It Followed Me Home

A lot of people were surprised that I showed up for Spyderfest. To be honest, I was one of them. There was a good reason I came. Since we had decided not to take the camping trailer, Nancy had been fretting over the trip to Maggie Valley, and the week beyond, traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. The thought of living for about 10 days out of one saddlebag was starting to worry her. Jennifer's (KJen's) words of encouragement did not seem to help. Nancy told me we should consider adding an RT-622 trailer to the fleet. Len said he had one in Viper Red at Cowtown, but I'd have to come to Spyderfest to fetch it. Suddenly, I found myself on the way to Cuba. Many thanks to Len for providing an additional incentive for attending such a fabulous event. We will not miss it again. Much thanks, also, to Dan for finding time in the busy Cowtown tech schedule to get the trailer prepped and ready. It followed me home!

I have two other trailers that I tow with the RT, the Aspen Sentry pop-up camper, and a motorcycle trailer that I haul a vintage bike on. Both handle nicely, but not as great as the RT-622. The independent suspension on the RT-622 swallows up bumps like a down pillow. I have never hauled an empty trailer under any circumstances, where I couldn't even feel it hit the bumps. Wow! The independent suspension allows an extremely low floor, too. This thing this is a snake crusher, and you have to have long arms to reach the bottom. :D Another great fringe benefit is that it really holds the Spyder steady in the curves and the wind. I have been hooking it up just to make the rides these last few windy days less tiring. Lamont said it was almost more of a pleasure to tow the trailer than not. He was right! Best of all, there seems to be little or no loss of fuel mileage when towing this one. My camper loses me 3-5 mpg, while the smaller frontal area of the bike trailer causes a 2-4 mpg loss. So far I have seen absolutely no loss with the RT-222...although there may be a little more loss when it is full. BTW, the new water management system works wekk...I tested that the other night.

The Viper Red combination is absolutely gorgeous! The visibility of the two together on the road is outstanding. I though I got a lot of looks with the Rouge Rocket alone. Pulling the caboose I get twice as many. nojoke If you have an RT, and are considering adding a trailer, I say "Do it!" The RT-622 is huge, as cargo trailers go, handles well, looks sharp, and doesn't seem to kill the gas mileage. What more could you ask?

Looks great Scotty. It was good to see you at Spyderfest. I agree that towing it is a pleasure but I did get lower mileage when it is loaded. Is Nancy riding her Spyder to Maggie Valley or are you going 2 up on the Rocket? Mine has been in storage for the winter and I need to pick it up so I can do my shopping on the Spyder again.

Very nice!! Congrats on the addition! :2thumbs:

Also wanted to say it was a pleasure meeting you and talking to you at SpyderFest :D

We're going two-up on RR. Nancy has started therapy, but has very little movement in her wrist, due to them stealing the tendon there. Not sure when she will be ready to ride again.

I intend to do my grocery shopping on the Spyder, now that I have the trailer. It is as handy as a shirt pocket!

Awesome pics, Scotty..... very sharp looking indeed!! Great comments and observations too... very well said!

:2thumbs:

Looks fantastic!!!

Hope Nancy's hand therapy goes well. You two have had more than your fair share of problems keeping you from ryding these past few years. Hope this year gets you both on the road more!!

THANKS SCOTTY

The 1st night, I seen you come in the side door, told me my 1st bike trip, would be AWSOME and it was. :2thumbs:

Great looking. Enjoyed the info. as I am picking my 622 up next Wed. here in San Diego then buying some nelw camping gear and heading out to enjoy it all. Great to hear it pulls so wel as I have been wondering how it was going to be. Thanks again and best of luck. :congrats::2thumbs:

Nancy's Trailer..gotta luv it

So let's see Scotty..Nancy gets the WHOLE trailer + 1 saddle bag? Just wanted to get that in writing so when you try the 'dang I just have to put these tools/repair kits/extra :spyder2: needs in trailer'....she can wave the NOT happening flag in your face....trailer+1 saddle bag=s MINE!!!!
Really looks sharp.
..hope her hand/wrist heals soon..

Scotty;
It was great to see you again at the 'fest. With your new addition,it sounds like your camping trailer will probably get used as much as mine has.:D
By the way, that is one sharp looking combo!

Congrats

:congrats: on the New Addition, it IS Wonderful!!!

I know I miss Teddys ole RT-622 trailer. I once stated, the :spyder2: gets you attention, no doubt, but adding the matching RT-622 Trailer just ups the Celebrity Status up a notch!:firstplace::bowdown:

BRP did an AWESOME job when they designed this combination together. As you stated, no other trailer on the market can even come close to it. The only thing I wish, is that BRP would make a Camper Option for the trailer. I dont think it would be all that difficult for them to do, and if they did, I Know Teddy would have me get one as soon as they came out!

It was great to actually meet you in person at Cowtown, just wish I had made more time to actually talk with you more:opps: Its hard to keep up with Teddy & also try to manage my own time :roflblack::dontknow: Hopefully we'll get another chance at Maggie Valley

Congrats again on the new addition, and yeah, IT LOOKS FANTASTIC!!! :firstplace:

Nice looking combo, Scotty. Thanks for the review.

A couple weeks ago, I received a call from the Spyder dealer in Medford about a nice couple (Bob and Jewel -- newly weds)
from Grants Pass who were just sealing the deal on a 2011 Viper Red RT-SE5 and trailer.
We've ridden together a couple times now, and Bob's becoming familiar with how the Spyder handles.
Bob mentioned he was a bit concerned about adding the trailer.
I'm sure your review will put his mind at ease.

Hope Nancy's wrist gets better soon. Enjoy your new ryde.:spyder2:

She says she will be glad to share. :roflblack: Actually, one of the handiest things about the trailer is it makes a quick, easy place to stash your riding gear, while you walk around and explore. I doubt we will fill it.

We like the camping trailer, but we are re-evaluating our needs. A tent and an airbed would serve pretty well, too.

Hi Scotty,

Have to say it looks even better in person. It was a pleasure to meet you at SF. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet Nancy. Enjoy Maggie Valley.

John, it was a pleasure to meet you, too. Like everyone else, I missed Nancy on this voyage, too. If you need some pics of that shifter assembly, let me know and I'll try to snap some.

While Spyderfest was in progress, we took a combination business/pleasure trip from Georgia to eastern Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas to call on a few clients. Since it was partially pleasure we rode the bikes. My GL1800 pulled one trailer and my wife's RT had the R622 in tow.

We came home via the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia down to Hwy. 74 in North Carolina. On one leg the RT got 154 miles before her low gas light came on and we looked for a place to fill up. My Gold Wing runs 43-45 mpg but drops under 40 with the trailer. The Spyder usually runs 30-31 but it actually seemed to improve on this trip with the R622 trailer in tow.

Penny ran her bike without putting it in trailer mode as it wasn't loaded up much (my trailer carried the cooler and the extra gasoline) and it almost seemed that the aerodynamics of the Spyder improved with the trailer hooked up. She said the curves seemed to take less effort than running just the bike alone.

I have read that 18 wheelers have more stability in turns with the trailer attached versus running with the tractor only so maybe the same principle applies with the Spyder and factory designed trailer.

We spent the last night of our trip at a Holiday Inn in Sylva, NC and there were seventeen bikes parked under the front entranceway that night. Most were traveling as singles or pairs and it looked like a motorcycle flea market. A 50's Norton, a Triumph, a couple of Gold Wings, A few HD's, a Yamaha, a couple of Suzukis and two Spyders.
