• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Lane Splitting

Here on are freeways, Caltrans has posted an electronic message asking people to be aware of motorcycles which I personally appreciate. But the message has not been received well by most drivers. The real issue I think is lane splitting which happens often and is legal here. I can't do it on my spyder and don't think I would if I could because of the safety issue. I've had friends who ride air cooled bikes say they do it in stop and go traffic because they will over heat if they don't keep moving. I admit that sometimes I see it and it pisses me off. Where it maybe necessary sometimes I would never say it was a safe move. What are your thoughts?

It's illegal in almost every state, But i have to admit I've done it a few times in my younger days. Most moves on a bike can be considered dangerous. You have to under stand most people will get PISSED at you if you get in front of them in traffic.
And it doesnt matter if you get in front with a bike or a car.

THAT'S THE START OF ROAD RAGE.

road rage... yep, i can see it already

:agree:

well, we all know about opinions, but whatever...

I've ridden in CA for 30 years. I've split lanes on occasion -- only when traffic is stopped or damn close to it, or at traffic lights ( behind the CHP cycles!!)

Anything other than that is crazy. I must say I don't miss it on the Spyder EXCEPT when I'm sitting in back-up traffic that I usually would just ride through.

Cagers are pissed at motorcyclists anyway -- we're having way too much fun.

I lived out there in the '90s. When I first got there, I saw a bike splitting and thought to myself "what a dumba$$".

As he went by me, I noticed that it was a CHIP. :D

.

I personally feel that spliting lanes is dumb, stupid and dangerous. Not saying that I have doen some dumb supid and dangerous things, I HAVE..
Whether it is legal or illegal doesn't in my mind make it ok.. What happens if a cager opens his car door for whatever reason? Kaboom.

I forget the details, but isn't lane splitting supposed to be done at a low speed?

Yep, and I have seen them doing a slow speed of 70 mph plus in afternoon congested traffic. Over 40 years on 2 wheels, now on a Spyder and I have yet to go between cars, even when they are stopped. I don't think its safe or friendly to others. The 5 minutes (and that's giving it a lot of saving time) isn't worth the risk.
Just remembered...about 2 weeks ago a CHP officer passed me up, splitting my Spyder and a car...over 60 mph on I-15 CA North.

I too saw the message signs and was extremely happy about it.

I have little problems with lane splitting, I've been known to do it on a two wheeler, and now and again I've been able to do it to a small extent on the Spyder.

My problem with lane splitting are the idiots that do it when the traffic is actually moving at any speed over 25MPH and they are doing it at unsafe speeds. So dumb.

I hope they don't make it illegal here though because most people do it very safely.

My mom said the same thing to me about lane splitting and I'm sorry, but I have NEVER saw anyone open their door while sitting in traffic on the freeway, I think the chance is near zero.

not a good idea

:agree: I have too.

My sarcastic observation is; " Evolution in Action ".

At slow speeds, I have seen people open their doors and dump water and drinks - but there is always the ever popular quick lane change to get in a lane that is moving faster or to get over for an upcoming Exit to avoid backed-up traffic.

"Laws" like this seem to breed a feeling in less cautious people that they are entitled to do it - whether the conditions or situation warrants it or not.
