low battery voltage. Rode about 8 miles at NO MORE than 49mph as the motor cut out above 49mph.

Thank you for your reply.

Bill, when you say 'cut out above 49mph', die the engine completely die, or just not rev or accelerate above 49mph, but continue to run and move you?

Just wondering, do you think the battery was bad, perhaps just not fully charged, or perhaps it was sitting for a while, or was aged?

thank you.

My 03 Sea Doo (185 HP Supercharged) had it and my 08 255HP (Supercharged with external intercooler) has it also!

I think limp mode activates when Nanny, or one of her sensors, has been compromised in some way. The brake light circuit probably lets Nanny know brakes have been applied, so a diminishing of current triggers limp mode. As well as engine protection, I think it likely that BRP does not want us operating at higher speed without Nanny's stability control, with the idea of protecting the rider. Whether it does or not is open to question.

:dontknow: Hmm... heavy traffic...freeway...idiots with phones....no serious corners for 700 miles.....vs risk of lifting a wheel in a corner...:(

So, do you opine that the limp-mode concept is a BRP thing?

The opinions so far seem to imply safety is compromised. What safety issues would it protect in your boats?

I had a 2003 or 2004 SeaDoo Sportster 4-tec and I don't remember it being mentioned or ever happening in it. Were yours sportboats or PWCs?

Sorry Scotty, I should have copied the portion of Baja Ron's post I was referring to where he stated he would rather have idiot lights than the limp mode. I know that it was "Nanny" kicking in and trying to help me not get in trouble. Well that along with the traction control j-braking the engine. :)

 There is very little that beats a good, hard ride.

I have it on my BRP 4 -Tech Engines. Never happened to me!
Could happen with overheating or abnormal oil pressure Etc. which I would welcome on a jet-ski because you ,make it back to your launch instead of being towed in by a Yamaha? LOL
I take Great care in Maintaining and Breaking in my BRP toys and they always perform great for me. BRP (Rotax) engines generally need more care and maintenance than some other brands because they always have a Greater Power to weight ratio than the competition!

Yeah, when you take any engine to the limits it tends to get a bit persnickety.

I find it interesting the different opinions of the Rotax. A co-worker told me that he considered the Rotax bulletproof. He said keep up with scheduled maintenance and it would last longer than any engine he knew of.:dontknow:

I go into limp mode after watching Jessica Simpson do toe-touches in a bikini.:joke::joke:

Seriously..Ours went into limp mode when we were in LA and parked at a dealer doing the poker run. They cleared the puter, and sent us on our way.

After we got home, we discovered it was the relays. Replaced them and all is well.
