I Killed My Battery - left it on a tender... New battery awaiting collection!

I ride a 2024 Spyder RT Sea2Sky.

I have been using a Battery Tender Jr, as I don't ride every day, and sometimes don't ride at all for a week or more.
So I was out in the garage and turned the bike on to take some pictures of the dashboard to share here, and got the pictures I needed, and walked away without turning off the key.
I didn't go out into the garage until the next day, at which point I noticed the lights on the Spyder were still on. :banghead:
When I checked the display it was showing 10v.
I turned the key off and then back on and tried to start the engine. It made one quick sound from the starter motor, and then nothing. pps:

So I turned off the key and removed it, and left it plugged into the Battery Tender overnight.
I went out this morning and it started and showed 14v while it was running. I shut down the engine but left the key turned on, and in less than 30 seconds the voltage section of the screen was showing 10v. :gaah:

So I went online and found a replacement battery from the local Batteries Plus. I've dealt with them before, when I had to replace the battery on my John Deere Lawn Tractor after 5 years.
The battery I chose to buy is an Xtreme 24HL-BS AGM Powersport Battery, with 350 CCA and 21 Ah ratings.

The old/original battery is not a Yuasa battery. It's a Haijiu HTX24HL-FA and printed on the front it says: 12V 21Ah(C10) 300CCA
The Haijiu name printed on the front of the battery did cause me to smile, a little.
The dot over the first i is a plus sign, and the dot for the second i is a minus sign.

I've received the email notice that the new battery is ready to pick up, and I've already removed the old battery and stowed it securely in my other vehicle.
So I'm off to pickup the new battery.

When a battery is completely run down, I don't think a Tender will completely charge it. If you have a charger, see if it will charge it back to "normal".

I have seen batteries take way longer than overnight to charge back up. It all depends on the amps.

750ma is not much at all, only about .75 of an amp. It could take days to charge completely.

Also as noted in several threads, that battery is known to need replacing sooner rather than later.

So, that Chinese battery is already failing in the 2024 machines, as evidenced by reports on here and on Youtube. I would have thought that you could get your Chinese battery replaced under warranty, though, and paid the difference in order to get a Yuasa. But, what's done is done. As the owner of a high tech power sports product, it would be to your advantage to invest in a battery charger. You'll end up using it for a number of things besides your Spyder....like your John Deere. Please consider something like this unit here:

It will function for you as both a charger and a maintainer, for both lead-acid AGM batteries as well as Lithium batteries, should you ever go down that path. It also has the proper charging current required in order to activate the AGM battery. The one you bought looks like a Yuasa replacement / clone...and that's ok. Remember to give it an activation charge first. Simply adding the acid, whether by you or the store isn't enough. You still have to get the initial charge of energy into the battery. Always. That will take 8 - 10 hours of charging at 2 amps after the acid is added, and the charger will take care of the whole thing automatically. Be safe out there.

Xtreme 24HL-BS 12V 350CCA AGM Powersport Battery

The specs say 350 CCA and 21 Ah.

It came with a nice selection of screws and nuts, which I used to install it in my Spyder.
The biggest problem was getting the bracket that goes on top of the battery to fit correctly, as apparently the battery is a little taller or the top isn't as flat as the original battery.
I eventually got it to fit, but I think I'm going to have bruises on my knees tomorrow from kneeling down to reach into the frunk.

Once it was installed, strapped down, and the cables installed, including the Battery Tender cable, I started the bike with no problem.

After starting it showed 14.4v. When I shutdown the engine it quickly settled down to 12.2v and after a minute dropped to 12.1v and stayed there. Better than the 10v of the old battery.

I almost forgot to replace the cover over the battery area, but remembered when I saw it sitting on the work area.

Everything is buttoned back up, and the frunk liner is zipped into place.

Weather.com says it's going to be mid-30s F tomorrow with no rain, and Wednesday will again be no rain, with mid to high-40s F in the afternoon.
So I think I'm going to gear up and ride tomorrow. And Wednesday. And probably Thursday and Friday, as they're supposed to be rain free!

I know you have already purchased and installed a new battery. All I have to say is that 'old' battery may still had a life.
I experienced this problem. Fortunately I had a great battery charger and it was able to recharge the battery to complete 'health'. Sometimes people are not understanding how to do a proper battery charge.

Looks like you have a Better Battery by the way.

Just a thought if I were in the market for a new Spyder, which I am not, I would insist that as part of the OTD deal the dealership replace the Chinese rip off they call a battery with an American one. That thing they are calling a battery in the new MYs is an insult to intelligence of someone with the IQ of meat.

Did the battery tender indicate that it had finished the charge? Green LED, right?

I agree with the other comments, that an actual battery charger might have been able to revive the old battery.
For me, the decision came down to pay for a charger that might fix the problem I caused, or pay for a new battery and in the future make sure I don't kill it.

Yes, the Battery Tender was showing a solid green light.


For those who aren't familiar with the Battery Tender Jr it has a light on the part that plugs into the wall.
The light indicates what is happening.

Red Light Flashing - plugged into the wall but is either not correctly connected to a battery or the battery charge is so low that it can't charge the battery.

Red Light Steady - correctly connected and the battery is charging.

Green Light Flashing - battery charge is greater than 80%.

Green Light Steady - battery is fully charged.

You are correct that the batteries are covered under warranty. But only for 6 months.

Funny that you should post this. I just replaced the original battery in my 2021 RTL with the same battery from Batteries Plus. I also left my switch on after going in the frunk for registration information to participate in a local parade on 12/14. I also tried the battery tender for 24 hours and it was not enough. I removed the battery and tried charging it with a battery charger. Still did not work. When I went to pick up the battery I asked for a discount (they normally do 10% easily). The guy told me the only ones they had were online. So I stood there and ordered it online with my phone for pickup. Gave me an additional $20 off. Made it worth my while. And yes, the top bracket was a little tricky to put on.
BTW, was your 2024 wired for a battery tender already? Mine was, as well as 2 friends that have 2020. But a buddy just bought a 2024 and told me his was not.

It did not come pre-wired for the Battery Tender.
I added the connector for the Battery Tender, and poked a hole in one of the round rubber plugs above the battery, and ran the cable through that.
The connector is long enough that with the frunk carpeted insert installed, I can still get to the cable end by just opening the frunk lid.

That's an understatement... I still haven't got mine back on after several tries. I also found out cursing and drinking adult beverages does help with the frustration. :gaah:

Use a light and a mirror to see in there. You just have to reverse your moves with a mirror.

A good idea, although I think I would try it with the battery removed first; and then use a mirror and light to see how the bracket fits.

yes, you can phantom install holding bracket, then tape it up!! more room to see. I got in place with battery in place

Hmm. I use a 3 and 4 amp Battery tender in my garage. They get swapped from my Spyders to my 2002 Miata and then outside to my 2017 Ram 3500 dual battery Cummins diesel. No issues whatsoever...
If those batteries are dry and you get the acid with them, then be sure to add the acid, then charge the batteries up overnight before installing. That first charge is critical to a long, trouble-free life.

The Battery Tender Jr I have is 800ma.

If those batteries are dry and you get the acid with them, then be sure to add the acid, then charge the batteries up overnight before installing. That first charge is critical to a long, trouble-free life.

The battery was ready to go when I went to pick it up, about an hour after I placed the order online. No bottles of acid were in the box. Just the battery and the hardware for the cable connections.

I just checked the Batteries Plus website, and found a couple of things that make me wonder if I need to plug it in overnight before riding:

Description: Filled and activated at the store. It's ready to use in a few hours after you charge and install your new battery in your motorcycle, ATV or personal watercraft.
Specifications: Battery Type: Store Activated

So I asked Google to find a battery charger near me, and one of the results was a Battery Tender Junior, which is what I have.

So I went to the Battery Tender Junior website to check the details on my Battery Tender Junior which has this:

STAY CHARGED: Provides a full charge to your machine’s battery before switching to float mode to maintain proper voltage levels for safe, long term storage without overcharging

So now I'm thinking I should connect it to the Battery Tender Junior overnight.
