I need some help, please

My aim is to put "something" on the back of the Spyder so that when my husband is a passenger there is something behind him. This is the basic premise that I'm starting with. I just want something behind him.

So, I look at my options. The BRP Sport rack and backrest option, bought through my dealer is $419.99 and $264.99 for a total of $684.98. And that's before the labor to put them on my Spyder. That's a lot in my opinion for just a backrest and a rack that is pretty much good for nothing but holding said backrest.

So I look for more options. What about a topcase? I could put a Givi V46 topcase in matt black with a backrest and brake light from Twisted Throttle for a total of $349.50. Ahhh, but we need fitments to mount the topcase. And here is where things get confusing for me.

Sport Tour has a Givi rack SR770 that goes on the Spyder to which the topcase is mounted. But is this solid enough to provide real support? I just don't know. Seems reasonable for $126.00. But how good is it?

Then KewlMetal enters the picture. I know their backrest system is solid, solid, solid. But wow! You need the base rack KD-237, then the Givi Trunk Adapter KD-246, then the Givi E250 Universal quick relase base before you can mount the topcase!! This gets very expensive! Add that all up and it comes to a whopping $832.40 and that's before I pay someone to put it all on the Spyder!!!

So. What would others of you do in my case. I really want a backrest on there. But can't see my way around the BRP system because the rack is so useless. If you were going to mount the Givi V46 topcase on your Spyder, how would you go about doing it??

I will be very appreciative for thoughts on the matter. I am confused now by all this and becoming quite deflated by the whole thing. The easiest thing is to do nothing. Or go with the BRP system which I think is not designed well.

What would you do in my case given that I am paying a dealer to install everything?

If I'm not mistaken, you can buy a Corbin seat/set-up for that. Worst case, you may have to pick up a backrest from ebay for <$100 instead of the $220 or so that Corbin charges.

Should have added that we're quite satisfied with the stock seat. I've sat in the Corbin seat, and I don't have a Corbin butt. Did not like it.

Keep your eyes open on eBay. And check the For Sale by Owner forum on this web site.

You should be able to come up with a back rest and base for around $300. That's what I did! :ohyea:

Okay, here is a bit of a different route. Get the Kewlmetal rear rack and then fabricate a sissy bar like bjt did. You can either buy a padded bag, make some kind of padding for the sissy bar or add the biker's friend bag with back pad on to the rack and he can lean on that. Here is a photo of his sissy bar set up.

I'm pretty sure that RoadKrome has a number of things that could solve your problem, their catalog is on line, but I had to order at a motorcycle accessories dealer. They've got a mount that goes under the edges of the seat that can take a backrest, rack, and topcase. The set up I have, the mount and backrest, ran me about $240.

I purchased a backrest from a co in PA for a total of 515.00. Put it on myself. Wife loves it.:ohyea: She was like your hubby, afraid they would fall off. The Co is on ebay. Wasn't that hard to put on. Good luck on your search.

So! BJT is good with more than just a claw hammer I see! :roflblack:

Or go with the BRP system which I think is not designed well.

There is nothing wrong with the design; just the price. Of course that's JMO. I have had it on for 2 yrs. and have had no problems. The gf feels a bit too comfortable with it; she has dozed off, which I don't like.

It's not that hard to install. The instructions leave a little to be desired.

The RoadKrome is less expensive; I gave mine away. Let me just say that if you need to get to the taillights or battery, you have to take the RoadKrome rack off.

Solved!!!!! Ordered from Sport Demon. D. O. N. E.!!!!!!!

I guess I'm late, but I'll go ahead and post for anyone else that may be looking for a backrest. I went with Mels Monster Garage and have been very happy. It is easily attached or removed when my wife decides to join me. I also think it looks nice.

dasilva has a yellow backrest setup on his shelf i saw it there yesterday and i would bet it's a lot cheaper than that unless that is your dealer and i'm mistaken:joke:

I have a Givi topcase with the backrest mounted on a Ind 7 mount. It worked ok for a while, then it sheared off at one of the tubing bolt holes when my wife leaned back against the backrest. The local Ind 7 dealer refused to back up his product ( a pox on him!). So, I had the tubing rewelded (by a better welder than me) and I fabricated some sturdy metal braces to reinforce the weak points. I tested it rigorously and it's plenty strong now. If I had to do it over I think I would opt for the Kewl Metal design.

KewlMetal is obviously the way to go when cost is not an issue. They offer a quality product, from what I can see from their website. I've seen pictures of a man standing on their base rack. Now, that's strong!

But, cost "is" an issue. We are essentially on a fixed income with both of us retired. My husband practically had a fit when I started listing prices of options off to him. When we saw the RoadKrome backrest and rack, it solves the basic issue of a backrest in one of the least expensive ways and still looks pretty good. I knew about the Mel's Garage backrest. It just doesn't do it for me. To each his own. I don't like the look of the Corbin side bags either. I know I am in a minority there!! I just think they are "too much" in every way. I don't like them. While the Smuggler's trunk looks great! And if I could afford the Corbin topbox, I would have been all over that!!!

Anyway, we have done no more than "afternoon" rydes at this point. If we ever do more, there are still moderately priced options for a strap on bag for the back and side bags. For now, the RoadKrome backrest will serve us just fine.

You also have to remove the BRP backrest if you want to get to the tail lights.......:gaah:

You might want to take a look at this backrest, I have used Ram Mounts for years and this one is a very heavy duty oversized one. I bought one and am currently working on a method of mounting to My ATV which is not a problem and maybe it would be just as simple to mount 1 ½” ball to the rear of the Spyder and Walla a strong backrest that can be remove in literally seconds.

If you already have a luggage carrier it wouldn’t take more that 10 minutes to drill one hole in it and mount the ball, or use one of their 1 1/2 plates they can supply.

And they look pretty good as well. Your can even buy the longer mount and use it as a drivers backrest!
