Lame USPS - sending my items on a nice long road trip!

So ... Last Tuesday (10/22) I placed an order thru Slingmods for a few items. On 10/23, I was notified that they were shipped via USPS ground Advantage, with a delivery date of 10/28. Moorpark, CA > Stoughton, WI is 2000 miles. On 10/26, USPS Informed Delivery showed that my items had arrived in Anchorage, AK !! Moorpark, CA > Anchorage, AK is 3400 miles. On 10/27, Informed Delivery showed that my package had departed Anchorage. Anchorage > Stoughton, WI is also 3400 miles. Past orders from Slingmods had arrived in usual five day time frame. Looks like my items are on a nice long road trip :( :)

Another sign of the times. I am noticing more and more delivery glitches with USPS, UPS, Fed EX, and even Amazon. Omaha totally lost a meat shipment and they quickly replaced it with a new one.

It is the little inconveniences that drive us nuts sometimes.

Anchorage is a very busy hub, but it is interesting it would go through there on the way to Stoughton WI. That's a lot of extra AV gas. :gaah:

Somehow, I think it got a little help via airplane. 3400 miles in three days via ground is a lot of miles. We'll see when it gets local, if it got an airplane ride from Anchorage ??

Oh! You have no idea!

I shipped an $800+ Arai helmet to a customer. There was an unoccupied home next to his that was under construction and UPS left it on the porch. No one ever saw it again.

I sent a Sway Bar kit to Australia. The customer e-mailed a few weeks later to ask where it was. I found that it was sitting in customs in Chili! The USPS said they would take care of it. It went from Chili to Austria. I think they get so much mail that is supposed to go to Australia that they sent it on after a fair amount of time. From there it went to Japan, for some unknown reason. Where is rested for several more months. It finally arrived to the recipient in Australia almost 1 year to the day after I shipped it. He had an amazing attitude. He said that next time he wanted to see the world, he would just buy postage from the USPS and ship himself to Australia!

I order a lot of hardware and repair parts. About once a month one of the USPS deliveries is signed for in some city 500 to 1,000 or more miles away. It is no secret. The USPS tracking system says where it was delivered, and the address will look nothing like mine....... not even the right state. One of the deliveries was returned to the shipper because the receptionist at the place they tried to deliver it, refused the package. They were trying to make somebody in Louisana sign for the package supposed to go to Florida.

Most of the time the order cost and shipping is refunded, but then, I am still 2 more weeks behind and often have to spend hours looking for another supplier.

Before covid, I was working in a laptop repair depot, I shipped a laptop back to a guy in Dallas TX via UPS overnight, it made it to Dallas, was on the truck, back to UPS and shipped to Montreal Canada, then back to Dallas TX, out for delivery, back to the UPS terminal then to Montreal 5 times! it had more frequent flyer miles that most traveling salesmen.
I finally called UPS custservice to get this straightened out.

I had something similar happen with a package, although it wasn't the fault of USPS.

The address on the package was correct, except the shipper flipped a couple of digits in the Zip Code, so it was shipped to a small, middle of nowhere post office.
That post office sent it back to their local distribution center, which sent it back to that post office again. I had the tracking number, so watched the back and forth happen several times.

I finally went to my local post office with the tracking number and talked to them about it.
They looked it up on their computer, said they'd take care of it for me, and the packaged arrived a few days later.

UPS has lost a 90+ lb electric motor on my company twice and destroyed one also. I cant imagine how you loose something in a 16x 20 inch box with that weight. We even got a video from a customer where UPS driver asked the receptionist to help him get box out of truck. LOL Box looked like it had been kicked out of the truck at 40 mph;

They didn't lose it. They just didn't want to deal with it. 90 lbs! No wonder they kicked it out the back at 40 mph!

Had a customer in Sweden. His Swift Code (their name for Zip Code) was the same as one in Oregon. Though an International label is completely different from a domestic label. Not to mention the destination information clearly displayed. You guessed it. They sent this package to Oregon. The location was so remote that the small post office did not make deliveries. Instead, they emailed the recipients that they had a package ready to pick up. You guessed it again. They emailed our customer in Sweden that they could come pick up their package. You can imagine this created quite a bit of concern for this customer.

A good example of "Building back better"!:ohyea:

My thoughts on this subject are not allowed here. A wise decision on the moderator's part. Though it is true that these kinds of things have been around for awhile (I started shipping frequently in 1998). Things have gotten much more expensive and service has deteriorated noticeably since Covid in 2020.

It's now day 3 since my package departed the Anchorage, Alaska USPS. If it is truly traveling via ground, I don't expect any updates until at least Friday. 3400 miles via ground in a USPS mail semi will be slow travel. I'll contact my local USPS office today to see if they can shed any light to location.

Somewhere in Egypt there is legendary city where all the lost packages are shipped to. I will not name the city, but I know it is there, because the lost luggage the airlines are responsible for also go there. Once it goes to that place, none of the packages, suitcases, or letters are ever seen again.

Well ... I just learned that the approx. ground shipping time from Anchorage, AK > Madison, WI is 16 days. Reason being that items are separated into specific zone containers, and those containers aren't shipped until either enough contents warrant shipping or time allotted for shipping comes up. I may not see my items until approx. Nov 10th. Sheeesh

** Arrived in Seattle today. That only took six days :( **

I had a high school classmate that passed away and was cremated while away from home. His cremans were shipped home via USPS to his wife in Pennsylvania. They never arrived and USPS can't find them or give her any information. He died in February 2022. True story.

When we moved from Alaska to Arkansas in May/2019 our goods were promptly picked up by the mover on 5/10/19. They left Alaska and headed to Arkansas. A week later they were dropped off at a warehouse in Montana. They sat there until July. The household goods and my three motorcycles arrived the third week in July. We had to buy three rooms of furniture just to live in our new house. And the move only cost us $12K.

My sister and brother-in-law are in the process of moving from Southern California to Northern Texas.
The people who ended up buying their old house, also asked about buying some of their furniture.
After negotiations, she said they basically sold everything to the new buyers, and are only moving a few things to Texas.

Even before she told me that I had always considered her to be the smartest of my siblings.

We tried that route. No dice. We ended up giving away all the furniture we decided not to bring with us. Linda's son was a very happy camper.

Now: back to the thread.

Thought I'd add a second USPS mailing debacle. Back on Oct. 01, I requested some leather samples from Corbin seats. After a couple weeks of not receiving, I made another request. Those samples arrived within 10 days. Since then, I went with Russell Day Long. Well, today according to USPS Informed Delivery, my original sample requests are out for delivery today. The samples were sent out on Oct. 02 and arrived in NYC (??) on Dec. 28. They left NYC on Jan. 04. They are now at my local PO and out for delivery. Weird...

Recent order, did a tail spin. It arrived in Apache Junction, headed off to Queen Creek, then back to Phoenix to start again to Apache Junction and on to Gold Canyon. This is the second time I have seen this happen recently. USPS postage is for storage, not delivery.
