• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Keyless trunk opener

Neez

New member
I wanted to install a keyless means of opening the trunk, as some others have done, lest I manage to lock my key inside. I don't care for just running a piece of picture hanging wire past the fusebox hole to the proximity of the RH cover with the 3 Dzus fasteners. I used the same routing, but I wanted something that looked like it belonged there ( even if only I see it). I found an old manual choke conversion kit left over from the days when cars had carburettors, and a length of 1\4 inch ID clear plastic tubing. I cut the sheath to length and the inner wire a bit longer.I slid the wire into the sheath and the sheath fit neatly inside the tubing. I don't know if the tubing is really necessary, but it looks good and will prevent electrical shorts. The inner operating wire comes with a neat little stopper which is tightened on to the wire, leaving clearance so that it does not interfere with normal key latch operation. I attached my cable in place with plastic Ty- raps to the existing cable and to the tubular frame piece just above the "dzus panel". This is where the plastic pull knob is located. I tested by pulling the knob several times, each time getting a satisfying click as the latch spring ( we all have installed these, right?) opened the trunk. I also made very sure that the normal key operation is not interferred with.

Do you have pics?

I considered a choke cable, but in the end I just used naked aircraft cable inside the plastic tube itself. Works great. A cable stop clamped on the business end, and a double sleeve on the other to form a loop. Works slicker than wet leaves on a smooth manhole cover.

Here's another alernative

Door lock / Trunk latch actuator found at any car alarm or sound installer...and a momentary contact switch. Switch is tucked in the air cowl....

Big Arm had a great mod for his trunk.:2thumbs:

I mounted one on a year ago, along with a solonoid from a car door opener. Just hit the button on the dash.........bingo...it opens. Nice thing about it is, I can now open the trunk when wifey come out and want to ride along, .......I don't have to shut the spydee off to open the trunk, so she can put her purse in it. I even have 20 to 30 seconds after power is shut off, to pop the trunk lid if I need to. (Don't even have $20. invested in the whole set up.) :ohyea:

What happens if you lock your key in the truck and do not realize it until a few minutes later? I am thinking a hidden always hot switch might be a safer way to go?

I think there was a post on getting into your trunk if you happened to lock your key in there. Something about removing the "pinned" panel and pulling on the latch cable?

Yes and it works great. I was very happy that someone had already posted that technique, when I had to use that method, way out in the middle of the desert.

The first post of this thread deals with getting into the trunk, in case you happened to lock the key in the trunk. (Easily done by having the trunk open, have your key in your jacket pocket, and putting the jacket in trunk, then shut the lid.) :gaah: One of the first post on this subject was posted last Sept by BRPjunkie.
