Hi,
I just brought a Spyder and I'm trying to get it insured so I can get it on the road, but I'm not sure who to go to.
I have my cars under Plymouth Rock, but they told me that they couldn't find the Spyder in their computer system and wouldn't be able to help out.
Any and all leads will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

GEICO WILL INSURE YOUR SPIDER

I live in MA and insured my Spyder through Commerce Insurance Company in April. My agent had no problem at all. Price was $472, without collision.

I'm in CT.

Geico wanted $1190/yr

Went with Progressive at $384/yr

When I called Geico the rep told me they hadn't figured out how to rate the Spyder, so the insurance rate was skewed as a high risk vehicle. That was April, they may have adjusted it by now.

Thanks, I'm going try Commerce and All State tomorrow morning. Progressive and State Farm also do not write motorcycle policies in Massachusetts

Do a search for threads already posted.

I too live in Mass. Your basicaly screwed.

Geico and Progressive advertise like heck on TV, but don't sell here.
Same for Allstate and many others.

Prices are wildly all over the place.
My own home/car insurance thru Travelers was nearly $1400.
I ended up going with Commerce Insurance thru Fitts Insurance of Framingham. $809 for full coverage 100/300 for all.

In Mass, you get screwed for being a new motorcylce driver for the first 6 years! I have the highest rating (Step 9) on my car. go figure!

This might just not work out for me, I was told that since I was in Boston, that the best rate they could give me was $1,700! That was Plymouth Rock. Commerce quoted me $2,700! This is really crushing my dream. I refuse to pay as more for bike insurance than I pay for car insurance.

MA insurance fun...

Hey, kwizatz-haderah

I insured our Spyder back in April in Western MA with Commerce. Now, as of April 1, I know that the laws regarding competition and rates between companies opened it up a little bit in our state.

At least for reference, here's what my agent (in Pittsfield) sent me:

"Here is the quote for the Cam Am Spyder. Because of the make/model it is not in our rating. I based it on only motorcycle with cost new of $15,000. and it's cc's of 900. This quote was based on the same coverages as your 2000 Suzuki. It's approx $200.00 increase.

Any questions, please let me know.

Geico must have gotten that fixed, I just insured mine last weekend and it's $400 something a year.

Try Marc Fischer at Fischer Insurance. He has connections all over the States and he is kind of specializing in Spyders. He really helped us in Michigan, that is for sure. Here is his number, a phone call never hurt anyone and it just might help you. 877-537-2555. Good Luck

Also, I forgot to mention: In Massachusetts, the price of insurance can very wildly just based on where it's garaged! I live just north of Boston. If I lived in western Mass, the price would definately be alot lower.

Like I said, we get screwed. And THEN they twist the rod up until it hurts!

When I was in Laconia for Bike Week, I talked with the salesman from Allstate. He said they have been trying to get back into Mass market and will very soon. I was shocked when I told him my stories.

I wonder if I rent a P.O.Box in New Hamphire, would I be able to then get my registration and insurance switched to New Hampshire?

Sorry to hear about your insurance issues. I am a State Farm agent in Colorado and have priced out my Spyder at around $480 per year. I am not sure why we arent writing in Mass but would be happy to make a call or two for you to get a second opinion. Keep in mind sometimes the DOI in your state has rules and regs that make it difficult for companies to make it profitable. This is also why premiums vary from state to state as well as zip code to zip code. So dont blame it all on the "mean terrible insurance companies".

Have you considered moving to a different state to accomodate your Spyder?

I have heard of some auto drivers registering their cars in NH, but live in Mass. I dont know how they do it other than using a relative's address in NH as their own. Or would a P.O.Box work the same way?

I was actually kidding when I suggested moving to a different state. I would never recommend working the system by registering your vehicle over the state line. If you were involved in an accident and it got legal it could me messy. I am not an attorney but in my experience people that cut corners that way sometimes immediately appear to be in the wrong when that is found out. If you have a relative there or a weekend cabin where you could sometimes keep the Spyder that would be more legit. I just found out that we have pulled out of Mass completely and thats why you cant get motorcycle insurance from State Farm there. I was very surprised. I guess there are some issues with the DOI there. Again not all companies do business in all states due to state regulatory requirements that the may not want to deal with. Best of luck and let me know if you have other questions. You are always welcome to move to Denver and ride with me in the mountains...then I could insure your Spyder for about $35 a month. Best of luck!!

From my RV experience the only states that I know of that allow you to use a PO box for a domicile are Texas and South Dakota........BTW neither of these states charge property tax on vehicles either.........which is why you see ALOT of Texas and South Dakota Plates on RVs.......don't know if that helps you any.......our spyders will have Texas tags.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. The situation stinks, but I've figured out a way to make this work for me. I just can't have the Spyder garaged in Boston, which stinks because I'll have to travel some, whenever I want to get on it, but the difference between insuring in Boston, verses anywhere else is Mass is $1000 - $1500:cus:
I don't know why garaging in Boston would boost an insurance premium so much, but it does, so I just can't keep the Spyder at home. I have to garage it else where and pick it up to ride...I love living in Boston, but this sucks:banghead:
