Is a warranty that crucial?

New here and wannabe Spyder owner. What do people think about buying a Spyder that is out of warranty? Seriously, I want to hear opinions.

I guess some of the owners of older Spyders didn't purchase the BEST or McGraw extended warranty so buying used might be a crap-shot?

I had a 5 year on my Yamaha Roadliner and it definitely paid for itself... but it was only in the first or 2nd year that I had any problem that had to be covered.

GET THE WARRANTY PERIOD.

it was the best money I have not spent on my spyder.

Can am is still working on things

ALMOST A NEWBIE

I bought mine used and it did have 1 1/2 yrs. left on the warranty....this was in 09...i never had any warranty work done only recall work . and that would be done even now with the warranty expired.....Any advice I would give on this subject would be tainted by the fact that I had/have the dealer from HELL...If you have a good dealer and a good relationship with them you are blessed and the warranty will actually be worth something....If I were you I would ask here about the specific dealer you are planning to do business with and find out if they are competant not all are then get some feedback about them prior to making a decision.....It's very likely people here will be familiar with the dealers in you're area....there aren't that many of them.....PS I love my Spyder and hopefully you will Love you'rs ......Good Luck......Mike....

Yea, I seem to have read about some things that get sort of expensive. Doesn't sound like an extended warranty can be purchased after factory one expires. So maybe I shouldn't be looking at any older bikes?

Like Mike I also had/have the same dealer from hell and my BRP BEST warranty was not honored by my local dealer. If you have a dealer near by that will take care of you and you are not technically inclined to fix complex problems then an extended warranty might be a good idea. The Spyder can be difficult and costly to repair and this is one of the few times (IMHO) that an extended warranty might be a worthwhile option. I would wait until your standard 2 year warranty is about to expire. Then you'll have a better idea if your Spyder is troublesome and if you plan to keep it for the length of time of the extended warranty. I heard that the penalty for waiting is currently being waived.

These are very high tech machines one break down could cost you the price of a warranty. Also I would not buy a used RS because some of these bikes get mistreated pretty bad. just check out some of the U tube videos. If I was going to buy an RS it would be new. And before some of you RS folks jump all over me, yes I know that not all RS ryders are bad. But if you don't know the bike I would think twice. There was a lady who just bought what she was told a Demo bike with 5000 miles on it and it so far has been the bike from hell. Buyer beware. OK you all can unload on me now.

I have never been a big warranty buyer I the past but decided to buy the BRP warranty and have never looked back. Think it was $1,100 for an additional 3 years. Even if you sell early...it will be helpful.

the price of the BEST is cheaper than any serious electrical problem...go figure...piece of mind is worth it...I would always get an extended warranty on a bike like this, esp...

What about a bike that is already out of warranty and best is not available?

Not much you can do besides your homework & hoping for the best

If its already out of warranty, then its a crap shoot. These are computer based machines with many complexities involved. If you yourself are not mechanical in nature, personally, I'd pass on a Spyder (any model) that was already out of warranty. I've experienced a Spyder from Hell and now a Spyder thats total Bliss and you couldn't tell a difference just by looking at them. Initial dealer set-up more often than not (IMHO) is what made the difference between the two experiences for me. Good luck, try to research any potential Spyder the best you can, but without a warranty, its still a gamble.

Warranty?

Relatively speaking, Can Am's Spyder is a new bike, and like anything new, there are bound to be things that need to be tweaked. When you factor in the labor costs alone, the additional warranty is a good idea. IMHO, having a good dealer is KEY. I'm on the opposite coast, but I'm sure my more knowledgeable Spyderhood family can help point you in the right direction!

Going to buck the trend here. I have a 2008 GS SM5. It's out of warranty. I change my oil, filter, air filter and plugs/plug wires. Dealer can do the tires/seals.
No issues.. Nada, zilch.
I haven't heard a lot of issues surrounding this model. RT has throttle body issues around 2010.
Rotax 990 isn't a hard engine to work on.
Do your own maintenance. 1200-1500$ for a 12k is ridiculous.
Save the dealer for BUDS issues and electrical snafu's.
You should be fine without.
If a GS/RS is having problems, odds are its a relay (napa), spark plugs or wires
(bajaron) or a bad electrical connection at the battery or ground. Aside from that, the GS platform is a tank.

Don't want to steal this thread; but, did you contact Carlo on this? Or, maybe the dealer was not an authorized BRP spyder dealer?

pro10is,

Don't take this the wrong way; but, I can't believe you let anybody get over on you. I know some would just let it pass and move on. You don't strike me as one of those people.

Same story for me. RS had 700 miles, supposedly a demo bike. After a couple of strange encounters i went to a different dealership. The transmission filter was so clogged it had imploded on itself. In all likelyhood the six hundred mile service had never been performed, which the original dealership claimed to have completed. They had also sold me a bike that had never had the DPS recalls completed. (sold in Jan 2012, years after the recalls were issued). I found out that i was already halfway through the original warranty period because it had been registered to someone already. I think buyer beware might be a little strong worded, but do your homework for sure. All that said, I absolutely love my ride and only wish I had done it sooner(read-I wish my wife would have said yes sooner).

If your not in a position to purchase a new Spyder IMO, don't hesitate on purchasing a used Spyder because it's out of warranty.

I purchased my Spyder without one and added an aftermarket non-BEST warranty to it and have been very pleased with it. It has paid for itself already.

A lot of good points to ponder. My .02. Get an additional warranty if possible. Get the service history of the Spyder you are buying. If they dealer wont supply you with the service history, run, run, run. It may be someone's troubled machine.

What warranty company?

Look for a used one with a transferable BEST warranty. I took the extra 3 years out on mine mainly for the towing and to have a transferable warrenty to help sell it when the time comes.
