Installing Ram ball mount on center bolt

I bought a ram ball mount and bracket from Value Accessories. I had to buy a special set of allen wrenches as every set that I had missed out the 7 mm wrench. Why do they do that?!

Now that I have the correct wrench for the bolt, it will not budge! Does it take an impact wrench to break it free?

He's trying to break loose one of the bolts that hold the handlebars on, so he can replace it with a bolt that has a ram ball on the end of it.

edit: Well I just saw his new post and it is a different product, but he is still trying to break free the same bolt.

You really need a hex bit socket to do this job. The bolts are on really tight with locktite.

They probably used some form of lock-tite thread locker so it wouldn't come loose. I don't know what kind of hex wrench you got, but probably the handle isn't long enough to give you the leverage you need. If so, look for a piece of pipe or something to extend the wrench handle.

You have to remove the original bolt and replace it with a longer bolt and spacer to allow the ram mount to fit.

I was able to get mine with a standard socket handle, but if you use a cheater, make sure the bit stays fully engaged in the bolt to prevent slipping and stripping the head. Be patient and you will be successful. Good luck!

And, don't forget that you will have to use the correct torque on the bolt after you re-install it ....

A T-handle allen works well. You can get better leverage with the T than with a basic allen wrench.

You really need a hex bit socket to do this job. The bolts are on really tight with locktite.

Had the same issue as you, and a normal allen wrench just won't cut it. Here was my adventure:

You can also get the bolt hot using a soldering iron. It doesn't have to be too hot, just hot enough that you can't directly touch it. That's all it takes to melt the loctite.

Thanks for all the responses! I bought a T handle wrench in the 7 mm size, but don't have the strength to break it free. I have connected with the KC Spyder Riders club and will see if someone with better tools is able to assist me. Until then my phone will ride in the top case where I can hear it at least with the Bluetooth.

A T-handle wrench is not going to provide enough torque to break it free, unless you happen to be a former paratrooper :joke:

The best solution has been suggested before; get a 3/8" or 1/2" socket wrench, along with a set of metric sockets AND hex and torx sockets in the common sizes used on a Spyder. You are going to need these anyway if you tackle any projects on the Spyder, including oil changes.

These won't cost much at Harbor Freight, and will be plenty good enough for D-I-Y projects. While there, also get a decent torque wrench if you don't already have one.
