I have a rattle when I start my 2013 ST off slow. Is this normal?

I just purchased a 2013 ST Limited. I notice a rattle when I go to take off slow. Sounds like it is coming from clutch. Is this a normal sound for this bike? 998cc V-twin motor
New to the club and new to a Spyder. I have been riding for 50 years, the last 25 on BMWs. I've never heard a sound like this.
Any suggestions?

It IS normal if the sound and feeling goes away after the oil warms up in a few minutes. It’s NOT normal if it’s constant no matter the time or temp. The 998 V-Twin has a centrifugal clutch and if RPM is not maintained high enough, the clutch can be damaged over time. Actually, after 13 years, the PO could have wounded it in a number of ways, wrong RPM history, wrong oil, etc, etc. Hopefully, it's the normal cold oil clutch chatter. Welcome Aboard.

This information is for both the 900 and 1330 series engines and will be indicated when something applies specifically to one or the other.

There are several "things" a Spyder owner needs to know when buying and operating their Spyder to help them have a better experience, and to avoid causing complications later.

I have the same year and sometimes if you just start and take off you can get a little chatter. I always let the oil get warmed up before I take off.

Welcome to the group.

The only thing that I can say is make sure you have the bike go through a complete check over. I know it will cost you for the service but then you know where you stand on when you can expect service to be done and confident that your bike is running properly and should not give you any trouble when riding. Expect to change spark plugs every 20,000 miles, oil change every year as a minimum (depending on miles you travel), Check your oil regularly as the 900 tends to burn a little oil (which is standard), keep your battery charged up as all spyders run like crap or not at all with a low charged battery, check tire pressure regularly, do not under inflate or over inflate.

Do regular service and you will love the ride.

Those 998 runs well on higher RPM, don't short shift them! They are a great motor!! Welcome to the group!
