• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I may have messed up..

Ok, I own a 2008 GS..8,500 miles.
Last night I check the coolant(oil level was checking Sunday after riding and was fine)in preparation for today's America's Parade in NYC. While air temps were cool, and the Spyder ran fine, we stopped after the parade to remove the flags. I then noticed coolant had leaked onto the street. We had some water and added it just below the max level. And i had smelled coolant as we rode up 5th Avenue, but engine temp never rose above 5 bars.
I rode home, stopping once to check the coolant level and the engine temp never went above three bars. No limp mode or operating issues.
When I arrived home I parked the Spyder with no leaking coolant observed 1 1/2 hours later. As well as adding a tiny bit of coolant, maybe an ounce or two, to reach the max level.
Being I had removed the application last night and used I small pen light to see the level, I figure I must NOT have seated the coolant cap properly.
Has anyone experienced the same? I figured if I had a craked coolant tank of line, the coolant would have been gone.
Oil was checked as well with no signs of foam.

Probably just ran out the overflow?..... Remember it expands with heat, so topping it up when hot will show lower when it's cool the next morning.

THIS ISSUE

For the system to operate properly it needs to be sealed ....if the cap wasn't completely tight, I could see what happened ....as happening...............and Yes the cap is easy to not get it on tight.......keep an eye on it for further leaking tho.......Mike

Thanks 109..I kind am leaning to me messing up and not having the cap seated properly last night. That and the fact the temp never was very high after adding the water and making sure I took care putting the cap on, after the parade.

Thanks Mike!

Here's the thing..!!

that radiator cap has two detents when installing. The first click is the safety (if removing when hot avoids the cap flying off and burning you) the second is the seal making the sysytem tight. Not easy access so many catch the first and have leaks in th system. Quick check should do it and your fine...

Of all the vehicles I have owned, the Spyder has the most difficult radiator cap to install correctly. You really need to inspect the installation thoroughly.

I have a good story for you. I took my RS in for service once and they didn't completely reattach the power cable for the fan. It was cold in the morning the next time I rode so I didn't see any problems. As the day warmed up, the Spyder dumped all of the coolant and I was going into limp mode with full heat bars. I stopped at an advanced auto and got coolant and a funnel.

Long story short, I got the fan plugged in all the way and everything was fine. I am fairly certain you will have no problems with the motor from this. My RS ran like a dream for two more years before I traded her in for the F3.

Make sure your plastic reservoir does not have a crack. They are known for this issue on the 2008. Happened to me.

I did a visual inspection of the coolant tank, and it looks okay. And the level never went down in the 25 mile trip home. With no evidence on the garage floor..I'm pretty sure I just screwed up.
Hopefully I will be taking a ride in the next few days to see if there are any issues.
Thanks for the reply

Well...

Seems like I was correct in assuming I messed up. After taking the GS for a 50 minute ryde today, there was no evidence of the coolant tank leaking, nor any drop in coolant level..so..
I messed up when tightening the coolant cap.:opps:

Thanks to all for the input!

The cramped space, small cap and force needed to get it back on the tank properly makes it a more than average difficulty task. Been there done that. If you get the cap cocked or don't get it completely locked in place you'll get coolant spilling out.

You are not alone.... :ohyea:
