2015 Spyder F3S SE6

I have my Spyder for 5 years now and it has been on a Deltron Battery Tender Jr ever since I bought it (when I am not riding).


Today I went for a ride and stopped for gas, Spyder would not start, did the checks(battery cables, relay, remove key walked away and back) and nothing. I got the trailer and trailered it home. Checked the battery and the numbers were low with and without load.......Strange since the thing is always on tender when not in use. The only thing I could think of was about a month ago I decided to use a battery minder with desulfating instead my good old faithful battery tender. The lights were good/normal showed it was charging and desulfating.



I put it back on the battery tender and in about an hour and a half it turned green. I cranked the Spyder and it fired up. Check the numbers again and they were back to normal.

Any thoughts on what happened/is going on?

5 years is about the normal life of a motorcycle battery. It starts getting weak, replace it before it leaves you somewhere.

When you leave the Spyder on a battery tender all the time, it will usually start although the battery is just about dead. When you drive away and park it for awhile a battery that old will loose its charge and will not start the bike. Go get the battery load tested and be ready to buy a new battery.

Looks like your battery maybe dyeing. The battery tender may show a green light when its not under load but your battery can not perform under load so its time for a new one. Its probably time to replace, anytime you have a 5+ year old battery and it dies on you one time just get another one is what I would do. Good Luck with the Battery.

I agree with Gwolf and Grandpot. You have gotten 5 good years out of your original battery. A battery tender will not keep your battery good forever. I’ll bet if you get it load tested it will show that you need a new battery.

You have a AGM battery on your Spyder?

I still have the original battery in my 2014 and still starts the Spyder.

Have it load tested but I agree with the other comments, you've gotten good service out of a battery that is probably due for replacement.

what's the date code on your battery? You may have had one put in that was on the shelf for a year or so. I barely got 4 years out of mine on my 2015 RTL. It started up fine, went for a 2 mile ride to get gas, turned it off and it never started again. Safe thing to do is replace it at 5 years whether it is still working or not. Better to be safe than stuck.

I load tested it as soon as I got back to the garage and it was not good. I ordered a replacement from Lamonster already.

The fact is ... nothing lasts forever, I don't think you hurt the battery with the " desulfier " if have one of those and it won't overcharge ..... mtc batteries are ratehr small , which limits the number of plates that's in the case. Some batteries are initially charged 100% perfect ... some not really .... you never know until it finally fails ..... 5 years is a decent length of time for a mtc battery, some have gone longer , ..... Just found this out the hard way myself. Had a mower battery that wouldn't start this week. Bought a new charger/tester that said voltage was good and charge was good. What it didn't tell me is what it does under a load which wasn't much! Got a new battery and is started right up.

Got the battery from Lamonster yesterday, set it on the charger over night and installed it this morning. Everything worked great. Only thing I had to do after the install was set the clock.

I see problem solved. All are right on with the advice.

When I lived in Alaska, I changed mine out every three years whether they needed it or not. Did not want to get stranded a hundred miles from help. You know how Murphy's Law will kick in.
