Impressions after DPS replacement

As a brand new rider (only 200 miles so far) how would I know what feels right as far as the steering goes? thanks

Interesting thread

I just had my DPS done, so I feel obligated to throw my hat in the ring. (or shoot my big mouth off)

If anyone remembers, I had a whole lot of difficulty with the steering on my RT initially. Wandering all over the road like Dion. The culprit turned out to be the mis-alignment of the front wheels. After the initial correction, I was very happy.

I had the DPS replaced this morning, but only rode about 15 miles. At speed on the highway, I really didn't notice much difference. I'm pleased to report this, because I was a little concerned that an unintended consequence of the new unit would be a "looser" feel on the highway. The mechanic installing it said one of the differences is that the new unit is always on, whereas the old unit would be turned off above 45 mph. I have no way to confirm this. I'm wondering, however, if there may be some other unintended consequences such as a degraded battery life. Especially when thinking of electrical add-ons, such as heated gear or additional lighting.

After I got off the highway, I noticed slow speed turns seemed easier, but this is subjective since I have no torque measurements.

At a dead stop, I was able to turn the handle bars much easier than before. Someone was making some major noise about this at one point. This may, however be an artifact of the wet roads since it's raining today.

On another note entirely, I've been having some intermittent brake failure notices recently. It turns out the brake fluid was low by about 1/2 ounce. Evidently, merely 1/2 ounce is enough to trigger the brake failure notice.

As always my free advice is worth every penny you pay for it.

I had the DPS replaced today on my 2010 RS and didn't notice any difference
from before, guess everything was ok to begin with. On some of the rutted
asphalt highways around here the bike seems to prefer the back wheel in the
rut and the front wheels on the higher parts or ridges. Have learned that to
pass a vehicle to move into the other lane then accelerate, not to speed up
as I move out because the bike gets a little twitchy as I move over the ridges to the other lane. Maybe nothing to do with the DPS at all since I'm a
para and can't feel my butt. Oh well, love the bike it's great to be back in the
saddle again.

Just another little note on steering. Last 2 days covered 675 miles on lots of switchbacks and mtn passes with lots of wind. Handled much better than the last trip, especially in the wind. A more relaxing trip overall.:doorag::2thumbs:

Still waiting

It has been over two weeks since my dealer sent back a RT DPS unit. I can't believe it takes so long to get a rebuilt unit back. My dealer says that BRP told him that they would only send them when one gets back to them. I would hate to be away from home if mine broke down. Still waiting for a replacement DPS !!!:sour:

Your dealer is misinformed. The units are not rebuilt. They are replacements and they should be next day shipping them. My dealer has done over 15 of them so far and the wait is usually a week.

RT 2010 SE front tires at 18 pounds, rear at 28 pounds, and front springs set at 5 the highest they go. On the SITS rally I knew I would need an oil change so I scheduled it at one of the two dealers who we were to visit. One the final one we visited had only been a dealer for 3 days they told me. It took about 5 and 1/2 hours to change the oil and do the DPS change so we missed Lamont's picnic as a result. It cost me $192 and change to get it done. I was told they had done about 31 of them so far and they believed the replacement parts were rebuilt. They are only alloted 2 hours by BuRP to do the DPS change and I would guess it takes longer than that by what I experienced.

I would say the turning effort is reduced somewhat but in a esses type of turn the second part of the turn seems to really build an increasing effort and tendency toward the ever present understeering. I tapped the brakes to bring balance of the trike forward and mashed the throttle to over come it and I escaped without any major event. Still the same handling as before with less effort is maybe a fix in their eyes but not mine. I filled the BuRP reps ears at the final banquet at Mountain Motorsports and he admitted that the trike was not the best handling especially the RT.

If I had run the Dragon with the the way it handles now after the DPS service I might have turned around and not done the whole trip down to Deal's Gap frankly. I fought it with the trailer on in the high winds all the way back from Nashville to Weston, WV getting as low as 24.6 MPG while trying to keep a reasonable speed up on the interstate. I enjoyed the Dragon ride greatly on the way up out of Deal's Gap and actually may have raised a wheel a bit coming out of one corner in a spirited manner.

Shocks and springs may be the answer and by the way the BuRP rep said the new spring and shock package on the 2011 RT's should fit the 2010 models so that may be an answer which could be cheaper than aftermarket shocks and springs. It would be nice if BuRP would give us at least a price break on them being they chose not to recall something that does not work right new.

I am also going to return down one click on the preload springs on the front to see if that lowers the ride height enough to lessen the wind effect on the trike a bit. Right now it is akin to chasing a ping pong ball around when the wind hits it. I went accross the longest bridge of its type in the western hemisphere in severe crosswinds holding on for dear life and actually counter steering heavily to stay in one lane with the trailer following like some unbelieving satellite gone wild.

I saw negligable major handling and maybe only slight ease of control changes after the DPS recall was done and almost found it more tolerent before the deed was done. My previous RS handled far better and was easier to drive than this RT has ever came close to so far. Bill

I am waiting to have my DPS replaced on my RT but just for your information, after having my alignment done my RT does run 100% better in a strait line and after replacing both the Swaybar & Shocks now handles 100% better as well both in the curves and strait line stability. It also sits a full inch higher in the front end with the Elkas and that doesn't affect the handling even though the center of gravity is higher. I run 22 psi fronts and 28 psi rear.

Had my DPS done today. Rode for about 45 minutes after picking it up. Ride out was into the wind, pretty stiff breeze today. Still fighting the wind. Ride back, downwind, didn't see much diff in handling. Rode city streets making left/right turns. All in all, I didn't see any difference in handling.

BRP DPS Delivery

My DPS unit came in. I just have to wait for an appointment now as my dealer is busy. Just over 2 weeks to get a unit from BRP and not sure if it is new or rebuilt. I will ask when I get it done.

SE clutch and DPS recall

My RT had the clutch and DPS recall completed earlier this week. I noticed that the shifting was smoother, almost seamless between gears. I did not have any issue before but now I have to say it was not a smooth as it is now.

As far as the DPS unit, I did not have any problems with the steering before the recall and now after the replacement unit is in, I can say there is an improvement in the turning. Going in a straight line, I do not notice any change. But I was able to ride most of the way home from the store on the back roads, using on my right hand to steer. It doesn't require as much effort to corner anymore.

Just my observations.

First Long Ride Saturday

We had the first long ride on the RT since the DPS was installed a week ago. Turns were much smoother. I did not spend effort constantly correcting in a turn. Slow speed turning was much easier.

We traveled up MD 15 into PA and around Gettysburg. We did notice some wind buffeting, but the spyder handled well.

The clutch was rebuilt in the summer, but it hung up twice Saturday and did not automatically down shift. I will go back to the dealer to have this checked.

I Dropped mine off at the dealer's yesterday for the DPS replacment and a couple of other issues... I'm losing LOTS of air out of the rear shock, the front trunk lid is mis-aligned and a bit loose, and my left seithc housing wants to twist on the bars even though the bolts holding it in place are tight... (and the morrirs wobble, and I lost my antenna...):yikes: Anyway, it seemed like a good time to get all of this looked after... When the weather co-operates and they get it hammered back together, I'll throw my two cents in about how it steers... (I've got a 55 mile trip back and forth so an opinion is easily formed! :D

Both my control housings have been loose for months...and are getting progressively worse. Dealer got the parts in after several weeks, but I can't have the work done until there is a DPS available...they will not release a Spyder without doing the recall. I thought mybe mine was a fluke, but apparently not. I may have to take it apart and reinforce the housing myself.

DPS updated

The RT-S is my first bike so I had nothing to compare it to. I never had handling issues but had the DPS updated yesterday as recommended. Only rode back home, 30 miles, but it seemed to be more agile. I love this machine! And I'm having the time of my life!

dps replacement

Well I had the original dps in my machine for 11,280 miles and had no problem. I recieved the letter in the mail saying to get it replaced. I called the dealer and told him I was in no hurry and when he had time I would bring it in. 3 weeks later he called and said it was in. So I took it in and guess what 75 mile miles later it shut down and went into vss fault, check dps, limpe home mode. I did the shut down and re-start and all codes went away and things are normal. My question is will it do it again? I called the dealer and he said bring it back. I hope this is not the start of problems like others have had. Has anyone else had this same thing happen to them. I thought the new dps was to make sure this kind of thing would not happen.:helpsmilie:
