After taking my bike out last week when it was hot, and while using the highway pegs in shorts (don't judge), I realized I needed to do something about the heat coming from that vent. Like I expected, SpyderPops had invented a solution. I ordered his upper exhaust blocker, and it arrive quickly.
However, when dry fitting it, I realized it was going to be a bit wonky on my 2019, so I wrote the shop with some questions and pics. Corey called me very quickly, we did a quick facetime to show him my challenges, and he advised leaving the honeycomb grill entirely off, thus leaving the lower port completely open. I didn't like that idea because I like the look of the honeycomb and want the bike to look OEM (mostly), and definitely did not want the hot air dumping over the floorboard and heating me up when not on the highway pegs. He said I could drill out the floorpan instead, and he'd send me some instructions on that.
So, I cut the shield they sent to fit into the back of the honeycomb, drilled a few strategic holes, and just zip-tied it to the honeycomb. I installed the rubber block they provide "backwards" to block more of the heat than in the original position, and then drilled out a few holes in the floorboard. I rode it all weekend with no codes being thrown, no increase in the temp gauge, or dashboard (intake) thermometer. I do think the fan kicks on when idling at stop signs a bit more than it did, but that's the only thing I've noticed. To be fair, this weekend was cooler, so I'll update here if I do encounter any issues once it reaches high 90's outside again.
Pics:
The area in question, with honeycomb grill removed.
The grill, unmodified.
The new holes in the floor pan.
The grill with heat shield and rubber mount installed from the top.
Installed grill from front. I think the zip ties are barely noticeable.
