Agreed. This one was recently mounted at Seymour Johnson AFB near what was the officers club. Clubs are not segregated anymore, but they (officers) do have their own lounge. The 4Th Fighter Wing originated as an Eagle Squadron, American pilots, with the RAF prior to the US entering WWII. That's the emblem on the nose. I wear a 71 Squadron patch on my vest. The 334th Fighting Eagles, from which I retired, originated as 71 Squadron of the RAF.

The National Stearman flyin happens every labor Day in Galesburg, Il. This year ti is Sept. 3 thru Sept. 8. On the Thurs. after Labor Day they fly over my house on the way to the Geneseo airpark. I always get chills when I look up and see and hear 10 to 12 radial engines flying in formation. There's no sound like it.

I love the Stearmans! I first took a hop in one when I was about 10. There was a guy selling rides at the airport across from the fairgraounds in Holland. We used to go up there every time we could scrape together the $5 fee. Rode our bikes there before we had powered wheels. Rode the mortorcycles there later. The old guy took a liking to us, and gave us far more than out money's worth if it wasn't crowded. I don't remember exactly which model that was...probably a PT-17, but it could have been a PT-13. I don't remember which engine it had.

Just before Nancy and I got married, I was delivering some chemicals to the cropduster at the South Haven airport. I could have taken my flying lessons in a Stearman that summer. I couldn't afford to do that and get married, too, so I guess you know how that turned out. It was OK, though, the owner of the gas station I went to around that time had a Stearman, and we went up frequently. I guess he liked my company. I have also flown in a T-6 trainer. The trainers aren't real warbirds, but they are neat stuff...and every pilot knew them intimately before he went on to bigger and better things.

Glad you liked it. I love flying and I do have a pilots license (small, single engine, FVR only). Just too expensive unless you have a lot of money or a good reason to fly.

old aircraft

Well fella's I rode in a old p.t. 19 trainer, (upside-down 6-cyl. engine) back in the 50's, the neighbor's buy it complete at a army auction, & they had a new wood prop made, & the way we went!!! YIKES , & later on (stupid) I had a reverse prop,made, & turned the engine into a pusher, & made a fantastic snow-mobile!!

My B-17 Bombing Mission

I had the opportunity to fly the B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" last Spring. Sure made me appreciate the 16 bombing missions my dad flew over Germany. His plane was shot down over Hamburg on 13 Dec 43. Three killed, 7 POWs. Dad spent 18 months in Stalag VII-B. "My Hero"

Hot Shots, gotta respect those folks. My ex sister in laws father in law :hun: was a district ranger in Ruidoso NM. We were hunting and flying buddies. He knew that forest better than anybody. He showed me the spot where Smokey was found. He introduced me to the guy with the B17s. I did some volunteer firefighting with the forest service. (When I wasn't working on Phantoms). Have y'all heard of the Confederate Air Force??

The Confederate Air Force got all politically correct several years ago. It's now called The Commemorative Air Force. What a crock!

The "Aluminum Overcast" is the G Model. That was the first one to have the chin turret. My dad's plane was the F-Model.
