A lot of people were surprised that I showed up for Spyderfest. To be honest, I was one of them. There was a good reason I came. Since we had decided not to take the camping trailer, Nancy had been fretting over the trip to Maggie Valley, and the week beyond, traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. The thought of living for about 10 days out of one saddlebag was starting to worry her. Jennifer's (KJen's) words of encouragement did not seem to help. Nancy told me we should consider adding an RT-622 trailer to the fleet. Len said he had one in Viper Red at Cowtown, but I'd have to come to Spyderfest to fetch it. Suddenly, I found myself on the way to Cuba. Many thanks to Len for providing an additional incentive for attending such a fabulous event. We will not miss it again. Much thanks, also, to Dan for finding time in the busy Cowtown tech schedule to get the trailer prepped and ready. It followed me home!
I have two other trailers that I tow with the RT, the Aspen Sentry pop-up camper, and a motorcycle trailer that I haul a vintage bike on. Both handle nicely, but not as great as the RT-622. The independent suspension on the RT-622 swallows up bumps like a down pillow. I have never hauled an empty trailer under any circumstances, where I couldn't even feel it hit the bumps. Wow! The independent suspension allows an extremely low floor, too. This thing this is a snake crusher, and you have to have long arms to reach the bottom.
Another great fringe benefit is that it really holds the Spyder steady in the curves and the wind. I have been hooking it up just to make the rides these last few windy days less tiring. Lamont said it was almost more of a pleasure to tow the trailer than not. He was right! Best of all, there seems to be little or no loss of fuel mileage when towing this one. My camper loses me 3-5 mpg, while the smaller frontal area of the bike trailer causes a 2-4 mpg loss. So far I have seen absolutely no loss with the RT-222...although there may be a little more loss when it is full. BTW, the new water management system works wekk...I tested that the other night.
The Viper Red combination is absolutely gorgeous! The visibility of the two together on the road is outstanding. I though I got a lot of looks with the Rouge Rocket alone. Pulling the caboose I get twice as many. nojoke If you have an RT, and are considering adding a trailer, I say "Do it!" The RT-622 is huge, as cargo trailers go, handles well, looks sharp, and doesn't seem to kill the gas mileage. What more could you ask?
