• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Just a question

I do not want to start a new round of bashing but would like to know a couple of things from riders who have experienced the steering binding.

What was the weather conditions Temp and Precip.

What speed were you running.

How many miles into your trip were you.

Thanks

Hi,

I was in TN when it happened - it was very warm out - totally sunny and a little humid.

I wasn't going fast - was on some main road and was just starting to accelerate and curving to the right - going between 35 - 45 mph.

Probably around 9K on the Spyder when it happened. More or less.

It's happen a few times to me,.
Once when i raised the front shocks one noch. Went 20 feet steering bound when trying to turn left.
Once my battery was low, I was stoped at a light the power steering cut out till i got the RPMs up.[my bad]
And a few times going around a jug handle at 30-35 mph.
[it's a jersey thing] It happen a few times more but can't remember the details.
[thats a too many hit's in the head thing] :yikes:

When I had...

my steering problem prior to the update. I was 40 miles into a 120 mile day trip. Weather clear, Temperature 80 degrees and was in the north Florida flat lands. 6 weeks of weathering on new asphalt Pavement.

Light breeze... less than 10 mph and bright sunshine.

Hope you find the answer you are looking for... /Ken

for me . . . .

What was the weather conditions Temp and Precip. Clear, dry & 50 degrees F.

What speed were you running. 75 - 80 mph in 5th gear

How many miles into your trip were you. 45 miles

See my posting http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=163132&postcount=1 for more details.

I would add:
  • I did not notice any Error Messages or signs that the Nanny had kicked in. I was 'busy' checking out the road & traffic around me.
  • Since when it happened, I started to decelerate (throttle & brake) - I am not sure of the speed where it "unlocked" - maybe around 55 or 50 mph.
  • My best guess on time is that from when I noticed it was 'locked' to being 'unlocked', it was less than 2 seconds - but time is kind of hard to pin down in conditions like that.
  • My best guess is that I was exerting about 25 - 30 lbs of pressure when it unlocked. Maybe less.

Just kinda curious, the weather question came to mind since once summer was over is when it seemed like this started. The speed question is because my understanding is the DPS should not be assisting above a certain speed. The distance into your trip is because I'm thinking about the state of charge in the battery. Thanks for the replies so far.

Read your last post and my issues defy all that logic. Mine have always been at 75 - 80 mph, first time was probably 75 degrees or so, this last time was mid to upper 30's. The first time was about 20 minutes in, this last time was 5 hr in, probably about hr to an hour and a half after my last fuel stop.

The only constant I have is it shows up when I have been fighting a bad crosswind.

Interesting point, I think others have said the same.

Hi,

I was in TN when it happened - it was very warm out - totally sunny and a little humid.

It was VERY humid in TN that week.... I felt like I was taking a shower without soap. :joke:

When I had the binding occur on mine it was right after being stopped for about 30 minutes after riding about 35 miles to the location. At the time I had less than 10K miles on the ODO and the Spyder was only about 10 months old. It was December 2008 in Northern California.... it was mostly sunny and clear, low humidity, about 65 degrees.

No problems ever with the steering since then. I have 22,300 miles now. I have not had either of the updates. I'm scared to.

Yeah was humid - guess I'm used to it - we get that humidity in CT in the summer so maybe I'm used to it.

Steering Issue

Mine happened when I was going about 60 mph on a straight stretch and then it continued to happen sporadically at slow speeds in the twisties. Don't know if you saw my other post but Carlo at BRP wants to talk to anyone who has this issue. His email is [email protected]. He sent me a case # and had me drop my Spyder off at the dealer. They thought it was fixed but it is not.

I am very impressed with the service at Alcoa Fun Times and the BRP folks.

For me, very dry conditions, about 70 degrees, going about 65 MPH. It got worse the farther I went. The bike had 2400 miles on it. I had the most problems on highways that had slight bends in them. The bike would lock up and cause you to fade out of the lane until you "popped" it out of the lock.

Mine starting sticking in the mountains of Tenn. The weather was hot. Steering stuck at a hard right turn. Had it fixed at Lamont's BBQ by a BRP tech.
