Hurricane Harvey

not a new idea:

http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2012-10/how-stop-hurricane-shoot-it-full-dry-ice

it won't work because the hurricane is powered by ocean water above 80 F. Throwing some dry ice into the clouds doesn't stop the engine that is driving the storm.

So cool the ocean water. I know-- I know--- it's a huge amount of water but with some outside the box thinking and maybe computer modeling....... The idea from 1956 didn't have modern science and space technology behind it. There has got to be a way to stop or at least mitigate the devastation caused by these storms.
IMAGINE: Cyclones and hurricanes with a third or even half of their energy and all the devastation/ misery they cause----- The folks in the southern US sure wish something had been done in this vein after Katrina and other major canes.

Rain is what to watch. The winds will be gone in hours, the rain could last a couple days.
Imagine 15-20 inches in 24-36 hours. No way to keep up.
The storm surge maps do not take rainfall into account, only water pushed by the storm.
Add 15 inches of rain to the surge and you've got massive flooding.
Hope no lives are lost.
Looks like the Texas people take it seriously. Too many here in FL don't believe it can happen to them.

Update: Now a Category 3 and expected to hit land this evening. This could be a big one that will affect us all in the US. Since the area has a lot of major refineries--you can expect gas prices to go up--how much--depending on the greed of the companies. Ours jumped a nickel a gallon this AM. And...we have our own refinery here. :dontknow:

And now the scenario of hit--re-strengthen--hit again, is looming. I do hope they are wrong about that one. If the scenario about 36 inches of rain is on--that is going to float most of the state.

Thoughts and   for those caught in the eye of the tiger.

Where are you going to get the energy needed to cool the oceans? Global warming is upon us I'm afraid.

I was over in New Orleans in the early nineties when Andrew came through. That was more than close enough for me.....frightening bloody things. The only plus was that the Hilton said we might have to spend the night in the bar, rather than our rooms, if it got really bad, and they hoped it wouldn't inconvenience us. Being Aussie, we didn't want to take any chances so we immediately headed to the bar for the night ;):ohyea:

Oil rigs in the gulf, ships, and their crews were all shut down and evacuated days ago. They take this stuff seriously in the oil business ... I have friends and colleagues that spend weeks on oil rigs in the gulf and they know the impact of a hurricane on a floating ocean rig (it can be devastating).

I would not expect too much impact to the northern two thirds of Texas ... especially if Harvey tracks eastward instead of moving inland. I could be wrong ... but we shall see (I am about 20 miles for the TX OK border).

:pray: to those in the danger zone (FAR outside the actual path) ..... Ann

Hi Peteoz,

Re: we immediately headed to the bar for the night

Sounds like what I did on the evening of 9/11.

I was on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Los Angeles. We were diverted to Tijuana, Mexico. Then we got bussed up to LA airport. The airlines picked up the tab for the rooms and our food at the Marriott Hotel near the airport. So we headed to the bar & just charged 'things' to our room.

Humans can and do think outside of the box.

For all you meteorologists out there------

HOw many tons of dry ice spread over Harvey to change this up coming devastation?? 20 or 30 tons ----- heck 1000 tons of dry ice could cost less that the pain and devastation this storm will cause. Ya --- I know ---- it's fooling around with Mother Nature. But we have delivery systems already. Ice crushers in the bomb bays of our military planes would just be a start.

A couple years ago, one of the smart bazillionaires, I forget just who- Elon Musk?- applied for a patent where you would have large underwater pumps out at sea that would pump the cooler water down low near the sea bed straight up toward the surface. The theory being that since hurricanes need warm water, just a few degrees of cooling could lower the category of the storm quite a bit.

Now a Category 4

Oh Lord help those on the Texas / Louisiana coast ... Harvey has just been upgraded.

The energy for Elon Musks' patent ( if it exists) could come from the Gulf stream. Turbines to run the pumps.

Thinking outside the box -----Elon Musk. Shading the ocean in front of a storm or cooling the clouds a degree or 2 has got to effect some change. From a 3 to a 1 might make a big difference. Sure these ( or other out of the box ideas) are expensive but they must be much cheaper than fixing the aftermath of a cat 3 hurricane.

I feel for all these folks in the path of hurricanes---- there has got to be a way. Any other ideas?????

A request: :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

The hurricane has just been upgraded to a Category 4.

This could indeed be another big one.

Could we keep the thread on or about the subject matter, and "perhaps" do the conspiracy theory/speculation stuff in another thread?

Peoples lives and lively hoods could be at stake here. Thanks in advance.:bowdown::bowdown:

FlamingoBabe and HotGlue are having their grandson's wedding at their house on Saturday. Outdoor wedding. :yikes: But if anybody can pull off an outdoor wedding during a hurricane it would be those two.

I'll leave the details for Flamingo Babe, but she posted on Facebook that the wedding was yesterday under a big tree during a break in the rain. Now the happy couple is on their honeymoon . . . in Galveston!! :yikes:

I think there's a country-western song in there somewhere. ;)
