Hi All,

I am new here and my F3S is on its way.. I had ordered the 66 shield but it is a no go. The dealer recommends the blur ridge but it looks to low to do any good. I am 6-1 and to not want to be beat to death by buffeting. Can anyone recommend a shield that not only looks good but one that actually works?

Anyone with feedback on the Blue Ridge

Mark

The Blue Ridge is the tallest out there right now. No aftermarkets yet, but some are being developed. Got the BR, and I'm 6' . It is a WHOLE lot better than nothing at all. Keeps the wind off of my chest, but my whole head is above the top of the windshield. Not bad when it's warm, but in the cold, FF helmet is a must. Hope this helps.:doorag:

I also have the Blue Ridge and am 6'. I agree with DLewis - it's not too bad. Most or all of my helmet is out of the main airflow, but I do get some spillage beginning with my shoulders. It's enough to remind me that I probably ought to wear my FF helmet or at least something with a full visor to keep that air out of my eyes. I'll most likely keep the BR for use during the warmer months, but will probably look for something taller for next winter.

I wonder if any of the windshield bolt on/clamped on/glued on lips could be added to top of blue ridge to direct air flow higher???

I always wear full face helmet but don't like bobble head riding - this old man's neck just can't take it for very long anymore - usually only an issue when riding at higher highway speeds.

Cal-Sci windshields is either developing one for the F3 or might have something finished. They make a really good product. I had one on one of my Beemers and it was the best windshield I've ever had - perfect fit, no distortion, scientifically designed. I'm a fan.

WAS ABOUT TIME

Someone else posted a picture of a windshield and mounting brackets from MadStad on my other post, Labeled "Blue Ridge Windshield"
Looks taller.
Hope that helps.

The Madstad "sport" clamp-on windshield says it is 10" wide. The blue ridge is about 10.5-11 inches. Wide at top. Wonder if that would work?

Windshields

I have been watching the threads on the windshields very closely. And from these threads I've determined that the Blue Ridge is not tall enough for someone over 6'. The Madstat is looking like a potential windshield for me. I am linking 2 pictures from other threads on the subject. The first below is the Blue Ridge, and the 2nd the Madstat. I don't have the actual measurements from either but it's clear the Madstat is much taller and it's adjustable. I am still trying to find other options as this is not a cheap upgrade, and me being in Northern Canada makes it tough to actually see the item before I buy.

So Far....

The Mastad is the only one that looks tall enough, at least when adjusted that way. They appear to be the first aftermarket manufacturer to have an alternative windshield ready. I'm sure the other makers aren't far behind in getting their own designs out to market.

Did that madstad bolt on using existing windshield, or did you have to modify it?
do you have a stock number? Does it keep airstream off of your. Head?
thanks for your help.

MadStad windshield

The MadStad, bolts on using the screws that are used to hold the rails on the dash. NO additional holes were added to the Spyder.
The Windshield is made in different heights, and with the adjustable system that MadStad uses, the shield can be moved up, down, tilted in or tilted outward, depending how you sit/ride on the Spyder, so it is built so one size or position does not fit all. Sorta a UFit for WindShields.

If so, is it substantially taller? And does it just bolt on with no modification? If so, would you mind telling which madstad unit it is. I'm ready to order.

Thank you in advance

Winglets???

I'm seeing what looks like a pair of small clear acrylic winglets behind the Mastad windshield on each side of the instrument panel. Are these part of the Mastad system or are they something else separate?? Could they be to reduce the turbulence coming around the sides of the instrument cluster?? Their apparent purpose appears to be to deflect air coming behind the windshield. Am I right about this detail??

The original post asks for a " a shield that not only looks good but one that actually works". I would suggest the windshield for an RT. It not only looks good but it actually works. The best part is that it is electrically adjustable while in motion. It keeps the wind off your helmet. It lets you hear the XM radio playing in your helmet. It even keeps the rain off of you as long as you are moving. Best of all, it has an RT under it. It's got three cylinders, six speeds, and a " windshield that actually works " . Please don't assault me for suggesting that you consider an RT. It's only a polite suggestion on an internet forum. That's what forums are for.

Remember : " Live before you die "

I sold my RT for an F3. If you gave me an RT tomorrow, I'd trade it in on a 2nd F3.

I thought this was a F3 thread?

RT Windshield

You bring up an interesting point. As Mastad does custom sizing of their windshields, I don't see why an RT sized windshield couldn't be ordered with their adjustable mounting system. I also traded in my RT-S for an F3S and think that this might be a feasible option!

Width & Height

The Mastad windshield in the picture apparently has enough height to do the job for us six feet and over. It does look a bit narrow, especially at the bottom part. Without having tried one I cannot speak as to how effective it is or how "quiet" the air pocket behind the windshield is. The fact that their brackets allow for adjustment of both the height and the rake of the windshield strongly suggests that the rider can "fine tune" his Mastad to suit himself. As for how the Mastad looks aesthetically with the styling of the F3 is probably a matter of individual taste. Different strokes for different folks.

BUT IF YOU WANT TO REALLY ....SAVE SOME MONEY

F-3 owners, now that Madstadt has come up with " THE BRACKETS " for the F-3 ........Probably any windshield will be able to be used ....I suggest you go to CHRISCHROME.COM and see what they have for Gold Wing 1200 series windshields.......because they were the largest ones made for the Wing or any other bike .......I put one on my 08 GS and attached it to the handle bars ......about 472 sq.in...........they are easily trimmed and can be had for about $175..................just throwin this out to you.....Mike

The Madstad looks practical, but I would have to have a darker screen to maybe make the componentry
holding it in place less visible. I like practical and functional, but visual is also very important to me.
