I believe the RT stereo is junk, all feedback wanted.

Just as the title states. I've spent a lot of time in my life with stereos so I'm pretty sure I know a thing or two. I don't want to hear anyone blabber about how, "why waste time and money on a bike stereo and look for audiophile sound." The fact is, after reading below, and getting some feedback, I believe either my stereo is defective or possibly all of these are.
I am also a laser technician, so I do have technical ability.

So, I bought a stereo for my 2010 Rt, and installed the speakers in front. Seemed just to lack volume, but also had a lot of distortion, static more or less. I later decided to buy rear speakers and went with a set of focals, and not the lower model. I played with the stereo, and it just sounded aweful, still static/distortion at higher volume. I thought it was the bad signal for the radio, but tried a high end Hifiman portable player, and still stunk. Only thing I thought was that it was just the crappy speakers up front and lack of power all the way around. I then bought an amp and a signal filter, and it played louder, but now distortion/static at a lower volume setting. I then purchased the best, an lc8i by audio control, this device converts and filters any factory stereo wires to rca, and cleans up the signal. I also ran grounds for the amp and scraped the frame clean for a good ground for the amp. I put a set of 6.5 focal 100 watt rms utopia mids and tweeters. After it's all said and done, the speakers are far cleaner sounding, but again, at higher volume, terrible distortion, static. I've set the gain on the amp to zero and the lc8i has lights that allow you to balance the power to the amp and speakers to avoid amp clipping and problem. I've tried everything and no matter what, the same poor sound quality. I pulled the 6.5 focals out of my truck, as I bought a new set, and they played very loud and clean, way louder than what I'm getting on the bike. When I tested the set up originally no wires were run near the power wires. Also, even with no engine running or anything, it's no better, so it's not engine noise or electrical.

Can those who have an RT check their bikes and see if they get distortion only at higher volume and if it just gets worse the louder you go? As in, listen at low volume and turn up slowly and see if you hear poor sound quality/distortion, and see if you notice it get progressively worse as you go up.

I truly believe either my stereo is junk, or there are far more people with bad stereos out there who think the speakers are at their limit, when the distortion is caused by the head unit.

The lc8i has an rca imput for running an ipod or whatever right through it. I'm going to see if by running my stereo that way, if I get the same noise, because it will actually bypass the RT head unit. I'll check to make sure I have 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA to test this. If that doesn't work, I'll bypass everything, including the bikes display and controls and run another regular head unit.

In the meantime, what do you guys find with your RT stereo? I read others who have this, believing it's the amp they installed, but I'll bet they had it with the stock system and thought it was the speakers.

what I find strange is that most stereos allow you to play them to 80% volume most of the time and not distort, this stereo barely allows you past 50 or 60% and I just hear crap.

Anyone have any input.

stereo on14 RT

The radio on our 14 RT is not anywhere close to the one we had on our 2012 Victory Cross Country. That System could pick up signals that would stay for many miles. was much easier to use than the Spyder. We just completed a 3 week trip and after about the second day,we just turned it off.Got tired of constantly searching for a station and having to turn it up so loud to hear it. On the Victory we could both hear it and talk with out an intercom. The Spyder is quiet enough that we could talk with no problem but the radio is less than what we expected.

It is what it is. Mine works the way it should. If it wasn't I'd replace it without worry, as long as one can afford what they want.

As an past audiophile, I see your point. BUT... Other than not having enough jacks for aux components (pretty much stuck with an iWhatever or use the small 3.5mm jack), I think the system is fine. If you want a high end sound with excellent resonance and bass, drive a car with the windows rolled up or listen to audio at home.

2014 RTL STEREO OUTPUT

On mine the higher I adjust volume the more "static" it seems to have. I have a hard wired intercom for my 2 helmets(BRP Headsets). I noticed that on the 14 that it has an adjustment for AUDIO HEADSET FRONT which seems to have a PLUS/MINUS end of a numbered setting(exp.-50 or +50). If you adjust the regular volume of the stereo to MAX, then go to the audio screen and play with the setting the volume will get louder(plus) or quieter(minus) but I still get distortion. Don't know if I am using this function correctly or not. Nothing in owners manual about this and the tech I use at the shop has that"deer in the headlights"look. Sounds like you just use the stereo with just the speakers turned on and don't know if the older RT's use the same stereo or the 14's have a completly re-designed unit. Hope this helps and if I could get some feedback from you folks that have 14's If I'm using this function properly.Thanks.:dontknow:

:agree:, and i usually don't agree with anyone. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

:agree: You usually don't agree with anyone! :roflblack:

For an audiophile; you should know that adding more power usually will make an "iffy" system; worse!
Upgrade your speakers, add your amp, and some more shielding... and you'll be surprised.
For the Record; my 2010 and 2014 systems are rarely cooking at anything less than full volume... the 2014 is a MAJOR improvement! :2thumbs:

No issue with my 2010 RT. My friend has no issue with his 2014 stero either. My friend had an amp rack and two amps installed with new aftermarket front and rear speakers it sounds awesome. He is using the stock stereo on his 2014 RT

In my opinion, if you want LOUD, you should be using headsets. Many people are annoyed by other people's insistence that everyone MUST listen to their radio. Common courtesy should be the order.

:agree: 100% I am tired of mind numbing thumping noise pollution that would have gotten me a ticket in my youth. Time for the LEOs to man up.

The stereo operation of the 2010 compared to my 2014, I feel like there is an improvement in the sound. I can actually hear the words to the songs when going down the highway at 65 or + mph. An improvement over my 2010.

When I am where the public is, I usually kill the radio. One of my pet peeves is to hear or worse yet, being able to feel the bass notes from a vehicle a block away or so.

I like a little country music (old style) once in a while, and usually play the local station. Have never chased other stations when on the road. Kind of reminds me of the scene in the movie "Kelly's Heros" when the tank pulls into the town playing some Hank Williams--Well, the Spyder is almost as big. :roflblack:

Perhaps, a CD player would be a nice option. I am not brave enough to play with MP players. I still have the one that I got with the 2010 RTS package, and have never used it.

Nothin' but sweet music

I've got a 2011 RT and haven't had any issues with distortion or static. At first I didn't think it could get loud enough to hear on the highway, but I run the windshield up all the way and crank up the volume. I've never needed to exceed 3/4 volume, even at 80+mph. However, i do turn it down when I get into traffic or residential areas. I don't think everyone would appreciate my taste in music.

I have been an Audiophile for 25 years and many years ago I decided not to pursue trying to get all my audio systems to sound like my home system. It is futile as the home environment closer to ideal than any other environment you may be trying to tame. I took all the investment in all those other stereo systems and invested in making the home system better. On all the other systems, I just try not to be critical and just enjoy the music as is. BTW I have a 2014 RTL and have no issue with its sound system.

I looked at adding the audio system to my 2013 STS, but at £1,000 ($1,700) the only reason I can see is to be able to use the fancy buttons on my left handle bar for more than just pressing mode before I set off! I would quite like to add the Sat Nav, and probably will, but, for now, I'm using my iPhone for music sat nav and good old fashioned calls via a Sena SM10 Bluetooth headset. The only drawbacks so far are that my phone runs out of juice in no time and the screen isn't glove friendly. The power issue I've sorted with a double USB socket and most of the things I need can get operated remotely from the headset. I have some of those pens that can operate the iPhone and will probably work out something with them till I get a proper satnav to link everything together.

Anyway the point of all this drivel? Poor sound pumping out to all and sundry of half decent sound within the privacy of my own helmet? An easy choice for me! Still no where near my hone Linn system, but I've always found levelling the LP12 on the bike a bit tricky LOL

Mine works fine with pandora on the phone , I put the phone volume to the highest and the radio to mid volume sounds good

No issues here. Only thing I notice is the FM reception is not that great when you get out in the boonies.
