• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Are Can-Am keys "programmed"? Is there anything inside the key head with the Can-Am logo on it? Can I drill a hole to put a ring on the keys?:f_spider:

keys

yes they are programed, no you can not drill them unless you want to buy new keys.

Yes, they are programmed. There is a chip inside the key.

Yes, people do drill them all the time so they can be put on a key ring. There are a couple threads showing where to drill and be safe (not ruining your key). Give the search function a try.

Yes they have a chip or something in them. I am not sure if drilling would hurt them but I don't think I would. I have a holder that the key goes into and it has a ring on the other end.

The key has a transponder chip inside it, which the Spyder is programmed to. There was a thread on here where somebody did show where to drill if you wanted to put it on a key ring, but I wouldn't suggest it. The keys should have come with little sleeves that you can put on the key ring. Considering the bouncing and such that you do while riding, and the fact that it's not enclosed... If the ring breaks, there's no floor to catch loose keys.... I prefer to keep the key in the sleeve, and my keyring in my pocket, or in the trunk while riding...

My wife was going to just this (drill hole in key). Luckily she called the dealer and the salesman said in no uncertain terms, "DON"T YOU DO THAT", there is chip in the key and if you damage it, your Spyder will not start. .

Yeah..!!

They are programmed and not wise to drill holes in them. They have sheaths, oem, and there are some key holders to make it possible to put on key ring. Check the threads here, remember a bmw holder that works..good luck..

DO NOT DRILL a HOLE :lecturef_smilie:
What I did with my spare key I put in my back trunk and got a generic key made that will open your back trunk and turn your :spyder2: on but won't start.Take that key and put it on one of those climbers locking hooks and secure it under the :spyder2: on the frame as there is a hole to put it right under your foot rests. This is to save you a peace of mine that if you are on a trip and lose one key then you have the spare in your trunk...

If your gonna drill a hole the size of a 38 cal. don't do it... That said many people drilled a hole [small] at the very top of the black plastic part with no damage to the chip......

I personally wouldn't drill mine.... I don't feel the need to. But if I did; I'd put that hole dead-center up at the very top edge of the key, and just inside that raised lip.
As you can see from Lamont's pictures; the chip is pretty-much centered, and you'll have room above it.

Plastic sleeve

I use the plastic sleeve and it works very well for me. You get 2 with every new :spyder2:.

Now if you have to have a key with a hole, a cloneable key can be purchased on the internet and a local locksmith with a cloning machine can cut and clone it. This gives you an extra spare as well.

As you can see I have not got it cut and cloned yet my locksmith is on vacation. My intent is to use the cloned key as a emergency spare.
