I Killed My Battery - left it on a tender... New battery awaiting collection!

After checking the weather I've decided to plug it in and wait a couple of days.

It's currently 28 F, with a high on Thursday of 30 F, and Friday of 35 F.

Saturday is supposed to be mostly sunny and 47 F.

So I think I'll wait until Saturday. :f_spider:

The "Battery Tender JR" is a great little unit.
I have using the same one for twenty years on four different bikes without a problem.
Battery Tender also makes a small tester, that you plug in the same as your charger.
It has red and green lights and tells you the voltage. About $15.

So the battery Tender Junior has been connected to the battery for about three (3) hours, and is still showing a steady red light. Steady red means it's charging.

When it reaches 80% charge on the battery it will start flashing green, and then change to steady green when it's fully charged.

Weather.com says it's currently 28F outside, and a predicted high of 31F on Thursday, and high of 35F on Friday.

The forecast for Saturday is a high of 48F, so I will be riding on Saturday!

It's 9:20 am on Thursday.
I finished breakfast and then poked my head into the garage to check the charger, and it's showing solid green, which indicates a full charge on the battery.

According to Weather.com, the current temp outside is 30 F, which is the high for today. At 1 pm they're predicting 29 F, 2 pm 28 F, and then continuing to drop overnight to a low of 14 F by tomorrow morning.

Friday's high is predicted to be 36 F, and Saturday is still showing 48 F.

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday we're supposed to get rain, but the rest of next week will be clearer with temps in the 40s and 50s F.

So I'll leave it on the Battery Tender until Saturday, and then ride. :D

If it's supposedly got a full charge now, and after 12 or so hours on charge, there's no reason to suspect otherwise at this stage, so it probably does - why not just take it off the Battery Tender now & see what happens?? Surely it'd be better to find out at home, on the off chance that anything does go wrong/the battery doesn't maintain most of that charge over the next day or so, rather than finding out that it only had just a couple of starts in it & maybe an hour's running in it on Saturday, once you've ridden it away from home?! :dontknow:

Just Sayin'

A very good point, even though I did add motorcycle coverage to my AAA account in case I get stranded somewhere.

I'm meeting some friends for lunch in a little bit, so I'll unplug it before I leave.

Back from lunch and a short stop at the grocery store, so it was disconnected from the charger for about 4.5 hours.

I turned the key on and the display quickly settled on 12.6 V, and it started right up.

I turned it off and plugged it back, and the Battery Tender initially showed solid red.
I checked back about 15 minutes later and it's showing solid green, the indicator of a fully charged battery.

So I think I really did "kill" the old/original battery when I left the key turned on (which meant the lights were on) for that extended period.
And the new battery is now fully charged and ready to go.

Current temp here is 28 F, which is a bit colder than I'd like for riding.
That's the predicted high for today, with temps dropping through the day and overnight, with a predicted 14 F Friday morning and a high on Friday of 34 F.

It's supposed to be in the mid to upper 40's F on Saturday, so I'll leave it plugged into the Battery Tender Jr until Saturday, and then ride!
My helmet's bluetooth headset is also plugged in, so it will be charged up and ready to ride, too.

so should I throw my Yuasa battery tender away? been using it for my current lead acid battery and it seems to be working but reading all the hype on the newer batteries out there thinking seriously about getting one in which case this charger wont work. but until then....

There are different types of battery tenders, some work with lead acid batteries and some work with LiPo batteries, and some will work with either battery type and have an option to be configured to the battery type.

The version of the Battery Tender Jr I have is only for lead acid batteries.

Don't throw anything away, assuming it's still working. Just buy a battery that matches the type of battery tender you have.

So, I looked up that battery tender. It is made for lead-acid batteries, only. Flooded cell, AGM, and Gell. As long as you are using it on that type of of battery, then you're fine. Just don't use it on a Lithium battery. It's actually a pretty good unit. If you DO decide to get a Lithium battery, you'll need a compatible charger / maintainer for that battery type. But don't throw it away.

Comparing batteries that are relatively the same physical size that will fit, AGM batteries have their advantages - more Amp-Hour capacity. Lithium batteries have their advantages - more Cold Cranking Amps. You decide which one is best for you.

AGM is my choice as they are more resistant to Vibrations, which the Spyder def has. Can't afford the lipo batteries anyways...

Check out the battery charger on LaMonster. I bought one and it has saved me twice. No need to wait for AAA to get to you. I actually used my charger once, to jump a Harley who was waiting for AAA to arrive.

The Battery Tender Jr I have is 800ma.

The battery was ready to go when I went to pick it up, about an hour after I placed the order online. No bottles of acid were in the box. Just the battery and the hardware for the cable connections.

I just checked the Batteries Plus website, and found a couple of things that make me wonder if I need to plug it in overnight before riding:

Description: Filled and activated at the store. It's ready to use in a few hours after you charge and install your new battery in your motorcycle, ATV or personal watercraft.
Specifications: Battery Type: Store Activated

So I asked Google to find a battery charger near me, and one of the results was a Battery Tender Junior, which is what I have.

So I went to the Battery Tender Junior website to check the details on my Battery Tender Junior which has this:

So now I'm thinking I should connect it to the Battery Tender Junior overnight.
You would be money ahead to charge your new battery with a battery charger for a few hours. Failing that, or not having a charger, charge it overnight with the Tender.

The problem is not the Battery Tender it is the Haijiu battery. They are a piece of crap. I went through two of them on my 2021 F3-T, before I finally replaced it with a Yuasa. The two Haijiu were replaced under warranty. When the second one failed (well out of warranty) the dealer replaced it with a Yuasa at no charge. I have not had any luck with Chinese batteries. My 2025 F3-T is at the dealer now and I told them if the battery is Chinese, pull it out and put in a Yuasa, even if I have to pay for it.

Vancouver Washington, you are lucky to have a great dealer there with a Spyder tech that knows the Spyder from top to bottom/front to back and everything in between!!!!!

Hi, my Spyder does not sit still long enough to warrant a battery tender, nor do I have a need to charge the battery, as it is always riding weather here in OZZIE. Plus, I will ride, rain, hail, or shine.

I ride my Spyder to Pro Caliber in Vancover WA from Yakima WA. I ask for Shawn to work on it when I make the appointment. It's a good ride to enjoy on the way there and back.
