• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Just WONDERING WHY ????????

So we have made up names and made up pictures (avatar). that doesn't bother anyone. But not posting a location does?

If I used my REAL name; the Witness Protection Agents would just get soooo... testy!
So to REALLY mess with them; I just use the real Town! :roflblack:

With all the recent press about ISIS finding service members and their families through social media I would expect people to have a bit more understanding for those wanting to remain anonymous or at least somewhat.

The Department of Defense even sent out a memo encouraging service members to 'sanitize' their online presence a few months ago.

Cause it's nice to know who you are responding to with everyone's made up name and no location. I might as well pretend I'm talking to an undisclosed ISIS member or a fence post. Why do you have a problem with disclosure. Are you related to Hillary Clinton?

I am all for using your real name and at least your town and state. Stand up and be counted and stop being a worm in a worm hole!
:joke:

Jack

Just because someone puts a city and state doesn't mean that is where they are from . . . proves nothing

Believe me all ISIS has to do is post agents outside any gate to any military installation and they can find out who is a GI and who isn't. GIs wear their uniforms to and from work. They are not allowed to carry weapons while in uniform or on a military installation. So sanitizing their social media really isn't going to protect us much.

This Post is In Code......

Not really.
I don't worry about it too much. You steal my identity, you steal my debts. Right?
I wish.

If they live in a small town perhaps they are afraid someone might steal their Spyder. It is nice to see where other Spyderlovers are from, but they can put any name and state they want. How about "Nowhere, Colorado"? I'm just sayin'!

I agree that there are other ways to do it, but I think the DOD's point was to make it just a little bit more difficult by taking away their current method and making them do something else. Also, as a vet you are familiar with the fact that the DOD has to give instructions to the lowest common denominator in a uniform. While there are plenty or service members who post little to no personally identifying information on the internet, there are also a bunch of people who have their every waking move cataloged on the web. I think it's those people they are worried about. Regardless of wheteher one way is easier than another, ISIS did use social media to track down several service members and their families. That much was released to open source media so there may be more to the story that we are not being told.

If you guys recall there was a thread started several months ago that suggested it would be nice if we "standardized" the format of location info on our data info to make it easier to sort and therefore locate nearby members. I took that opportunity to comply with the suggested format.... guess I'm in the minority. Oh well.:opps:

I am just wondering why someone, when placing their information on the forum
this one or any forum for that matter, would put their location as.... USA ?

I am just wondering why someone, when placing their information on the forum
this one or any forum for that matter, would post anything but general information. A phone number or email address is the worst.

Here is how google works. They have software called google bots. Those bots constantly scan every web site on the planet and read every letter of text. That is why google has such a great search engine.

Other people have bots. Those bots also scan every site on the planet. Some of the bots look for particular things like ten numbers in a row or ten numbers separated by two dashes. For example. 0000000000 or 000-000-0000.

Then again some bots look for the @ sign. Ever wonder why you get so much email spam even if you never signed up for it? If you ever posted your email address on any forum ever... guess what... a bot has your email address.

That is why you should never post those two pieces of information. If you feel you have to, do it like this: One Two Three dash Four Five Six dash Seven Eight Nine Zero.

For email use: myuserid AT domain DOT com

Now before you think I should wear a tinfoil hat, I must say that I have been a Computer Network Security guy for over 20 years. Here is a picture of my inbound Spam filter taken 5 minutes ago:

,Tex was born and raised about 65 miles east of Tucson in a small town called Wilcox on I-10. There is a small museum there commemorating his singing and movie career. Next time you ride through there look it up.

From the private files and little know facts of one Jack Herbst!
