iPod question

Good Question!

I was told by the Dealer that I should have gotten one, being as I purchased the RTS. If I did, I never saw it. My wife also told me I suffer from C.R.S. So I could have put it somewhere and just can't remember.

FYI this video shows a mechanic changing out a Spyder radio due to a failure and is installing a new one and applying the BRP bulletin for water intrusion (basically adding heat shrink at the antenna connection).

This video was published in June 2012.

If you jump to about 14 minutes (end of the video) he quickly states he has to give the customer a new iPod cable because it has changed.
The one he holds up does not have the box on the cable.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Still.....

The only part that confuses me, is the fact that this change came about some time in 2012. How would I know which cord I am suppose to have? To top that off, i have the dealer telling me that the cord with the inline box is the one that replaced the one without. And here I have a video showing me just the opposite. Of course, I will need to know which is the right cord/connector before I go hooking up a $200 ipod...only to be fried because I used the wrong cord. Perplexing dilemma, seeing as the cables are not cross compatible. Hopefully, I can get a definitive answer on which cord I need from my dealer when I stop by this afternoon. Thanks again for all the help!!!

Your dealer is wrong!
Ask any 2013 RTS owner and they will tell you the do not have a box in the iPod cable.

I realize I should read my owners manual but maybe someone here can help me. I have a 2010 RT SE5. When I hook my iPod up in the rear trunk with the Can Am cable my ipod goes into a Bluetooth mode and all I can control one using my Aux setting on my menu is going thru certain albums. How do I get it to use a playlist or just run random. Thanks!

I have mine hooked up to the cable provided. I set my Ipod on shuffle and it plays that way, if I don't like the song I just press the mode switch and it moves to another song. I believe the key is to put the right seating in the POd

Well learning to use an iPod with albums, play lists, artists, etc is another subject!
If you don't have your music organized when you put it on your iPod, the cluster wont help much other than listing all the songs.

Having never been an iPod user before, I learned that the hard way and had to go in and use iTunes to categorize my music and in some cases of old mp3's I had made years ago, I also had to add the missing info like Artist, Album, Genre, etc. Royal pain! But once done WOW does the cluster display make it easy to use your iPod.

Trust you, over the Dealer

Hey Bob, I'm going with my gut...and your recommendations (of course)!!!! Getting ready to go on Amazon to see if I can find one. BRP Store shows that it is "Temporarily Unavailable". Thanks for all the help!! Take care, and I'll talk to you later. Again, thanks for everything!

Which one do you want, the non-box one? If so, PM me. I've got an extra I'll save you money on. It's still got the foam wrap on the ends!

Worst case, if the one with the box does work you may be able to cut it out of the cable and just solder the cable back together.
Roger has a wiring diagram of the 7 PIN din at the trunk.

Of course I could be wrong, but... I don't think that will work. I think I read somewhere that the only real difference between the two cables is the one with a box has the 12 to 5 volt converter in the box, whereas the newer one has the 12 to 5 volt converter in the plug. The iPod section of owner manuals back to 2010 don't show any differences in iPod operations which leads me to believe that functionally the two cables are the same.

Ebay listings, and one apparent Can Am dealer site, list the part number for the cable as 219400346/710002676. I haven't found what the 346 part number refers to. Maybe a part # used when the cable is included with the LTD?

One eBay listing that has a vehicle compatibility chart shows the 2676 cable to be backwards compatible, from 2014 to at least through 2011 RT.

From what I find 710002016 is the part number for the box cable. When I ordered my cable back in November the seller, K & W Cycle, said the iPod integration cable part number had been superseded. I had not given him a number, and he didn't list the previous number, but I believe he was probably referring to the 2016 cable as the one that was superseded by the 2676 cable. Even in November the BRP web site showed the 2676 cable as out of stock, although K & W was able to get it for me.

WasWinger, did you look at the video I posted. The mechanic said the new radio needs the new cable.
I don't think there is anything in the cable on the new radio.
But only way to know for sure is to ohm it out.

I just did. I wonder if he mentioned the new iPod cable simply because it was packaged with the replacement radio. BRP's packaging practices seem a little odd at times.

Here is something interesting. This is from the iPod integration cable description on the Accessories web page on January 27, 2011 that was captured by the Wayback Machine web archiving site. http://web.archive.org/web/20110907...195/219400187/_/iPod†_Integration_Cable

Cable for hooking up an iPod to top cargo's DIN connector
Includes 5V transformer culled from latest-generation iPod
Full-feature handlebar control
DOT-Matrix visual interface
Driver volume control and playlist browser convenience through vehicle's cluster

Here's the description from today's web page.
Description

Spyder RT, ST 2014 and prior

  • Cable for hooking up an iPod (30 pin connector common to Apple devices) to top cargo's DIN connector.
  • Includes 5V transformer.
  • Full-feature handlebar control.
  • DOT-Matrix visual interface
  • Driver volume control and playlist browser convenience through vehicle's cluster
  • An adapter may be required for latest-generation iPod or iPhone
  • Standard on Spyder RT and ST Limited packages
  • Located in the front compartment on Spyder ST
  • Please check compatibility with your dealer.

The only difference in the description is the addition of the bottom 4 lines, the bit in the ( ) in the first line, and a shorter transformer comment. I wonder what they meant by the transformer being culled from latest gen iPod. My thinking is they just bought a transformer bit from some iPod charger maker and stuck it into the box halfway down the cable, and then later developed a transformer chip that fit into the round plug.

According to this the current cable description, which incidentally shows part # 219400346 on the page, not the 710002676 that is the current part number shown in the 2014 RT LTD parts list, is backwards compatible. I suppose the older cable, part # 219400187, might not be forward compatible, but I sure don't know why that would be the case since the iPod interface hasn't changed other than going to the Lightning port for which adapters are available to plug into the older flat 30 pin connector.

Note to anyone looking to buy an iPod cable. Have the parts person look up 710002676 as a repair part for an RTS or RTL, not as the accessory. It looks like BRP has the wrong part number in the accessory catalog and that is why it shows out of stock.

Well on the other hand, i like, as you call it "Icrap", i am able to do most anything i like with either my Ipod, Iphone or Ipad, so i guess i am an "Icrapper" :roflblack::roflblack:

now theres a brain image that will be hard to shake off Joe....:roflblack:

FYI for the non-lighting iPod connector (like the ipod 4th gen and earlier) the ipod/phone actually uses the USB data lines to determine what kind of charger is hooked to it. So it's more than just a 5V regulator in that box in the cable!

This is why you cant use off the shelf 5v chargers (like a Android one) on a iPod/phone since they have no connected data lines. Basically there is a resistor on the data lines that depending on resistance amount tells the iPod/phone how quickly to charge. e.g. how many AMPs the charger is capable off.

So again, more to it than a 5v regulator.

Are you saying that to successfully charge an iPod/iPhone you have to have a charger made to charge an iPod/iPhone? The reason I ask is I just plugged my 80gb click wheel iPod into five different USB power sources, none of them Apple or Apple compatible, 12 volt, wall charger, and PC, and it went into charge mode on all. I know from experience the charger has to have sufficient capacity or the iPod won't charge. I had my Samsung tablet and iPod, both, plugged into a car charger last year and the iPod wouldn't run. There wasn't sufficient charge current available until I unplugged the tablet.

In any case I don't think this has any bearing on whether the old and new iPod cables for the Spyder are interchangeable, does it?

The older iPods will but a 4th gen , iPhone 4 and up won't. I think the iPod 3rd gen won't either but I am not sure.

3rd layer?

Full control seems to be more of a "black magic" than a science.

While riding, you can only switch between songs (short press), or depending on what mode you have set, albums or playlists with the long press.

While stopped, using the mode button, switch over to the ipod, then long press, and you will get a menu where you can select playlists, albums, artists, etc... Where the black magic comes in is that the menu is 3 or 4 layers deep, yet the display only shows 2. So many times I have selected an album, only to find I did it wrong because I didn't move over to the 3rd layer to start the album playing.

BTW... I'm probably not the best source, as I'm not a fan of iCRAP. I only have the iPod for the Spyder. If the Spyder ever goes away, iPod probably will too....

I'm stuck on this problem as well. I want to select album mode and have the iPod start at album <x> and continue down through the list.

Mode to get to the iPod menu.
Long press (don't recall which button) to get into the 'edit' mode.
Down button to get to 'Album'.
Right button to get over to the list of albums.
Down button to get to the album I want to pay.
If I stop here and do nothing, the iPod reverts to random.
I've tried hitting the right button to get to the list of songs on the selected album but I don't believe that did anything either. I could be wrong on this point as I've been mucking about for a couple of weeks trying to get the mojo right.

Is there some kind of 'ok I'm where I want to be no click this and make it so number one' button I should be clicking?

Thanks for the assist.
