license plate bolt holes cracked

Hey guys, just cleaning up my Spyder after the trip to/from Magog Spyderfest and noticed the bolt holes on my license plate are cracked.

I have some good miles on my Spyder now, and we have more then our share of bumpy roads around here, so I would guess the plate gets jolted around a good bit.

The Fix: I have the plate off now and was thinking of using JB weld or something to help keep it together, along with installing some rubber washers. Perhaps that will prolong the plate life a little more???:dontknow:

Any other thoughts/comments on keeping my plate together? I've seen other posts where ryders have removed the rear fender and re-located the plate, I do not wish to go that route.

Any thoughts/comments on a fix would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I had the same thing happen on wifes bike. Repaired with a super glue, used it a couple of months with no problem, then changed over to a different vanity plate. No problems with the new plate so far.

Would suggest putting a metal plate behind with rubber washers at front and back of holes,, less vibration should keep things intact. Best rubber washers I found were from the old galvanised roofing nails, they are curved on the inside so when you tighten the bolt you have a spring type tension on the inside.

Be sure you secure the bottom of the plate (or new reinforcement) with the 3M Dual-Locks that BRP provides with the RS. The method of attachment is described in the Owners Guide.

Don't bother, I lost few days ago in NY my 6-th plate...:gaah:

+The lightest-weight solution for all is a plate-sized sheet of thin plexi, not billet, etc. You protect the plate from loss due to vibratory cracking, and you reduce the tendency to crack elsewhere on the rear due to the light weight of your solution.

The billet plate from BRP don't weigh anything. The plate slides into a slot held by 4 pinch screws.

I appreciate the posts guys. I went yesterday to find a plate frame, but found only ones for cars. I'm not interested in the over priced billet frame. I've since picked up some rubber washers, used JB weld on the backside of the plate, and clear glue on the front side of the plates to help prevent further cracking. I've also used some of that sticky form type adhesive to stick the plate near the bottom of the fender.

Only time will tell if it lasts a little while longer.

Thank you for the suggestions and replies, everyone.

Keep an eye on ebay. I got my billet plates for $50.00 shipped each.

tag roullette

+When I lost my first RAKNID tag, I backtracked the 45-mile route to no avail. To get back from the shop, I'd created the cardboard tag, and then supplanted it with an imaged print tag, until I received another issued number pending vanity update. (What a pain.)

I lost my plate in Missouri, backtracked and searched the couple mile stretch of expressway where I knew it fell off and never found it. I continued on with no plate to California, rode around LA for two days then rode back to Michigan. No police officer even looked twice at me and I was never pulled over to have to explain what happened to my plate.

That's cool, lucky I would say, nice  on not getting pulled over.

I checked my JB and rubber washer install yesterday after 320km and all seems well so far. I do know that I will likely have to replace the plate at some point in the future though... will just keep an eye out for it.

Cheers.

At 26K miles I am on plate #4..... on plate #3 I was sure I wasn't going to lose it.... now it's somewhere along I-70 in Eastern Colorado or Kansas. :gaah:
We were pulled over while in TN because we didn't have our plate (see above). We didn't get a ticket but he did check the paper registration.
