• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I am tearing into it for the first time today

Last year my 2014 ST Limited was due for the valve check routine. I looked at a number of posts on this forum and others and decided the procedure wasn't required. In sending my e-mail to the dealership for what I DID want done I purposely noted in BOLD HIGHLIGHT that the valve check would not be done, due to the "feedback" on various forums. I also indicated that if they had an issue with not having that work done, they were to reply. They did not and that e-mail is now on file with my other Spyder papers.

Theres a reason the 1330 never needs it...... they are hydraulic and don't require adjustments. Don't let the stealer tell you they do.

BRP put out an update for the 1330. No valve adjust needed! Can't find muy list of others but trans filter was one item not needed every change. Dealer here says visual inspections are about all they do. Almost never seen a problem after 14K.

Way to go.....

Shop manual in hand and you will be fine. Take your time, as mentioned, and walk away from time to time... you'll do well....

:agree: I don't go to the Stealers for anything either ...... Make sure you keep good records, you are covered by the Moss - Magnussen Act ( a law ) that prevents Manufactures from denying Warranties just because you do your own work !!!!!! ....... good luck, it's not rocket science ........ Mike

Mike,

I have a dumb question. I read the Wikipedia version of the act and did not see where it mentions a person cannot void a warranty if they do their own maintenance. Assuming you are correct, you know more about this than I do, my question pertains to a comment in the California page where USSOLDIER stated that dealers in California are refusing to do maintenance or warranty work if a Spyder has after market parts installed. Wouldn't those policies be a violation of the act?

I like Wikipedia,( I'm sure it's a very condensed version ) but understand they can't answer questions involving the unknown !!!! ..... If an owner changes the Brake fluid or Anti-freeze etc. and uses a product that doesn't even come close to OEM SPECS well this won't meet Warranty requirements and the M-M act won't protect them................ It would be tantamount to using Diesel instead of Gasoline and making a warranty claim for engine failure - not going to fly ............. As far as Calif. is concerned ..... I won't even comment about what they do out there :banghead::banghead::banghead: ....... Mike

That rate was from Flatout Motorsports Indianapolis, Indiana. I told them they were smoking wacky tobaccy!:lecturef_smilie:
..
I live less than 30 miles from the Flatout Martinsville location and I am not going to use them either due to their excessive labor rate. I have checked all over the state and Maximum in Peru was the cheapest and has good reviews. The 3k service at Maximum is $200 and $316 at Flatout. I am going to check with Dreyer in a few weeks on their rates since they are a new Spyder dealer in Indy now.

Good luck with your service at home ... which I want to do after my first service at the dealer. My BF is willing to tackle it as opposed to getting robbed at the dealer.

My dealer doesnt do the valve checks. They said they never have had to adjust them so they stopped doing it. They also took $100 dollars off the service price. Only $200 for the first oil change and service. I had them do the first service so they could put the Gold Plugs in. The rest I am doing myself.

$100 off? They are ripping you off!

$200 for a first oil change is fine but trust me, the 14K service if they do it right IS IN FACT close to $600-900 based on labor.
$100 off... If they tell you that and charge you $600 for the 14K service... RIP OFF!

I have done it myself and trust I can see why the 998 is expensive to do the 14K as stated by BRP. It's a TON of labor.
Oh and also don't think BECAUSE MOST have not needed a valve adjustment that it is not worth checking!
I in fact have known some that in fact needed a valve adjustment at 14K and more so later at 28 and so on...
TRUST ME... If you suck a valve and blow the engine... YOU WILL be buying a new Spyder....

Thanks for all the great advice. I have the Tupperware off. It's amazing how much stuff they stuff under that plastic. So far so good. Air box removal is next.
:nopic: If not too late I hope. I'm hoping to get better look at the fuel tank & access if any to the sending unit/gauge (mine has been lil off lately) I'm sure there is some difference between ours but worth a look if you dont mind.

Bob, The $200 was for the first oil change and 3K check on Cocaine. The fact that they were not going to charge for a valve check that they probably wouldnt have done anyway, is a good thing. I have seen many members here say in the past that they got charged for the valve check but doubted they had been done. Also, as I said in my previous post, I will be doing future service on my own. Your comment after the TRUST ME... Way too many jokes, too little time. :roflblack:

You have a Good Point there, after all,... the real smart ones left California decades ago

You will know they did it if you ask for the old parts back. They have to replace gaskets, bold seals, etc when they do it.

The valve check service is supposed to be a part of the 14,000 mile check up. Most do not do it. I did one at 14,000 on my 2008 and one at 28,000 on my 2010. Neither required adjustment. I am not going to do any until at least 50,000 on my 2011--if I still have it then.

The valves add about $800 to the bill. I am guessing that a lot of dealers charge for it and do not even turn a wrench. Caveat Emptor.
