Is RT Hitch Installation Complicated

MidLifeCrisis

Hi all,

Has anyone installed the RT hitch themselves? Dealer quoted me three hours, which seems pretty high. I usually have enough know how to get things done, but generally need some guidence with good instruction manuals, videos, etc. Is this really a three hour job for the dealer? Would that translate to 12 hours for the average Joe?

Thanks,

_________

Edit: I think I found enough instructions, but there are not pics associated with them. Does someone have them to attach? It does seem to be detailed enough to justify three hours, but wondering what everyone else's experience may have been.

3 HRS.

I built my hitch from scratch and it only took about 4 hrs......Mike.......But I wasn't getting paid $85.00 an hour ...:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Installed mine in about an hour. The control module wiring harness is another story.
All you have to do is remove cotter pin from right side of axle. Put a light coat of grease on the pads of the hitch where it slides on the swingarm. Slide it in place (watch out for the brake lines on the right side). Insert hitch bolt through hitch from the left side and through the axle (the axle is hollow) install nut and torque to spec and install cotter pin. Lamont has a video showing this. You may want to check it out.

I bought my trailer from one dealer and the hitch from another then had a third dealer install the hitch. The dealer who sold me the trailer told me the hitch was supposed to be a 1 1/2 hour install. The dealer who was installing the hitch was trying to tell me that he didn't know how much it would cost me for install as they hadn't done one before so I told him that the book said 1 1/2 hours and that was all I would pay for. That was all they charged me for.

The hitch itself is a walk in the park ! As stated the control module is a nightmare in the park. Just be sure after the harness for the module is installed it is entirely concealed and not exposed at all when you look in the wheel well. There are a few post here that the installer took a short cut that resulted in the harness rubbing the rear wheel causing the harness to fail ! I can't say for sure how long it took for me to install the hitch and trailer modual as I installed the CB and XM at the same time but would guess it to be 3-4 hours .

It is complicated but the instructions are peretty good

I did mine myself including the wiring and control module. Took me about two hours.

You pretty much have to dismantle the back end of the Spyder. It can be done by a user and is not a dealer only thing. Just take your time and follow the directions.

Okay, thanks for your replies. That gives me a pretty good idea of what's involved and some of the gotchas.
